Just watched Bill Paxton's last film, The Circle, which is on Netflix (not that he has a big role). Can't say that I was impressed with it though - it felt like a fluffier and shinier Black Mirror episode with an ending

that didn't really make sense. If the two company bosses were evil and she'd uncovered lots of sinister stuff, then maybe,
but there was no detail given, just some secret email accounts. So she makes a point about privacy.. but is then filmed by drones while kayaks in the last scene? So it's ok to be watched if you know who's doing the watching?

Minions are great, and the Minions film was brilliant, and they are, and always have been, the best bit of Despicable Me films. So ner.

I'm 99% certain I've seen Dispicable Me (the baddie looks like Joans, right?) but I do not remember the minions being part of it. I know of them because I seem to have spent four years blocking 'Minions Quotes' pages on FB, but I can't think of them in the same film.

As said above, in the first film they are used as filler and comic relief. They could pretty much be removed or replaced with a couple of generic henchmen and the film wouldn't suffer for it. It was only after the film became popular that the Minions Juggernaut got rolling

Just in case it's useful for anyone else, I stumbled on JustWatch.com the other day, when looking for a site to get updates on new Netflix/Amazon content. The site I used previously was ok, but seemed to be missing stuff, but by applying the filters on the site and bookmarking the page, this link shows new additions to Netflix and Amazon in one go. And if you use any of the other services, just add/remove as need be.

<insert oversized minions pic here>

NO REASON AT ALL THAT I CAN FATHOM IT'S FUCKING STUPID.

I might just go rogue and start new threads for films from now on, it's so crap because if you watch a film at LITERALLY ANY OTHER TIME than the initial gaggle of folks that watch the film, you're dredging up a post or posts from ages ago to make a disconnected point about a film that no one else is then talking about, and this can repeat multiple times for the same film with multiple people across many months, years, decades, centuries, even - so any sense of a coherent conversation about a single topic is utterly wrecked.

The 'all purpose' US/UK TV threads are similarly afflicted.

It's not like we're paying by the thread, or something.

See how ANGRY this minion is about it all.

I use the search function, and then what happens is exactly what I just outlined above (and I'm not talking solely about myself here, but everyone who this happens to), you get a single post (quoting a post that you just searched for) in the middle of nowhere about a film/series that was last mentioned months or even years ago, which a couple of people might then chime in about, and it looks like a conversation will start about it, but then someone else posts about ZOMG NEW FILM I JUST WATCHED and it all gets blown to smithereens and it's awful and it makes no sense and it's stupid.

It also makes it really hard to follow trains of thought about the particular film or series.

Whereas for example The Walking Dead's thread is splendid, because it's got a thread all to itself which follows the chronology of the seasons and what people think about it and all that stuff really well, and anyone watching TWD for the first time has a single reference thread they can go through to see what everyone else made of it.

On the flip side you have a film like 'DRIVE' which generated quite a lot of polarised opinions which are interesting to read, but they're cast across god knows how many random pages of this thread, so people end up repeating themselves and speaking at cross purposes and all sorts.

It's a shit system, in years gone by women would have chained themselves to the Houses of Parliament in protest.

There's a massive innate difference between films and TV though. People watch a film once in one sitting, and often round about the time it's actually released, and that's that. Long running TV series are naturally going to generate lengthy and ongoing discussion that will last literally years. I mean I don't care in the slightest if you want to start threads about individual films, but you've cherry picked the hell out of your examples here and it makes a nonsense of your point. The truth is that for the vast, vast majority films you'll only ever get a handful of posts about it and that'll be that. That's not an argument in the slightest against them getting a thread of their own, but it's not a massive inconvenience for those few posts to be in the middle of a larger thread either. Also, if a film does begin to generate more substantial chat you can always request that one of the friendly neighbourhood mods splits those posts out.

Some people just don't like starting new threads*... General purpose threads work well for them. Never seen anyone complain about a new thread that could theoretically go in a general thread.

*-Perhaps owing to the INTENSE SHAME that comes from owning a thread with no replies.
