Guys!

I have agreed to cook a ham for Russell for Christmas. Unfortunately I do not even really know what one is. Good start.

I am hampered mostly by my inability to find anything that is not yet cooked that is called a 'ham' in the supermarkets. So, I asked my mother what a ham was in difference to (a) gammon (is it 'a' gammon or just gammon?) and she said 'gammon, when cooked, is ham.' But now I am confused as you can buy gammon that is cooked (Russell had it at a pub today), so if gammon is turned into ham when you cook it, what is the gammon he ate today?

I have searched on the internet for recipes, but they all seem to assume you are born with this knowledge as the human equivalent of knowing you must fly south for the winter.

Anyway, as I am here, does anyone have any tips for cooking it, if I can work out what one is? Can I cook it in the slow cooker, or will that make it fall apart? It would only be a little one as it's just for Russell.

What Is a Ham?

At its most basic, a ham is the rear leg of an animal (yes, you've got hams too, and nice ones, at that!), though colloquially, it's used specifically to refer to the cured hind leg of a pig starting at the shank (that's your ankle), and ending at the rump (that's your, well, you can figure that out).

Take a look at the serious eats guide Mimi, might help ;)

It's almost like pigs are actually quite big animals or something.

They're the same thing, except gammon is cured along with a side of bacon, and ham is cured after its been cut of the pig.

My Mum buys a bacon joint, not sure where this fits in the Gammon\Ham category but its really nice

After its cooked she cuts the small fatty bit off the joint so you are left with just round slices.

Not really a huge fan of Gammon\Ham, but I love this

Oh, not the size (it's 1" across on my phone, and with nothing to scale) I mean the shape and bone thing. I'm not squeamish about folks eating meat, but bones are weird things, aren't they?

Anyway, I shall have a proper read tonight, but it's a good first step to know that gammon is ham-ish and can be the same thing as otherwise there would seem to be no ham at the shops!

A cooked gammon is a ham. And a bacon joint is gammon that's cut from the loin.

You should cut a design in it so you can have a game of Backgammon. Using pigs in blankets as the counters.
