Would you facebook/linkedin/twitter-stalk the person you’re about to date?
Yes, of course I would. That’s completely normal. In fact you’d be crazy not to. How else would you know if they were a cat lover and therefore to be avoided? 75%  75%  [ 18 ]
No, of course not! That’s mental stalkeryness. Also, I sometimes eat soap. 25%  25%  [ 6 ]

So. A gentleman of my acquaintance is about to date a new lady this weekend that he met during work. When asked if he had checked her out on Facebook, the response was that he didn’t know if she was on Facebook and hadn’t looked. I pointed out that any normal person would have snuck a look at her security pass or otherwise managed to find out her surname and then Facebook stalked her. He disagrees with my definition of normal.

Obviously, in order to settle this we need SCIENCE. Hence the poll.

So, would you pre-vet your date thanks to the miracle of the Internets?

I'm such a sad loner that if it wasn't for the Internet, I wouldn't have a date.

So, chances are I know all there is to know about her anyway.

So if you have been stalking her why don't you let Kissys mate know what he is in for?

I would do it but I would never say that I had done it. I don't think it's particularly normal, but I don't think facebook is particularly normal, and it seems most people (myself included) are happy to use it.

Standard application form, inc credit checks and a administration fee of £30. many are willing but few are chosen.

Or, I'll just say "hello, I'm MaliA, mighty space pirate. I'm leaving town in 12 hours and you'd like to spend at least eight of those hours with me. Let's go to your place, now, and pick up some wine on the way."

Facebook is for subhumans, if she has an account stay well clear.

Much better to find out what her Halo4 rank is and if she prefers the fun factor of 2wd over 4x4 RC buggies.

No.

It's up to her to make whatever impression she wants. If it's not an accurate one, It'll be clear soon enough, but probably still better than Facebook.

Increasingly normal I'd say. At the very least you can work out how stupid she is by seeing how much of her profile is wide open to the internet. I don't think I could reasonably date someone that didn't have a clue about their security settings.

I never trust posts about 'A Friend'.

You should tell her you're married, Chris. Think of the children. Walk away.

Heh.

You're right to be suspicious, but for the wrong reasons. Unlike the person who invented the word munter, it's not me. But the person concerned wishes to remain anoynmous. :ninja:

That reminds me, and I may be treading on dangerous ground here.. but didn't one of our members ask advice about having an affair on here?

I can't remember who it was but I vaguely remember their wife being ill? Possibly? I wonder what happened there?

Any hint as to either who that was or how it panned out?

I don't remember the original thread but reading that I thought it could be the long-departed Dr. A. I know his missus was variously ill and they had a bit of a break-up/make-up spell, but then I supposed that that bit about working in an office didn't mesh because as far as I know he's been self-employed for years.

If you have seen her in the flesh (which I assume you have) and you like her, then not sure what else you need for a first date.

That said its almost the normal for people to check you out online.

I'd say the woman should request you as a friend, but only cause I'm a bit old fashioned. It's like opening doors for women, init?

If she wants to add you then you can probably assume that the date went well.

If she doesn't, then "Congratulations"! You've become the subject of ridicule on her page. It already has 112 Likes.

I find it easier to not spend a lot of time fretting what you should or shouldn't do, and in fact just talk to the girl about it. If you've had a couple of dates and have at least snogged her, having a chat about whether to add her on facebook shouldn't be difficult.
