Does anyone have any info on who was looking after inverty.com? I can't connect to the site. Not sure if the domain or hosting has expired?

The Doc is keeping it online. It was renewed a few months ago, so it's probably just a temporary technical glitch.

So what's happening to it overall? Is it being kept as is? It's a pretty awesome site but it seems a shame to leave it languishing. Any ideas on killing "up to jump" and merging contents with inverty... obviously I understand the reasons for leaving it too but the Rev Built it up and it is such a good site.

Well, yes. As far as I know, it still belongs to Patience.

It would seem wrong to add to it, as it's kind of a memorium to him. It was his own personal website.

So the domain has not expired (and that would tie in with Grim...'s comments about it being "recently" renewed)

I renewed the domain and the hosting agreement in November, and I have confirmation from the hosting firm (UKHost4U) that it was paid up for another year. I have no further emails from them warning me about anything being wrong. I've emailed them to ask what is going on.

My email to them:
Quote:
In late 2010, my friend Owen sadly passed away. I took over the hosting contract for his blog, inverty.com, which I wanted to keep active in his memory. You transferred the account to me.

In November 2011, I paid a domain renewal and hosting renewal with yourselves to keep the account active.

The site dropped off the web sometime in early January. When I log in to the control panel at billing.ukhost4u.com, I see the account listed as "cancelled". I have received no communication from you as to why this has happened. Could you please explain the current state of the account?

Their response:

Quote:
According to our records this account was suspended on the 21st of December for some reason. I'm sure it wasn't billing related but unfortunately the account has since been terminated so the reason for the suspension is unclear. I will ask my colleagues to see if I can find out what was going on here and more importantly, get a backup of your account restored.

I've double checked my inbox and I had no email from them at all during this process.

Even worse: I have an awful feeling my backup of the site, which I took not long after Owen passed, was on a hard drive that failed. I'll know for sure when I get home. If so, UKHost4U had the only copy. I've replied to their email with shaking hands and I will keep you all informed. I feel sick.

Me:

Why wasn't I contacted about the suspension or termination? Shouldn't I have had an email? I've checked my spam folder, and there's nothing in there either (this is a gmail account so spam is held for 30 days, which takes us back to before the 21st of December). I also have Paypal receipts for both the invoices (domain and hosting), so I know the account was paid up.

More importantly: my own backup of this site was lost in a HDD failure recently. You were holding the only copy of the data. I cannot stress to you how important it is to me and Owen's family that you have not deleted the last surviving copy.

I looked earlier and it was reporting problems. It does appear to have at least a partial capture of the site:

http://web.archive.org/web/201102020644 ... verty.com/

I could scrape this and partly reconstruct the site from it, as static HTML at least.

No, I binned it in a clear out.

This is my fucking fault for forgetting that backup was on that drive. And for not having it in a folder set to be duped across drives. God damn it.

These things happen, Rich. Don't bang yourself up too hard over it. Fingers crossed they have a backup somewhere.

I was trying to post something like that, but Myps has said it better.

At least there's the Web.archive thingy at least for now.

Oh thank God. UKHost4U deleted the site because of a proxedural cock-up but they have located, and are restoring, a backup.

Do you know how big the site is ?

I'm just thinking having something crawl the site and hold it on a dropbox or similar location would be very easy for others to do as long as its small enough - its therefore introduces some redundancy 'just in case'

The site's back up but I can't take a fresh backup, cPanel (which is the cuss) fails each time. There's no shell access on the account. I suspect it's because its over disk quota (about 1 GB used of 500 MB). I've emailed UKHost4U to ask if they can help sort it out. I can delete things through the cPanel UI, but (obviously) I'm leery of doing that without a backup in place.

I also don't have a login for Owen's Wordpress account. I suppose I can pull that from the database with some legwork.

Easier to just replace it with your own.

OK, so, I have a backup tarball -- about 750 MB. It has the public_html directory that has inverty.com in (as well as some microsites and other static content like some photos that were semi-privately shared, it seems), as well as things like Owen's mail archive.

I'm not really comfortable distributing the mail archive, so I think I'll make a smaller tarball with the web stuff in and put it up for a few folk here to download. Sounds reasonable?

Also, I'm going to (finally) get a running mirror on my own server going, I think, as the first stage towards turning off the ukhost4u instance. It'll be more stable (and cheaper) if it's not running on a hosting environment that's dedicated to it, as I'll be able to keep a closer eye on it.

At home I just downloaded one of those free website scraping programs and ran it over inverty.com

Total size was around 750mb but i've not actually looked to see whats on there (so if there were things which should not be shared please let me know because i assume it spidered the whole site).

My intention was to open up a dropbox account and dump the file on there with the account details 'obscured' but on here (so something like password = Owens sirname)

That would mean that anyone who actually wanted it could grab the files and as long as dropbox is around there would be a copy freely available
