Right! Fed up of talking about this, let's do it.

For anyone that hasn't heard of Song Wars, it was a competition run a couple of years back by the most excellent Mark X/brokenTV that had a very simple premise - you choose a song, other people choose songs, people vote for the best song.

It was utterly brilliant, so we're going to do it again. I've mostly cribbed the rules pretty much directly from the previous version, so here's how it's going to work.

There will be eight initial rounds, each lasting one week. These will be run in a league style, with players put into groups to compete. At the end of eight weeks the top two (probably, depending on the number of groups) will go into a knockout over the following few weeks.

Each person nominates one song a week, and submits it either as a Youtube vid or an MP3 uploaded to the awesome BeeX MP3 player. A poll thread is then announced where all users vote on their favourite song - songs will be anonymous, so no-one will know who chose which song until the results of that week are announced.

The first couple of weeks will be theme-free, then the next couple will be themed by me, then the following four weeks will be themed by the lowest scoring players in weeks 3-6.

So, that's the idea. We'll probably start a week monday so plenty of people get a chance to sign up.

Signups and/or questions in this thread, please!

Oh, and as Supreme Commander of Song Wars, I reserve the right to substitute any songs I find personally abhorrent with ANYTHING I SEE FIT.

There should be a couple of weeks' notice of the themes. You can either give me your choices in advance or let me know what you want and I can sort out uploading. We can sort something out, I'm sure.

You all send me a PM with a link to the vid you want to pick, and I put them anonymously into a post for each group.

I'm assuming cutting down a 30 minute prog rock wank-a-thon into 5 minute segments will count as 6 rounds worth and not 1?

This sounds brilliant and I want to join in. I also would like to nominate Nervous Pete to join in as well so I can prove to him once and for all that Belle and Sebastien are rubbish and no-one in the world actually likes them.

FFS, thinking about most of the folks on here these days it'll no doubt be a Glee song that wins.

Hurrah! Thanks to DrCuriosity for making me aware of The Reanimated Song Wars on Twitter, I too would very much like to take part.

On and off since the original Song Wars, I've been musing how to bring it back in a revamped format - somehow utilising the power of Spotify or Blip.fm to streamline it all, or even some kind of online "Hot or Not" ranking system for songs thrown at you in a random order. Problem is, people who don't use Spotify or Blip would be left out, and the ranking system would have become a tremendous chore to put in place (and, I suspect, for everyone to use). So, the original and best version it is, then.

Craster wrote:

Don't forget the original Song Wars ad-hoc rule where if someone fails to nominate a song in a given week, you pick a deliberately terrible song on their behalf that no-one in their right mind would ever EVER vote for. And then despair of the sake of humanity when it goes and wins that week's voting. (Whigfield's Saturday Night, I think it was.)
