Coincidentally I was also in the garden yesterday and also saw a moth. Not as cool though, despite what its name implies it looks nothing like a gigantic cat.

They have one of the largest wingspans of birds of prey in the UK - think there's only a few species that are wider (eagles)

Ooh, maybe you know this then - do red kites tend to (out-)compete buzzards?

One was circling over ours a couple of weeks back, first time we've seen one round here in 6 years, and also this year we're seeing basically no buzzards instead of at least one successful breeding pair - a lone one has appeared again this last week, only seen it twice in that time instead of daily.

The buzzards and local murder of crows always fight though, and the crows are really succeeding (huge number of the noisy bastards now), so maybe that's a contributor.

I know that they're not that strong despite their wing size, but they're good at stealing food from birds in flight, so if they're nicking the buzzards kills, maybe?

I did not actually know that, I am starting to wonder if the birds I see on the moors are not red kites after all!

I will try and take a picture (although I might have some already, so I'll check that too)

The tail is the giveaway, they have a distinctive forked tail (although as per your photo it can be quite subtle at certain angles) that other birds of pray don't

Yeah, I went through my pictures, and I found some, but they were taken on my old phone, and they are too far away to see the tail shape in them.

I see them quite often on the moors, just need my knee to get better, the weather to get good, and to remember to take my camera and then hope they are out and about.

The first shot was taken while standing on the Athabasca Glacier, near the Columbia Icefield in the Jasper National Park, in Canada.

Second shot was taken at Moraine Lake, in the Banff National Park (again, in Canada)

Third shot was taken a short walk away from the hotel that we were staying at in Banff, the Banff Springs Hotel.

What, my English scenery shot isn't good enough for you or something?
