I don’t know what particular group of friends my mother is referring to, but I figured someone here might be more useful than the knitting or gardening crowds?

She bakes all her own bread, so it’s not preservative-added supermarket bread she’s talking about.

Don't ask me, I spin the loaf closed, tuck it under and then put it on top of my (wooden, lift off top) bread bin

Bread doesn't last long enough in my house to go mouldy.

You both have great futures in answering Amazon product questions.

I bought one of these https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/magasin-br ... -66914300/
The main buying criteria was that I was in IKEA and it was in front of me.

Wood is slightly porous and so I was worried it would potentially harbour moisture in a humid London kitchen.

I picked one for her.

Apparently storing your bread within a cloth or brown paper bag WITHIN the bread bin can help, as it acts as a secondary barrier to prevent spores from landing on it, whilst preventing excess humidity.

It seems unlikely to last longer in a breadbin if there's no preservatives in it

I think it’s because out of a bread bin it’s in either something like a bag or plastic container that’s making any moisture in the bread ‘sweat’, plus a container of some sort might help with any environmental bacteria.

Will pass on top about fabric or paper bag, thank you!

We have this one

https://www.wesco-shop.co.uk/products/g ... iUQAvD_BwE

Bread rarely goes mouldy, just hard if left too long. It's a bid excessive but was a gift.
