I might qualify for that student deal...I'll have to have a check next time I'm in college and see what my email address ends in, apparently that's what decides it.

My work email ends in .ac.uk :p

I'll might give this a try, need to look closer to make sure it's a full-installable version though and not just an upgrade that has to be installed over vista.

I was about to say surely it must be otherwise every time you had to reinstall you'd have to put Vista in first, but... ?:|

I *think* upgrade probably just means that you need to be able to supply a valid key for XP, not that it will only install over the top of another Windows version.

I did wonder. I have a valid vista key (well, an OEM one) but pirated XP MCE. Will have to look into it further, I only really read the page briefly.

They say 5-7 days after dispatch, but I'm in no rush to do another fresh install of it. I could have done with the £50 being taken next week, mind.

Yes, the buggers (PC World, but same bastards) did the same to me and then called me this morning to say my card had been declined (as they tried to take it on the 14th and I get paid on the 15th). I patiently explained that when I'd ordered in July I'd actually called them to ask specifically when the money would be taken and they'd said that it would definitely not be until the 22nd, and therefore if they'd stuck to their word there would have been no problem.

Response was "well, we've had a lot of orders from some months ago and need to make sure in advance that people haven't changed their card since then". I pointed out that if people change their card, forgetting that they've got a payment due from the card then it's their problem and it's actually quite annoying to have them try and take money eight days before they said they would.

They then offered to leave it another week, but I said they may as well take it now. Doesn't really address the point though - obviously it hasn't made much difference to me ultimately (a couple of minutes of wasted time on the phone), but say someone knows they'll have the money for this in their bank account by, say, the 18th, but need the £50 they've got left until then to live on, then they'd be pretty much screwed over by these lying sods.

Of course this is going to get caught up in the postal strike, isn't it? Given Royal Mail's recent performance in London, I'm looking forward to getting my copies sometime in January.

Yep, the bastards. And I could have sworn when I looked up the section on 'When will you charge me?' it didn't mention anything about taking money in advance for pre-orders, else I wouldn't have bothered.

They're on rocky ground there; they've sent me confirmation but clearly state they won't be dispatching for another week.

But this is PC World. Looking at the rocky ground, thinking they should know better - especially because they're only wearing flip-flops - then strolling out anyway and breaking their ankle is part of the business model.

Windows Easy Transfer tool

It helps migrate accounts, settings and data etc form XP and Vista.
The WIN 7 disk has it on, and it is easy to use..

That's surprisingly good news. I'm not sure if they've got a different despatch policy from PC World, but my email from the latter said this:

Quote:
PLEASE NOTE: If you have pre-ordered a copy of Windows 7 this will not leave our warehouse any earlier than Wednesday 21st October (the day before the official launch date). You should expect delivery to be 5-7 days after this date.

Which is a bit shit, frankly, especially given their already dodgy taking-payment-a-week-before-they-said-they-would shenanigans, and the fact that Royal Mail will probably boot the package around a warehouse for a fortnight.

That's exactly the same as Dixons, from reading their web site a few days ago when my "We're taking your money!" email came through.

I wonder if mine will arrive soon, then.

Aye, I'm not getting my hopes up. But as I said earlier in the thread: it's only going to sit around until I can be bothered installing it, and I'm in no rush.

Does anybody know if there are any major differences between the Release Candidate and the retail version, then?

Not sure, but as retail is supported fully why not change?

One of them isn't going to explode in 6 months.

A package has arrived for me. I am expecting Forza 3 and two of Windows 7, so I expect it's one of the latter.

Yup I would rather install retail rather than wait for it to get to the reboot every 2 hours stage

Did you like the £1/min* support sticker on the outside that I half suspect wasn't put there by Microsoft?

* Don't worry, each call is limited to a maximum of 20 minutes. So that's alright then?
