I have copied the settings from my other laptop onto this, and yet still I can't get the email to work.

Please, doctor BEEX, tell me what I have done wrong.

Shouldn't the username have an @ rather than a +? Like the email address, I mean.

I tried it with an @, also just 'eskimimi' but neither work

I put the + sign to try that as that is, for some reason, how it is set up on my other laptop. None of these options works though.

I am flummoxed.

That's odd. According to this page: http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answ ... swer=86393 the username should be the same as the email address.

Do you get any particular error message when you try to access your mail?

OK - I have fixed it - if I enter my email address as '[email protected]' instead of '[email protected]' the mac goes on and finds all of the settings automatically, and despite that not actually being my email address it all works fine now, both for sending and receiving.

well, more stupid not having the same name in every country stuff

Well, it started out as Gmail over here in the UK, Romanista - my other google email account is a gmail.com account, but they were sued by a company who had apparently already been using 'gmail' as a name for some time, so had to set it so that all new accounts sign up here were 'googlemail.com', but so many gmail.com accounts were given out by then that they couldn't very well backtrack.

You can still get a gmail acount if you sign up in the US, I think, not sure about elsewhere in Europe or the world in general.

Yeah, mine is still a gmail.com one.

By the time I signed up it had gone to googlemail, but I can still use @gmail.com to log in, and emails sent to gmail work ok. It just displays googlemail when I log in (except on picasa?)
