I really enjoyed the latest one. It was cars going sideways with noise and Laguna Seca.

And Sabine! And the Extra Gear presenters Rory Reid and Chris Harris.

Honestly, if it was just those three doing the show it'd be much better.

I dunno I think Sabine is pretty bad, perhaps it's just the second language thing but she seems like a driver first and foremost and like most sportspeople they don't usually seem to make the best presenters.

Yeah, her job is to just drive like a nutter and scream "slow down, you bitch" while hurtling into corners.

Going well then.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06 ... -audience/

Quote:
Chris Evans is to take a less prominent role at the helm of Top Gear, after viewing figures for the newly revamped motoring show slumped to a new low.

The third episode of Top Gear, the first to feature motoring journalists Rory Reid and Chris Harris, received positive reviews, but was watched by a live audience of just 2.37 million viewers, down nearly half a million on the previous week.

The programme, which recorded the second-lowest audience figures since Jeremy Clarkson revived the motoring show, in 2002, received plaudits from viewers for the performances of Reid and Harris, who usually host the online spin-off show, Extra Gear.

Reid, who won his slot on the show via a public audition, was shown testing the new Ford Focus RS, while Harris, who has a cult following on YouTube, featured in a film involving Ferrari’s F12 TDF.

But!

Quote:
While Evans and Matt LeBlanc will continue to anchor the studio recording, it is understood that prerecorded material featuring both of the lesser known presenters will feature more prominently in the rest of the series. Reid wrote on Twitter yesterday: “We are on the main show every Sunday now.”

I'm not sure the latter can be in reaction to anything - all that stuff's been done already.

You can recut to use more footage from the others than you'd originally planned to.

They need to give it a bit of time instead of just panicking. But I doubt it'll ever get the figures it used to, seems like it's some weird moral stance to not watch it for Clarkson fans.

Or it's a bit crap. The reasons don't really matter, though.

Yeah but I mean that however good it gets it'll likely never get back a lot of the people who watched it before.

The bit with the Chris guy was really good, as was the Rory guy. Their enthusiasm was infectious.

Have you watched Extra Gear on the iPlayer? It's mostly Rory and Chris H, and has been great so far.

But they still have a guest, which is a bit annoying.

Last night had some very good bits, but it's still not a patch on the Clarkson version at it's best.

Yeah, but the last five series of Top Gear haven't been as good as its best. I just think the whole format has run its course.

The better segments so far have been the more straightforward car focussed ones like the Vulcan and Tesla.
The challenges have been really poor. This is the ideal opportunity to ditch the stale bits like that but keep what works.

Instead they are trying to do too much of a straight copy.

Some wag has managed to get this poster onto whatever service it is that gives DVD covers up to media servers like Plex.

Good work that person.

The BBC news page ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36707266 ) says "Clarkson was fired from the show after he punched a producer following a row about the provision of food late at night while filming on location.", which is somewhat different to "we're going to let your presenting contract run out, but you'll still own a chunk of the show".

I wonder if they'll change it - they have in the past.

He gets money every time the series is renewed, so does Andy Wilman. Probably something to do with them authoring the format, or something.

Ah, here we are: http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-enter ... 12626.html

Not that he'll even feel that if the £10m a year figure quoted for The Grand Tour is true.

I'm sure I asked this before, but do Amazon count as a broadcaster as far as Broadcasting Standards is concerned?

Yes. They're covered by Ofcom because they're delivered by Amazon UK. Netflix is not regulated in the UK because it's fully incorporated abroad.

I don't really see why the Top Gear story is the biggest story on the BBC site at the mo, but at least it means Farage's photo getting a little smaller.

Looking at Google News there appears to be some stories about Evans under investigation for inappropriate sexual behaviour in his past

So far only the flag ship of truth, The Daily Mail and OK Magazine are running this though, every other paper is just focused on the Top Gear story.

Guess there is a good chance this is bollocks then :D

It was clearly good, funny padding though. You may not have liked it, but it was the world's most highly syndicated TV show for a reason.

Unless you mean it's shit and unfunny with LeBlanc and Evans doing it here, and I've misunderstood.

I think it was surely on its last legs anyway, it had got so repetitive. If they're going to do anything with Top Gear then it'll need to be something other than a remake of The Jeremy Clarkson show but with someone else reading his lines.

I agree, it needed refreshing, or just a bloody good long break. Top Gear w/Clarkson is still funny to me, but that's because I only watch the odd episode every couple of weeks/months. It really isn't something for constant rotation like on Dave or whatever that channel is called now. After so many series, it's fair to say that it had, or was close to, running its course.

There is definitely space for a car show with a good sense of humour and fun. Striking the balance, and getting engaging presenters with some chemistry, is obviously tricky.

Top Gear on Dave is the most watched Digital programme after Sky Sports football coverage.

It really hadn't run its course.

Up until the end of the CMH Top Gear, yeah.

Which is what we're talking about. Keep up, Myp.

It hasn't been good for ages though. 2002-2010 it was pretty untouchable. I've seen some of the more recent stuff and it's almost embarrassing. Definitely of its time.

I suppose I should add, that for me, it has. Funny as it was there are only so many times I can watch the old episodes.... and the more I watched them the creakier and more stale the newer (C,H,M) ones seem.
