Better yet, keep the netrunner cards and play high stakes netrunner for large amounts of gold. Use the gold to make jersey milk bottle tops, sell the milk bottle tops to a milk farmer (in jersey), then use that money to buy a rover Sd1

Quote:
A MAN who crashed a car containing numerous containers of petrol during a high speed police chase across Bradford was “driving like a lunatic,” the sentencing judge said.

Hassan Iqbal, 20, sped off in a Volkswagen Golf fitted with false registration plates after the police became suspicious of him on the afternoon of February 28.

He was pursued in a “blue light chase” along roads including Little Horton Lane, Laisteridge Lane, All Saints Road and Great Horton Road at 3.45pm, before smashing into a police vehicle and hitting a lamppost.... fled on foot and put up “a fierce struggle” while being apprehended.....There was a strong smell of petrol from the Golf and it was found to be carrying “numerous containers of petrol”....pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and to driving without insurance and a licence.....
caused many vehicles to swerve to avoid him as he jumped red lights, overtook slow moving lines of traffic, mounted the kerb and ignored Give Way signs."To put it colloquially, he put his foot down,” Mr Gregg said.

And what does one get for this?

Quote:
Judge Paul Watson QC said only Iqbal’s prompt plea of guilty had saved him from an immediate custody as he sentenced him to a 12 month community order, with 250 hours of unpaid work and a ten day rehabilitation activity requirement with the probation service.

Iqbal was also banned from driving for two years, and until he takes an extended test.

Oh.

Something a bit more substantial than what was given. It hardly sends a message of deterrence.

Yes. It has red on the bottom of it. I was hoping for a light to turn on.

8 litres left when gauge is past red. Rover does 33mpg

Gaywood stored his car at my place for a bit while he was moving into London, and I drove it back down when I visited him one time. It needed fuel, but I didn't want to stop at the first place I went past, so I carried on down the motorway.

The next place was shut. The next next place was shut. I finally coasted into a petrol station with this on the dials:

I think that the car didn't have a handbrake. It was an odd automatic thing.

Maybe it did, and it didn't have park. There was something strange about it, I remember that.

The missus will drive on zero for 2 days saying "there's loads left. 20 miles at least". She's never run out as far as I'm aware.

I get twitchy when the light comes on even though I know there's at least 60 miles left in the big old diesel tank

I've gone twenty miles past zero in the Bravo that I had, and then put in 55.5 litres into a 55 litre tank which was taking a huge risk.
My GF gets nervous when her car is down to a quarter of a tank and showing 100 miles remaining, even though her commute to work and back is 6 miles.

I've run out of fuel two, maybe three times. All when I was younger and didn't really care much, knowing that I had mates that I could call that would come and help out.

This was all prior to the 'distance remanning estimates' that more modern cars have. I think they actually make me more nervous than a simple E---F fuel gauge, the temptation is to watch them ticking down.

Finally got a proper full-speed blast over the mountain mile this morning on the way to work. (The mountain section of the course has been one-way for TT (when the roads are open to the public) since Saturday but due to a combination of road closures for accidents, days off work, too much traffic when I have been up there, and not being arsed to go up there just for a blast like I used to in the past, this morning was the first chance this year to properly go at it - as I got the stretch of road to myself on my way to work at 6:30am.)

Anyway, whilst the Merc was still (slowly) accelerating, I'd only just topped 130mph when I started slowing down for the bends at the end of the mountain mile, which isn't amazing considering its claimed top speed of 153mph - I imagine you'd need a substantial stretch of Autobahn to actually manage 153mph.

What I will say though is it was incredibly quiet and comfortable at that speed, if I'd have been in the passenger seat with my eyes closed I'd have probably guessed it was doing 60-70mph.

I'll see if I can improve on that speed in subsequent runs by getting the lines a bit better going onto the mountain mile, and leaving the braking a bit later, but I'll be surprised if I can manage anything north of 135mph.

So can you legally drive at 130mph on this stretch during this set up?

You can all year round, we don't have a national speed limit here so whenever you pass the national speed limit sign you can legally go as fast as you want, subject to not driving like a cock. (You can still get done for driving without due care and attention, dangerous driving etc.)

The difference over TT is they make the mountain section of the course one way, so you know that there will be no oncoming traffic at any point. (You can see down the entire length of the mountain mile anyway, there are no blind corners, but I still don't like going that fast on a two-way road.)

I should note we do have speed limits, we still have all the usual 20/30/40/50/60 signs, but national speed limit stretches are derestricted.

Here's a video from a visitor a couple of years ago, he hits 181mph on the same stretch of road. Note this is a normal person on a normal bike on an open public road - this isn't a race situation.

I always reset my trip counter when I fill up and turn off for more fuel when it hits 350. Got it over 400 once or twice but didn't enjoy the experience.

I have to admit, whilst I love the idea of not having a speed limit, I'd not drive at those sorts of speeds on the roads featured in that video - even when it's "one way" - you can't legislate for idiocy and if anyone turned up that road the wrong way because they didn't know/realise it was one way, that's an accident waiting to happen.

I'd happily travel at those speeds on motorway style roads, though. I always wanted to take my M5 to Germany and have a crack on the autobahns, but unfortunately didn't have a mortgage for the fuel costs.

Well yes things like this do happen.

I only go flat out if I have the road to myself, any other traffic and I slow down, one way or not.

I got the Scooby out there at 5:30am on a Sunday morning, that managed 153mph before I ran out of road IIRC.

There is the option to just avoid the mountain road completely if you're travelling from the North to the South, and go over the coast road instead, most of which has speed limits on it and has a solid police presence enforcing them. (That's the route I go if I have my family in the car.)

I got our old Mundano up to 140 on the Autobahn before the automatic speed limiter in the back seat (ie. Mrs Grim...) complained.

I find the level of concentration needed at 90+mph tiring, so I tend to just do about 85mph on the motorways now.

There is a Supercar Club that visits every year for the first weekend of TT fortnight, I'm sure it's just a coincidence that it coincides perfectly with the one way system being put into place......

@GazChap - The signage for the one-way system is incredibly comprehensive, with coned single-lane sections, massive NO ENTRY signs, a comprehensive publicity campaign, big billboards all around course areas, ONE WAY signs at every possible entrance to the road - and so on.

As such I'd like to say it's impossible for anyone to get onto the course and go the wrong way, but every year someone actually manages it..... (Craziest speeder so far this year is someone getting clocked at 135mph in a 60 zone.)

I took the M5 on a Vmax day once and was frightened at just how quickly it got to 150mph, and showed no signs of running out of puff.

With a good tailwind and a slight hill on the motorway I got a Renault 5 Campus up to 107 once and I bet it was scarier than either of those. Seeing how fast it can go used to be one of the first things to do but I can't remember the last car I took to it's terminal velocity.

They're limited to 155mph though, aren't they? (Apparently it charges all the way to 155 then the electronic fun police steps in; personally I think it's total bullshit, because at 155mph you're dead anyway, what's the difference between letting in go unrestricted to 165mph or whatever)

Bloody speed restricter at 155mph..... genius idea whoever dreamt that one up.
Porsche basically gave it two fingers to the other German manufacturers; all their cars have no such things in place. Mind you, I notice Audi are charging £2000 a pop to let their RS6 do 170mph, so they're making money taking something off that shouldn't be there in the first place!

The scariest top speed I ever did was a tonne in my first car - a 1976 vintage, diarrhea-yellow Mk 1 Golf 1600LS with bald/mixed tyres, body full of holes, not a drop of oil left in any shock absorbers and steering that only seemed notionally connected. Scared me *shitless* (see also: 100mph on a wild RD-400 Yamaha a year or so earlier, with "ditchfinder" Chinese tyres, iffy oil injection and a penchant to hole a piston at any given second. I still remember steeling myself and clenching my teeth, waiting for, and looking at that old speedo needle shaking around the magic tonne lol). Whereas, 150mph in the Cayman S is a luxurious, event-free breeze; the car feels utterly planted and still has another ~30mph left in 7th, probably shows 190mph indicated flat-out. I've never tried. Even the big ol' Harley races up to a tonne in a few short seconds, and is utterly planted when she gets there, no drama whatsoever (the motor's only doing around 3,500RPM in top, even at this speed lol). Speed really is relative.

One of the scariest thing's I've ever done was be in the back seat of an old Vauxhall Nova going at about 95mph. You could tell it really wasn't up to it, and God knows what might have happened if we had hit a pothole or needed to break suddenly.

Driving fast on the motorway isn't particularly exciting though. I would love a crack at the TT course.

Yeah, the Ford was still pulling pretty hard at 140 (and it had five people + luggage in it).

The limiter had been soft-chipped away, so I'm not sure where it would stop.

Scariest was either 110-ish in a Fiat Ducato Maxi minibus, or 90-ish as a passenger going around Nürburgring.

Get on the boat then, soft lad. It's about £180 for a car+1. I can't guarantee it'd be that price during TT/practice week, mind. We could have a (Isle of) Man Meet!

A good plan. I've always wanted to visit, and I have family there I've never met.

They're officially limited to 155mph, but most people stated that the limited would kick in at 170mph indicated.

Mine was derestricted so would have quite happily gone up to 203 if I'd had a long enough stretch of road and a big enough set of balls.

203mph?? lulz, I don't think so old man. :)
Sure, the M5 has a monster engine but it's a heavy, unaerodynamic chunk of a saloon; the much more powerful but similarly chunky Audi RS6 does 170mph when derestricted IIRC.
Shit, even my mate's GT-R (which is "Stage 9" and has had tens of thousands forked out on the engine alone) doesn't quite do the double-tonne, despite wasting GSX-R 1000s at the lights & 800bhp+ as dynoed.
Sure, gearing is important here too, but aerodynamics are a massive big deal at anything over 160mph, and it's a Square Law, too.
These big supersaloons certainly have their place, but for ultimate top speed it really does need to be a sports car (or bike :) ).

I did one of those "Drive a supercar" thingies a few years back. The Audi R8 I drove hit 130 without any dramas and would've gone a lot faster if we hadn't run out of road. The dude in the passenger seat was very critical of my deceleration skills. I believe the quote was "Have *some* respect for the drivetrain, man!"
