He's the straight man to the entire precinct. Which does mean he's rarely hilarious in and of himself but he plays an important role nonetheless.

I have been watching the currently airing Spider-Man cartoon (Ultimate Spider-Man) and I think it's better than one from the 90s. It's actually made by a lot of the same people, and also Paul Dini (BTAS). It's got a great sense of humour, and a phenomenal voice cast (JK Simmons reprises his role as Jameson, the dude that plays Agent Coulson in the movies does the voice for him, Terry Crews is Blade, Donald Glover plays Miles Morales, Mark Hamill does some of the villains, a few of the actors from Futurama show up too).

I guess it's not exactly part of the MCU, but it's clearly adjacent to it, what with Coulson being in it. It charts a young Spider-Man early in his career being recruited by SHIELD, with cameos from all over the place (I guess Marvel have unrestricted rights to use characters like the Xmen and Spider-Man and the Avengers in animation, it's only movie rights that they don't entirely hold).

It's part of the same continuity as the also excellent Guardians of the Galaxy cartoon, and there is an Avengers one that I haven't yet watched.

It's pretty self aware, has regular cut aways to Spider-Man's internal diaglogue, and has some nice action sequences.

Nothing earth shattering, but if you like superhero cartoons this is one of the better ones imo.

If it's the same as the Ultimate comics line (and it sounds like it) then it's set in another one of the multitude of Marvel universes that existed up until recently; specifically the Ultimate universe (I can't remember it's numeric designation). It was started as a way to essentially start all the characters from scratch without affecting the ongoing primary universe. Marvel thought that the massive weight of continuity meant that comics from the primary universe were really hard to get into for new readers because of all the assumed knowledge required to understand them. The Ultimate universe was an attempt to lure in new readers by starting from scratch and letting them get in on the ground floor. It also gave the writers more flexibility to experiment with the characters, hence stuff like Peter Parker being killed off and a new young black Spiderman in the shape of Miles. The series that came out of it varied wildly in quality but when it was good it was excellent and Ultimate Spiderman was almost certainly it's biggest success.

Yep. I gather it's a somewhat loose adaptation of that (I think the changes are primarily the stuff they have taken from the movies), but I'm not really familiar with the comics.

I think you're being a bit harsh there, I've been enjoying it, even Episode One which was by far the weakest but still entertaining, if you took it on its own terms - I don't think anyone was expecting high art from a new season of X-Files.

On balance I'd say it's probably better than I was expecting, although I really wasn't expecting much, plus there's still one episode to go.

I'd welcome a second series, it's more interesting than The Walking Dead has become IMO.

Episode Six of the new X-Files was enjoyable pap, but I must stress the 'pap' side of things. Episode Three would suggest even they're not taking it seriously, but Epsiode Six didn't seem to have much tongue in cheek about it.

It was entertaining telly, and I'd definitely be on board with another season if they make one, but I wouldn't mourn if it didn't happen.

Also, Gillian Anderson's slightly strange face (botox? plastic?) and constant husky voice which I'm not sure is an affectation or some sort of throat infection, are starting to grate a bit as well.

Episode 6: Just unwatchable garbage. Seriously, I turned it off after 35 minutes. What a waste of everyone's time this revival was. If it wasn't for the brilliance of episode 3 and Scully being my new fave crush I'd rather have supped spoonfuls of mcguffin's spaffy yogurt out of a rancid toss bucket than watch another episode of this.

I don't think it's any worse than what TWD is dishing up these days, whereas neither are anywhere near as good as Season 2 of Better Call Saul, for example.

I'm looking forward to the next series of FTWD though.

I'm just comparing one thing to another. (Y'know, like, different American TV series in the 'General Purpose US TV thread'.) I don't watch much telly so the same names tend to crop up with some regularity.

So for TWD and X-Files, I'd probably peg them both at around 6/10. (That's for TWD as it is now, the early seasons were a lot better IMO.)

Just coming off a four year hiatus from South Park. I'd gotten about a third of the way through Season 16 before just dropping it completely.

Some great eps so far. Love the UPS man ep and the Blockbuster Video/Shining one. The latter had me in stitches.

There has been some good South Park, but the latest season was rubbish I thought.

The running gag about being "censored" by "PC" would have far more impact if they hadn't been making jokes about anything and everything since the 90s. They have a massive platform from which they are able to criticize and satire anything they want. They have exercised their right to freedom of speech more than pretty much anyone else on TV, and it comes across more as them wanting to be able to dish it out, but never have anyone criticize them.

There were a few gems in Season 16. I've just watched season 17 Ep 1 though and thought it was pretty shit. It could be because I no longer live in the USA (so I missed a shit ton of politics) or just that it's shit any way.

I prefer it when the eps have a theme tbh. It's much more fun when you know what they are ripping on and can laugh at it. The BBV/Shining episode was excellent.

Anyway, I love The Captain. he's the best character. But Terry is the best character.

See, the captain is a great character: he's written and performed excellently, however Terry is just awesome and great in every way, which makes him BEST.

I still love Terry and the captain. The episode with emotional Captain and Rosa was ace. I have a problem with Scully and ___ (whatever his name is), though they've gone from bumbling non-entities to being kinda jerks, and though I didn't 'like' the characters before, now I dislike them. But they are small and incidental enough not to make a dent. Series started a bit slowly with the captain pushed aside, but once he's back at the 99 it's all amazing. I like Gina more in this series, too.

I think in 3-4 seasons time when it is becoming crap, we will look back on S3 as being the peak. So many excellent episodes. The Xmas one was awesome.

Lately my lady and I have been struggling for things to watch. We tried Bedlam (I know, it's British) but thought the first episode was rather poo so we tried one about a guy who turns himself in then works with the FBI (forget the name now but he works with a young lady who is new) but thought that was silly too.
