Using their bare hands apart from in the photos where they're using gloves.

I object to the fact that this is a link to the daily mail, and therefore you should really know better.

The Daily Mail is rubbish. That we can all agree on but I don't see what the story is here? How else do we think the sandwiches are made?

Supermarkets have their minimum standards and do surprise inspections. Also, you probably cannot get on to the factory floor without going through handwash stations.

No, because I expect them to wash etc. Same as I would with any chef.

If the arrticle was that they weren't washing, there may be a point, but that's just the mail being the trash rag that it is.

Yeah, there's no story here. Given that they're all wearing hair nets and that the bearded folk (men and women lolzorz) are wearing beard nets too, they clearly actually have hygiene procedures in place. I would imagine that if you're sick in any way you're not allowed on to the factory floor either.

That said, my Dad did a stint in a pork pie factory once. He used to love pork pies, they were his snack of choice during his daily visit to the pub. He stopped eating them after working there, because he'd be working and the sweat would be running off his bald head, under the hairnet, down to his nose, and dripping off the tip of his nose into the pie.

Every restaurant you ever go eat at has food made with bare hands, and they certainly don't re-scrub their hands every time they touch their face

I imagine the gloves aren't for hygiene, I would bet they're for those workers who don't want their hands to smell of tuna all day.
Or possibly if someone has a cut, as they don't want to risk the old blue-plaster-in-sandwich problem.

I work in a bottling factory for alcohol and it's classed as a food manufacturing site. Before we can go into any production area we have to pass through a hand wash station with antibacterial soap and we have previously received training on how to wash our hands properly.
If you've ever been to a wedding a eaten some sandwiches at the evening reception, I can almost guarantee they were prepared by the wait staff who served the meal earlier and they won't have underwent such strict hygiene procedures. They were probably munching on the sandwiches at the same time as preparing them as well.

Even more of a crime is that it's now seemingly impossible to buy a sandwich on white bread. The real oppressed minority in Britain is the white sliced loaf.

A few years ago I went to one of our US offices, one lunchtime they took me to a place that was just the same as Subway but called something else.

I ordered the Italian meant foot long, there must have been £10 worth of salami and other similar meats in it

They have gloves because they handle money so take the gloves on and off. They change them for vegitairns too.

I guess it is a time saving thing more than hygine.

Yep, if the problem is bare hands, the nationality of those hands is pretty much irrelevant

Eh, it doesn't seem like a big deal really. As long as their hands are clean (and they clean again if they touch anything icky) I don't really see the problem. I don't see many articles about how chefs on TV cooking shows taste the sauces with the same spoon.

Although, one of the photos showed someone handling cheese with scratty looking fingers.

The most surprising thing really was that the plant makes three million sandwiches a day! That's a staggering number.
