How amazingly late 90s are you!? ;)

Incredibly.

A couple of years back, a friend told me about a theory he'd read. It said people were more receptive to music between the ages of 17 and 23. I thought for a bit and was all 'yup! Yupyupyupyupyup'.*

Quote:
I was at the album launch party in Boston for Cave In's Jupiter, that was a fun and crazy night!

I would show you how much I hate you right now, but my arms don't stretch that far. My own little (less glam) anecdote is quite nice though. Went into local hardcore punk shop to get Until Your Heart Stops. I'd heard good things about it. By that time, though, it was fackin' September 2001, wonnit, and they had the new one. So I got them both. Started with Jupiter.

In the nine years since, I haven't heard UYHS as much as I did Jupiter in that first month. Title track is perfect.

* That period, for me, was Aug 1997-Aug 2003. Telling!

In my quest to subject myself to music I have no idea about I exposed myself to an album called 'King of Jeans' by Pissed Jeans. I am assuming that it is a least partly meant to be humorous, I hope so anyway. Still, no idea how they rate on the Dimril 'WALL Of NOISE".

17-23 that would mean (for me) 92-98 hmmm, I do like music from then, (I was well into the britpop stuff) but then I like stuff from the 50s right through to now. I don't really have a favourite period.

Ha! I was just searching for this thread to ask if anyone else had heard any Mumford and Sons and I noticed this post. Excellent. I heard somewhere that there is some female singer who worked with them but now has solo stuff, does anyone know who that might be?

First time I took my Touch to the Apple Store to get fixed, the Genius tested it by grabbing a Mumford & Sons track because it was free.

I haven't been able to bring myself to listen to it yet.

I heard them getting played on the Scott Mills show which was unexpected since it dind't sound like Radio 1 typw music but I really liked them. Listened to them on Spotify a few times and I think I might get the album.

Yeah I was a bit bemused by that as well. Then I started trying to think of my top ten and gave up after about three seconds and then I got distracted.
I like a couple of the albums in the list, the Arcade Fire one and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were a couple of my favourites but I have others I would favour over them. I would have to include Biffy Clyro 'Blackened Sky' in there, I think it came out about 2001. Damien Rice 'O' as well.

Laura Marling. There's massive inbreeding between most of the New London Folk Scene, which means that nearly every band involved has toured - and often been more, uh, intimately involved - with Laura Marling at some point. See also: Noah and the Whale.

Well, Arcade Fire belong in there. Maybe something by Radiohead, too, but I'm not convinced that In Rainbows is the album I'd pick. But the rest? Pffft.

Excellent, cheers parm. I will give her a wee google later on if I remember. I have heard the name Noah and the Whale, why would I have heard that? Have they had chart stuff, or am I getting the feeling they are on a movie soundtrack?

'Turn on the Bright Lights' by Interpol is amazing; you should really check it out. Yes, the YYYs and Arcade Fire probably on the whole deserve to be there, too. The rest, not so much.

It's possible that Jen has mentioned Interpol to me before and I just haven't listened to them yet, I really do need to credit her with introducing me to a lot of good music. I only really find out about stuff through friends or if I hear it played somewhere since I rarely listen to the radio or watch music channels. I will have a look when I remember and see if we have any Interpol stuff.

TBF, it's my second favourite album in their top ten. At least three cracking singles on it, and very influential in the earlier half of the decade.

Primal Scream at #3? WTF? I thought it was musicians relevant to THIS decade!

I doubt Curiosity and me will ever agree on music.

Yes, they were influential - Influential in making all bands sound incredibly boring.

This. I cannot think of a singer who sounds any more like they just can't be arsed. Some of the music is reasonably catchy, though.

If you think that 'Last Nite' is a boring song, you may as well just not have opinions on music.

Liking X Factor has very little to do with my taste in music, which is a world away from the songs they tend to sing on the show.

I'm now wondering how many albums I've listened to that were actually released this decade.. it's probably about 10.

/living in the past (not the Jethro Tull album)

You are missing out on a few really good albums then! The White Lies album is really good and I love anything the Editors do.
Probably my most listened to albums are the aforementioned Biffy Clyro 'Blackened Sky', Damien Rice 'O' and then maybe some compilations like 2manyDJs or playlists I have created in iTunes. Oh and The Flaming Lips, Death Cab For Cutie, Tegan and Sara, Postal Service are wonderful and I also really like Ray LaMontagne...spent a lot of time listening to the John Martyn album but it's not really this decade ;) As well Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell. Sigur Ros and St Germaine get listened to often as well but I'm not sure when Touriste was made?

No. Music stopped in the late eighties. Everything since is a complex shared hallucination.

I don't like any of the singles from "Is this it?" despite quite liking the album now. Best album of the decade though :spew:

Excellent, cheers parm. I will give her a wee google later on if I remember. I have heard the name Noah and the Whale, why would I have heard that? Have they had chart stuff, or am I getting the feeling they are on a movie soundtrack?

They've had chart stuff - "5 Years Time" was their big single. You're possibly getting confused because they're named after a film, though. Or because their last album was the soundtrack to a film, but a film that was made for their last album to be a soundtrack to. If you see what I mean. Ish.

I'd disagree about White Lies, incidentally. Their album is a bland, commercial, by-the-numbers ripoff of Editors, who in turn are a slightly more commercially palatable version of Interpol, who are great. White Lies, though, are - at best - completely superfluous.

On a completely different note, I just picked up the new Fuck Buttons album, Tarot Sport, and it's really jolly good in a walls of intense shoegazey dancey electronic noise kind of way. Imagine a more intense, more danceable Maps, or if Underworld ran every piece of equipment they owned through 14 overdrive pedals and then turned it all up to 11. Worth a listen, but sadly not on Spotify.

Ah yes, 5 Years Time, I know that. Is it Juno that is from? Oh I like her voice then, I will really need to remember to investigate further.

I heard a White Lies song on the radio once and liked it, then I heard a 30 second clip advertising their album and liked it, then finally I was in HMV and it was playing so I asked who it was, found out it was them and bought it. I have enjoyed listening to it quite a lot, I really like his voice and there a few decent songs but to be fair I can see your point. I couldn't name any of the songs if I tried and although if I listened to them again I would enjoy it, I haven't had an urge to put the album on again for a wee while.
I really like Editors although I think I was a bit late to the party. I remember hearing a lot about them two years running when I was at T in the Park but never going to see them and it was only really about this time last year I pricked up my ears. Again it is his voice that really appeals to me but I love singing along with the tunes so I regret not seeing them at a festival.
Sounds like Interpol should be right up my street then.

This sounds very interesting, if I ever remember then I might have a wee look in Fopp or HMV or something.

Another album I forgot to mention is Anthony and the Birds, took me a few goes but I really love it now.

Gill, do you recognise anyone in this video?

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
It's Andy Mon, you first see him properly @ 2 minutes 40ish. They were off touring Yankeeland a wee while back... the cunts :DD
For everyone else it's a band one of me & Gills mates plays in, I keep forgetting about them even though they've got 2 albums out already  Anyhoo, this is their new single what came out yesterday & it's growing on me.

I saw them a year or so ago. My mates put them on a few times like, including fellow scottish bands like we were promised jetpacks and twilight sad. I played with twilight sad this summer actually, they were absolutely mortal.

That's a really good song actually. So are they doing alright for themselves? I've not seen him for years but he looks exactly the same as he did at school. What's their band called? I think I'll look out more of their stuff, I really like it.

You can't like X-Factor and Zing people.

Hey! What's wrong with the Zing People? They were great in 2002-4.

And not clicking on that BBC link. Not ever. No.My list's gonna be well better. I was hoping to get Cascada into it, but nah. The reaction would have been great, but it's not that good an album.

P.S. Primal Scream may be irrelevant at the minute, but XTRMNTR is their best album.
P.P.S. That Interpol debut was boring. well boring. The song from Friends was pretty good, but the album as a whole was boring. Like, Takk-level boring.
P.P.P.S. I got a text off a friend today, telling me that The Wire (magazine, not TV show) actually quoted one of my reviews. My writing! In the Wire! Time to get my pay on :D

Hey, you! I mentioned Frightened Rabbit about a page or so ago. They are fucking excellent, one of my favourite bands of the last couple of years. Midnight Organ Fight is a bloody astonishing album and, so far as I can tell, virtually impossible to find in normal shops so I can only get at it via Spotify. But it's one of my most listened to albums of recent times. Really, they're that good.

The overwhelming elephant in the NME office is: music is a lot more subjective than pretty much any other artform. If you don't like the sort of music they happening to be championing, then they're not really going to win you over. I really like The Strokes, but best album of The 00ies? Well, I'd say that was either t.A.T.u.'s "Dangerous And Moving", Grandaddy's "Sophtware Slump", The Knife's "Silent Shout", or Apples In Stereo's "New Magnetic Wonder", though I wouldn't expect a single person on this or any other forum to agree with me on any of those. If you say it's the latest Coldplay, Lighthouse Family or Jedward album, then who am I to agree with you? It's subjective! I might as well be asking which was your favourite type of biscuit or shadow cabinet minister.

For the NME, the problem is that when they did this ten years ago, their readership had little choice but to go "what? The Flaming Lips? Yeah, fair enough". Now, in this age of Last.fm, iTunes and Blip.fm, people have pretty much worked out which bands they don't already know they should be checking out. With that in mind, you'll understand why I decided against registering NewBiscuitExpress.com. But the NME still insist on saying "you need to like this!". And hey, good luck to 'em.

For my money, people should currently be listening to:

a) the first Amanda Blank album: http://open.spotify.com/album/7ew0GiLWOpq1fGTNivLv9N

b( The Crystal Castles 8-bit-tastic debut: http://open.spotify.com/album/75olNPlDKi2XQhTD9IPlVC

Or... not. Christ, it's the internet age. Go with what your peers like.

I'd be able to take NME more seriously if they didn't try to use the word 'definitive'.

OK Go's new video is superb. And, as usual, the video comprises one single take.

http://bit.ly/okgovidz

That's a link to their Youtube page. The video is called "WTF?"

There's also a rather excellent 'Making Of' video called "HTF?" showing how they did it in one go, and other things they tried that didn't quite work.

If it wasn't for the NME we wouldn't have found out that Morrissey is a rascist.

Andy never changes, in fact none of the fucking zoom-booters have changed much :DD

Aye, they're doing well & touring with Gomez just now (I think) & they've sold out the ABC (they're headlining that one) near Christmas.
& they're "Frightened Rabbit", but you've probably guessed that now.

I'll see if I can lay my hands on a copy if you want. Either through Andy (if he's back in the Shire at Christmas) or one of our local record shops (one of them's bound to have it).

It looks like Amazon have it back in stock now (I swear they didn't have it last time I checked). You could tell him that I think his album is very good, though. And I'm a sucker for special editions and things, so if you can lay your hand on any rarities or whatever, I'm pretty certain you'd be able to flog me some of that sort of thing :)

I'm listening to that album right now on Spotify, it is really good. Think this will have to be a purchase, I am hugely relieved that I like them and don't have feign praise if I see him at Christmas :) . I :luv: the sound of Scottish singers, I cringe a bit when I hear my accent being spoken on the TV because I don't think it's the nicest Scottish accent but in bands like this one and Biffy Clyro (and Glasvegas as well I suppose) I think it sounds superb.
