I have never glossed before. Any tips?

Put the heating on. The next few days are going to be cold and it won’t dry in the cold as I found out when we moved.

I used Johnstone’s quick drying gloss in Darwin’s room, which doesn’t smell, and dries in 2 hours rather than 2-3 days, but it’s not to everyone’s taste as it isn’t super-glossy, but personally I prefer that (and I find it doesn’t yellow as some glass paints do).

I actually worked a couple of summers (hence why I didn’t know it was a PITA getting gloss to dry in winter) with a painter and decorator when I was in my teens, and he’d always do gloss work first, but a lot of people work top to bottom (ceiling, walls, woodwork). As Jazzy says, it’s personal preference, but I did the woodwork first due to habit and also because of what Zardoz said about it being easier to clean.

If you’re doing a high contrast between the gloss and walls (which the Kovacs in you makes me think you will) then sometimes it can take a few coats of the colour over the white gloss to stop it showing the overlap.

That ceiling will look lovely when it’s sanded back to the wood.

Ceiling, walls, then he’ll have to sand the floor again.

Trying to be, it's why the initial stages are taking so long, but it's worth it to get that ground work in.

End of day three. All units built, adjustments made for wiring and plumbing. Most wall units on place. Having a good rest before we assemble the island and sort out more wiring tomorrow.

Use a brush

You're better off using a roller.

I prefer a dense foam roller for gloss work, also. If you find micro bubbles, just re-roller the surface after five minutes once the roller has very little paint left on it.

Jazzy, you look like you’ve made a huge amount of progress. Can’t wait to see it all completed.

:DD I’m kidding. But we’ve already seen your bathroom is as bold as your trainers. I know you didn’t pick that though, and to be honest we have want to rival it :D

I’ve bought this paper for two of the walls, and I’m going to paint the other two. Some of the textured wallpaper on the two walls that I’m wallpapering is damaged, so I can’t just Paint over that. I’ve got a sort of mushroomy beige/grey paint for the other two walls.

That sounds lovely, I really like the bird paper! Are you looking forward to having a whole room just for your crafts? I'm at the stage now where I need to start looking at some better storage solutions. I just made a drawer tidy out of part of an old cardboard box.

I really am, I think mostly for the huge difference it will make to have the sewing machine, overlocker and plotter ‘out’ and set up ready for use. I really struggles getting set up, and as I can’t work at tasks as long any more (sometimes only 15 minutes or so), I use up most of my energy getting everything prepared, or I decide not to bother because of all the set up. This will make a difference.

Sounds lovely, and that paper is so you, very pretty. :)

I totally relate to what you say about the hassle of setting everything up. I can't wait to have my sewing machine and overlocker more easily accessible.

I wish I'd have taken a shot before I cleared it out, almost felt like I was playing "The floor is lava" trying to find stuff in here. The next big job in the house (but not in the house) is getting this converted. 4 skylights and new lining/tiles, log burner, levelled concert floor and insulating/boarding. The concrete block supports are new, just needs a bit of packing/brakets then the old vertical wooden props can come out.

That looks amazing, Zardoz.

Edit: I’ve just realised it’s not a garage. Is it an outbuilding, or part of the main house?

Yeah it's a garage at the bottom of the garden.

Having this to do up was one of the reasons why we went for this house, there's another brick built utility room next to it that I've already converted.

Just having it as another lounge really. Keeping that raised platform at the back (maybe extending it out a bit) so maybe space to kip on. Pool table and TV / AV / games stuff but not sure what yet. Want a MAME cabinet and I'd love a pinball table but they're ridiculously expensive.

It's weird now it's all actually going ahead, been in the planning stage for some time now! I'll still need somewhere for my tools and tinkering so probably have that hidden away under the platform somewhere.

...or maybe go SHED SHOPPING!!!

I ordered some light yellow paint to decorate the planters, etc I want to put in front of the pink shed. I’ve been eagerly awaiting it arriving for three weeks, it finally got here today and they sent dark orange instead. I dropped them a line and they told me to ‘paint my fence orange instead. It’s a nice colour and will look good’ (eBay... obviously). I was about to respond when I got another message from a different person on the same account saying sorry, to keep the orange, they’d send the yellow by DHL this time and I’d have it by Wednesday.
