God of war (PS4)

I thought we had a thread for this already but looks like it was just in other event threads

New trailer from the Sony E3 event

The reviews for this are coming in and it's incredibly good by all accounts. They've changed the camera view, given you a companion to use/upgrade and added some exploration stuff in but apparently still retained the general feel of the previous games. I actually like the look of the combat more in this new one as there's a lot of blocking/rolling/parrying going on and it looks a lot less button mashy. Also, it's fucking beautiful because of course it is. I'll pick it up at some point but PS+ is killing me with games to play--not least with Bloodborne slowing my completion rate all the way down--so fuck knows when.

Looks amazing, nice to see Kingseeker Frampt has got more work since Dark Souls.
Wow. Solid 9/10’s all round by the looks of it.

It may jump ahead of a few games in the ever increasing backlog of great games I want. This gen is to be proving quite special.
I've never played any of these.

It's worth picking up the PS4 remaster of GoW3 at some point because it's a good game and even on the PS3 it looked fucking beautiful. It's not the smartest game in the world of course but it's good fun and a hell of a spectacle.

1st one was good, think I gave up on a twatty bit though...

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Was there something near the end with loads of the Kratoseses attacking you?
I’ve played them all (inc the PSP versions) but 2 & 3 are the most memorable. 2 (on the lowly PS2) ends with you riding on the back of a giant climbing up mount Olympus with Kratos screaming about killing all the gods. It’s a prerendered cutscene but it’s so bombastic and mental you’re like, damn, I want to play that. Then 3 comes out and it’s all like, riding giants up a mountain fucking up shit? Yup, you’re actually doing that. It was a momentous occasion for the PS3 that lives up to expectations.
I've also not played any of them. So it's worth giving the GoW3 remaster a go then.

Absolutely!
Do I need to know what happened in GoW1+2?
Plot synopsis - it ain’t the most complex story. Kratos is essentially just an ex-Spartan fucking psychopath.

Quote:
God of War 1: Kratos is angry at the God of War for tricking him into killing his wife and child. He kills the God of War and becomes the new God of War.

God of War 2: Zeus steals Kratos god power cause he’s a cunt. Kratos wants to fuck up Zeus for that. Kratos meets the Titans who also want to fuck up Zeus. Kratos fights Zeus but he escapes. It turns out, in an Empire Strikes Back stylee, that Kratos is actually Zeus' son. Zeus was afraid Kratos would usurp him cause Kratos is a bloodthirsty nutter. Kratos goes and gets the Titans and it ends with Kratos riding on the back of a Titan storming Olympus declaring that the rule of the Gods is over.

Now go play God of War 3. It was stunning on PS3 and I’ll bet it looks as good on PS4.
But the rule of the gods is over
Man, Kratos is a dick.
I'm genuinely not sure whether I should be rooting for the dude. Although, his sociopathy is hilarious.

Hermes totally deserved what he got, mind you.
Yeah, his delivery service is terrible.
That's GoW3 done, I actually really enjoyed it.
In fact I enjoyed it so much I'm downloading God of W4R right now.

I got about two thirds through that and was really enjoying it then some glitch fucked my save game. I couldn't be arsed replaying it all again so I never saw the rest of it.
The new one is like God of the Last of Us. Which is probably a good thing.

I like the new Kratos. Older, more mature, with that undercurrent of world-ending rage just beneath the surface. It makes it so absolutely glorious when he does flip out.

The combat is probably even more brutal than the old ones, amazingly. I think in the Greek trilogy there is a flamboyance to how Kratos fights that lightens the whole thing. It's more of a spectacle. New Kratos just fucking kills things. In the most efficient, bone-shattering, gore spewing method.

No QTEs so far. (Yay!)

Though I only played about about 1 hr 45mins after it unlocked at midnight so they may show up later.

Puzzles are pretty good too.
I watched a few videos about this today and was convinced it was a game I wanted to buy and play.

I fired up my XBox One X and went to the store.

You know how this story ends.

At least you can't have the 'wrong kind' of PC.

If you’re suggesting that all PCs can play all PC games, then I’ve got news for you. For a start, not all personal computers run Windows.
I'm with Hearthly. This does look ace.. I'm almost tempted to look into how much a PS4 will set me back.

Play it on your PC then.

Don't worry about how much money it'll set you back, just think how many friends it'll set you forward!
God of War has always been a Sony exclusive hasn't it? It's like firing up your PS4 expecting to be able to buy Halo.
Yeah, it's published by Sony.

It's really, really good. The writing is excellent. The two dwarves that act as shopkeepers are highlights.

Kratos knew Aesop, apparently.

I'm not familiar with the series at all so didn't know that, I was just watching review videos (in Edge!) about how amazingly awesome the game is whilst I was down in the kitchen cooking, and decided I'd buy it.

I'm not sure who wins really, it's not like I'm going to get a PS4 Pro just to play God Of War, so Sony neither sell me a copy of their game, or one of their consoles.

The daft thing is that the PS4/XB1 and PS4Pro/XB1X are very similar in hardware terms so it'd be a pretty simple port job.
Plenty of people choose to buy one or the other or even both consoles due to exclusive titles.
Sony paid for the game to be developed so I think it's fair enough. Embargoed timed exclusives can fuck off though.
I thought there wasn't much profit in the hardware though?

If Sony paid for the development of the game, wouldn't they want to sell as many copies as possible, even to XBox owners?

Maybe I'm missing some clever business stuff here, but to me it just seems stupid to deliberately not sell your game to millions of people.
I fail to believe that you, of all people, don’t get the business case for exclusivity. It looks like deliberate trolling.
But surely Nintendo want to sell as many copies of Mario as possible, hence the megadrive release...
Well it doesn't make any sense to me, just seems like a really good way to sell fewer games. Unless Sony/MS are making out like bandits on the hardware, or it's all about getting people locked into their 'ecosystem' and recurring payments for things like Gold/Game Pass/etc, it simply looks like a serious case of foot-shooting.

The days of people choosing a SNES or a Megadrive because they wanted Mario or Sonic are long gone, and with so much stuff being multi-platform these days (and so many other ways to consume games, not least mobile and tablet), console exclusives are something of an anachronism to my mind.
Exclusives probably are rarer these days, but when Xboxes and PS4s are very similar (at least to someone like me who doesn't keep up with either format), a few good exclusives could sway the decision for someone. I imagine a fair few people have stuck with Xboxes for Halo for instance.
You are aware of the licensing fee that they get for every game sold on their system, right?

It makes perfect sense for them to sell their systems over just selling games.

Oh right, I didn't know that, in which case it makes far more sense.

I thought that licensing fee stuff was shit Nintendo did in the 80s and 90s.

I'm really quite out of the loop on consoles.
Turns out we're up to God of War 4 on XB1X anyway, which is not only exclusive to XBox but also enhanced for XB1X.

Plus it's got soldiers with guns in it and shit, none of this primitive axe nonsense.

Another clear victory for Team Microsoft.

I’ve had to buy this. It’s, like, the biggest game eva at the minute and avoiding spoilers is almost like not watching an episode of Game of Thrones when it’s broadcast. Bloody social media. Sure, you can not click on any links but there’s always some twat that says “You won’t believe the twist end” or some shit.
I know, I never thought we'd see Hermes again, of all people. That was a shock.

(Not a real spoiler. Obv. )
I’ve played a couple of hours and as a miserable jaded gamer I’ve only two words to say:

Holy. Fuck.

This has blown me away. Mind you, I think it’s because I’ve put it on the highest difficulty available and the game plays like Dark Souls. 3 hits from the first enemy I met and I was dead. Two hits from some big fucker and I was dead. Dead, dead, dead. That’s when you git gud. And this combat feels GUD. Hard as fuck just like Kratos. Except when I’m playing him. He falls over a lot.
I’ve played up to the bit with the boat (ala Resident Evil 5). This game is fucking stunning, isn’t it? I’m amazed no one but me and Pundy have even played it.
I completed it a couple of weeks ago. It was fucking amazing.
I'm considering letting it jump my queue, but I'm not getting much gaming time in general at the moment for various reasons and I definitely want to get into Dishonored 2 so that still probably means it'll be like August or something.
He means boning.
Got this on a deal for £34 the other day (then promptly got noticed it was on offer for £22 but couldn't cancel it).

Played it a bunch over the weekend, an absolutely fantastic game so far. If you're sitting on the fence about whether or not to get it, go and get it you won't regret it.

A friend of mine finished his at the weekend and is posting it to me, looking forward to it (once I've finished being God of the Wasteland in Mad Max).
