Report: Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 coming this year

This year, Call of Duty will return to what is perhaps the franchise’s most popular subseries, Black Ops, for a fourth entry, according to a report from Eurogamer.

Citing multiple sources, Eurogamer reports that Activision subsidiary Treyarch is working on Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 for a launch “late in the year.” It would be no surprise for Treyarch to develop this year’s title — it is Treyarch’s turn in the three-year rotation that the Call of Duty franchise runs on, and the studio made the previous Black Ops games. Sledgehammer Games developed last year’s title, Call of Duty: WWII, and Infinity Ward made 2016’s entry in the series, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.

Eurogamer reports that Treyarch will “dial back” the futuristic sci-fi elements of the Black Ops series for the fourth game in an effort to “better fit the series’ recent desire for a more grounded feeling.” (Call of Duty fans savaged the debut trailer for Infinite Warfare, lambasting its dogfights in space and zero-gravity combat; Activision went in the complete opposite direction a year later with a World War II shooter.)

The initial speculation about this year’s Call of Duty game kicked off last week, fueled by tweets from the Nintendo-focused writer Marcus Sellars. Over the weekend, Sellars, who refers to himself as an “industry insider,” tweeted that Black Ops 4 was in development on PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One — the three platforms on which the two most recent entries in the franchise were released — as well as Nintendo Switch

Eurogamer said it has not yet confirmed a Switch version of Black Ops 4. The last Call of Duty title to appear on a Nintendo platform was 2013’s Call of Duty: Ghosts — both it and its predecessor, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, were released on Wii U. The only game that Activision has released on the Switch so far is Skylanders Imaginators; other third-party publishers have found success on the platform with mature-rated games, such as Bethesda Softworks’ recent port of 2016’s Doom.

Activision traditionally launches Call of Duty titles in early November. We’ve reached out to the company for comment on this year’s game, and we’ll update this article with any information we receive.

Sources: This year's COD is Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
BLOPS on the ground.

This year's Call of Duty game is Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, multiple sources have confirmed to Eurogamer.
Black Ops 4 is in development at Treyarch, the Activision studio behind the three other Black Ops games, and as you'd expect is due for launch late in the year.
The Black Ops storyline so far has covered the Cold War, near future, and a further time period in 2065. In particular, Black Ops 3 had a fully sci-fi focus - something which Black Ops 4 will dial back to better fit the series' recent desire for a more grounded feeling - in response to the negative feedback surrounding 2016's space-set Infinite Warfare.

Word of Black Ops 4 first appeared online this week in a Twitter post from self-styled "industry insider" Marcus Sellars. In a series of posts made over the past few days, Sellars also referenced a Nintendo Switch version of Black Ops 4 was in development - a detail we're still working to verify.

Sellars also posted word of the fellow Activision-published Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy - which Eurogamer sources have also said is on the cards.

Last year's Call of Duty: WW2 saw an uptick from 2016's disappointing sales of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, but franchise numbers remain far from their peak. Black Ops 1, released in 2010, remains the high watermark.

The last Call of Duty game for a Nintendo console was 2013's COD: Ghosts, which launched for Wii U.
“BLOPS on the ground” is a terrible subtitle.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Officially Announced

After weeks of rumors, a basketball tease, and lots of snickering about Roman numerals, today it’s finally official: Call of Duty Black Ops 4 (IIII) is coming this fall.

Publisher Activision did not reveal much more information than that, adding that it and developer Treyarch will share more details on May 17, with the game coming out October 12 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

This will be the first time in over a decade that the fall’s annual Call of Duty is coming in October rather than November. Perhaps related: Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2, which is likely to be this fall’s biggest game, will be out on October 26.

Despite earlier rumors, Activision did not say anything about a Switch release. When asked about that, the company declined to comment. There is, of course, a Nintendo Direct today at 5pm ET, so if the company does plan to release Black Ops IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII on Switch, it may be waiting for then.

Not sure exactly why there's a snobbery over IIII instead of IV. It's perfectly acceptable in Roman numerals.
Does everyone actually know that I totally coigned "CODBLOPS", I never get anywhere near enough credit for that.
It was probably one of those obvious things coined by many people independently.

For example my tweet is the first known usage of #ConDemNation to refer to the coalition, but I saw it used a lot later on. I don't think anyone stole it from me.
First Google Trends hit for CODBLOPS was four months after Lewie's post

That doesn't necessarily invalidate what I said though. Someone else could have thought of it without seeing Lewie's coinage.

It's the same phenomenon where comedians can create the same jokes without knowing of the original.
Oh, no, I didn't intend to suggest that it did (but it does read that way, accidentally.) I think you're most likely correct.
Well I mean it was literally within seconds of the announcement of the name that I tweeted it, then got people I know at PC Gamer, IGN, RPS, Eurogamer etc all using it.

Looks like they've taking inspiration from Overwatch and Siege.
What’s all this about it not having a single player/campaign? Is that confirmed or what?
Replace Call of Duty Black Ops IIIIIIIII with any game and it's still correct.

Its confirmed

https://www.polygon.com/2018/5/18/17366 ... r-campaign

Basically game will have

Normal BLOPS multiplayer
at launch 3 zombies maps (2 new / 1 classic) with a lot of customization and quest things built in and the option for bots
Some type of Battle Royal mode (details to come)
I’m all caught up now - so no campaign but you get a Battle Royale(c)(TM) instead. I’d rather they ditch Zombies rather than the campaign. Tch.

Mind you, at least on PS4 there’s currently not much in the way of BR games. And PUBG still isn’t feature complete on Xbox. So whereas you might roll your eyes at yet another BR game being announced there’s still hardly any of those types of games available on console.

Basically yes , I've pre-ordered from Amazon so i can get the beta - and I know I can just press a button and cancel the amazon pre order at no cost

I want to play the beta and thats the best way to make sure i get access to it.

Seems so, only single player option is Zombie mode with bots it seems.

The biggest and most popular BR game is already on PS4 and that's all that matters, I think. Nothing else will come close as they seem to have it seen up currently.

I don't think you can really pretend Fortnite doesn't exist.
Wait, did you mean Fortnite rather than PUBG?
He does cause PUBG isn’t on PS4 at the minute.

I should play Fortnight - it looks kinda groovy.
Cras wrote:

Obviously. PUBG isn't on PS4 and is struggling against the Fortnite juggernaut anyway.

Why aren't we playing it? You don't even need a Plus account I don't think.
I didn't much like it
I’m back off hols so I’m going to give it a whirl. It’s free so why not.

The most annoying thing was that we consistently had 5-8 people online wanting to play together, and it only supports 4, so we inevitably fucked off to play something else.

In game it is quite fun, but long stretches of boring and small flurries of confusing activity.

It's a BR game then. You either like it or you don't.

Well, no, it was okay, but didn’t have the chance to grow into it and get involved due to not being able to play with friends; unless 4 people is an absolute max for having in one game across the entire genre for the rest of all time.
Yeah it's annoying. We have five regular PUBG players so when all of us are available someone has to miss out.

Or Dave, because he's too nice.
I've played Fortnite.

It's alright. It seems really hard to actually kill someone though.

So it's a BR game then. :DD

So the season pass is announced and if you get the season pass you get another Zombies map on day 1 which is titled Classified

And the A in classified has a pentagon rather than the normal font so the speculation is that this will be a remake of the BLOPS1 map 'five' (set in the Pentagon)
Ran out ideas haven’t they? Tch.

Basically - and the other update from overnight is

https://support.activision.com/articles ... yStation-4

So if you pre-order BLOPS4 you get some classic maps now for BLOPS3 ....
Oh dear.

Quote:
Can I buy Black Ops Pass as a standalone product?
Black Ops Pass will be available as a standalone offering at a later date.
Will I be able to buy parts of Black Ops Pass content individually, like DLC Map Packs from previous Call of Duty games
No. The contents included in Black Ops Pass may only be purchased as a bundle.

So if you want to play any DLC you’ve got to pay for the £40 (sub price check) season pass or the £100 “special edition”.

And if the game doesn’t come with a ton of micro transactions I’ll be a monkey’s uncle.

What a shit show.
I'm just waiting for the next set of lootbox announcements and I'd much prefer to invest in Lootboxcoin instead !

(BLOPS3 / IW / WW2 all have lootboxes so I see no reason they wont have them in BLOPS4)
And no single player campaign either.

But hey at least you get some old maps to play in BLOPS3!
New Zombies trailer

And a new trailer for the next part of the original story

Anyone want a Beta code for this ?

Did anyone take this?

Has the beta closed yet? If not, what are the dates for it?

I’m interested because I’ve read comments that this leans more towards Rainbow Six: Siege/PUBG tactical gameplay and the TTK has been increased. Some people were just crying like babies about the TTK but every bit of footage I’ve seen looks like more of the same.
Tasty Tart Kumquats? Tangled Testy Kangaroos? Tingly Ticklish Knees?
Tip-Top Knitting. They've finally added realistic yarn manipulation physics but some people think it's OP.
