So I finished the second half of Bojack and thought it was pretty great and pulled all the right strings. Unfortunately I don’t think the finale smashed home its themes like I thought a Bojack season might. I would have been immensely satisfied had the season finished with the penultimate episode but the final episode just seemed ‘rushed’ for want of a better word. Most things were wrapped up but it felt like the finale could have been two episodes and have a more ponderous pace.
Just my own thoughts on what I’d have liked with the finale:

It wasn’t difficult to envisage a world where Bojack, once again, return to his previous ways at some point in the future. I felt that he needed to be shown bankrupt with his ties irrevocably cut to his friends, and having to move on from his past glories with, say, his body too damaged to be able to participate in the drugs and alcohol. It just felt to me like this character was so broken and had ruined so many lives that the end result should have been death or perpetual loneliness.
But I guess the moral was that life’s not always like that and lives don’t always have a bow tied around them except in fiction.
And then I watched Barrymore: Body in the Pool and, holy shit, it’s Bojack and Sarah Lynn. Honestly scary with the similarities in the story. Gave me goosebumps. If I’d have watched that and thought that Barrymore deserved redemption I’d have felt nauseous, so why should I feel differently about a fictional Horse. Weird night of TV that was.
