Changing the engine on anything takes it well beyond "hobby".
Long term hobby, chap - I'm going to use this as a method of learning about several things, including welding, with the help of Dad and Father In Law (Dad restores bikes and cars now, FiL used to modify and rebuild cars when he was younger and is now starting again with a restoration on a Herald). I was originally going to make one of those "Locost" Lotus 7 copies, but the scarcity of the old Ford Escort 1100 donor cars has struck that out.

I restored a mk1 MGB GT with my dad for my first car. My dad restored an MG Midget for my sister, he also restored an MG Roadster and dropped a Rover V8 into it, so I speak with a little bit of knowledge.
Don't restore an MG, they are shit.
If you care going to do anything like that, then build a locost or caterham or something. Choose something when it is done that actually is enjoyable to use
YMMV, of course, but dad and I both liked the MGB. Prefer the TR4a, of course...
