And people will be marrying animals, because animals are the same as humans and have the same statutory rights!

I don't even get what this is trying to say!
Socialism is for gays?
Gaywood and I just happened to walk past the gathering for one of the first gay weddings in England just now. The chaps will be married at midnight.

We clapped politely, like a good Englishman and his foreign friend.

:D
As a flagrant V flicked in the faces of our new gaily wed overlords, I shall be wedded to a member of the opposite sex in just 13 hours time.

I have yet to receive any kind of contractual offer from any major media outlet and am incensed.
Holy shit 12 not 13.

Heh.

That's gonna confuse people.

"You're getting STRAIGHT married? Today?"

So disrespectful man.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Congrats!
Congratulations!
Good luck, and congratulations!
As for gay marriage, it's legal and the world hasn't ended.

There was an old man sitting outside the police station this morning with a sign saying that the police and the CPS were 'pro-homosexuality and anti-Christian'. I walked on by.
Congratulations Bik, have a great day.

You should have stood next to him with a sign saying "... and proud of it"
The BBC said the church was still not doing gay weddings so what has been gained? A wedding ceremony at anywhere licensed other that a church?

Is that really that much better than a CP?

Clearly a hot topic as all party leaders have been tweeting all weekend, shame other government matters don't command the same attention !
It depends what church, I think. Some are "Yeah, come right in" others are like "We totally would, but the bosses say no" and some are "No, because we've got no real or cogent arguments as to why not since someone let slip that penguins get gay as fuck, and everyone loves penguins, so um, piss off?"

It isn't a case of, "what has been gained" in what the church does.
It is a case of what has been gained by law in a legal system that was treating gay people as unequal and undeserving of the same legal and marital status of heterosexual people.
So, a fucking lot has been gained.

Equality. You tit.
Still don't see what this delivers over the CP to be honest, I thought that addressed the bias on pensions and other things so that it was the same as a "marriage" between a man and a woman?

its not equality at all, the church and state recognise my marriage, this would not be a case for a gay couple
Luckily, it's only the state that has any legal relevance these days :)

I've posted about this in thread before but briefly: what has been gained, as others have rightly said, is equality. Before this, gay couples were classified differently by law. They could not say they were getting married, because they were actually getting 'civilly partnered'. People could say 'but you're not married are you, because you're gay and gay people can't get married'. They couldn't call each other husband, or wife. They weren't recognised as married partners in other countries that have already passed equal marriage.
They were told they were being the same, but different. That sentence right there was the basis of segregation in America. I know gay couples aren't being made to sit at the back of the bus, but they are subjected to abuse and discrimination, sometimes even from our national newspapers in recent years.
Changing the law to support equal marriage starts to normalise it. Now, gay couples can get married legally like a straight couple. Now, children are not brought up in a society where they see gay couples being treated as different by our own government. Now, if a transgender person got gender reassignment treatment with the full support of their married partner, they would not be forced to divorce.
This is a huge huge deal, and the fact that you don't see that shows that you are very lucky to have never been or never known anyone to have been affected by these laws.
Remember it is only in the last twenty years or so that gay people have been given the same rights in workplaces with anti discrimination laws and not much longer since gay people were allowed to have sex at the same age as straight people.
Hopefully, with equal marriage, we are on the way to a future where a gay person doesn't feel the need to come out almost every day of their life and gay people aren't verbally abused in the street for holding hands with their partner. How can gay people have equality in society when they don't have equality in the law?
Ta all. I'm married.

I'm also hung over as hell.

Anyway, sorry for oppressing gay marriage with my straight one, please re-take the spotlight.
Conga-rats to you and anyone else that got married today.

I'm pleasantly surprised by how much of a non-issue gay marriage is turning out to be for a big chunk of the population. Far from causing outrage it seems to be pretty widely accepted with anything from a shrug of the shoulders to genuine support and enthusiasm.
Congrats, Bik!

Yay! Congratulations Mr and Mrs Bik. :)
Congratulations Bik, I'm sure we'd all love to see a picture from your day and hope it all went wonderfully! :luv:
"Darling, do you mind if I put a photo of our wedding up on Beex? It's in the gay marriage thread."

Shortest honeymoon ever.
:DD

Congrats by the way, Bik. :)

Indeed. It's just the shit-stirring press and a few religious zealots who think it should be controversial.

I suppose the advent of civil partnerships wrung all the controversy out of the idea and it's just seen as an increment, albeit an important one as noted, of that. Which makes me wonder how it works for people who're already civilly partnered; do they just continue to be civilly partnered unless they book in for the 'upgrade' to marriage? And can you now actually still get civilly partnered or is that whole concept just replaced with marriage now?

Existing civil partnerships carry on as they were, but I don't think any new ones can be created. It's now marriage or nothing for everyone.
They're ongoing, but the government are holding a consultation on their future.

Actually not though - we're having a few days off work but no honeymoon. Which is good, because a coldsore appeared yesterday.
That's god punishing you for your tacit approval of gay marriage.

Congrats by the way.
It was my Parent's Golden Wedding anniversary over the weekend. It was such a lovely occasion - loads of old friends and 4 generations of family - that I didn't have the heart to tell them that is was all meaningless, due to those pesky Gays.
Its the same thing as when they remake a film and it literally goes back in time to ruin the original.
Man I hope no-one deliberately reads that the unintentionally offensive way to make trouble.

Good job myp has me on super-ignore.

It's amazing, like allowing everyone to marry regarding their sexuality somehow diminishes their own.

My neighbour just bought a Ferrari. It's made my Ferrari look really shit now. :(
My penis is defnitely smaller than it was on Friday.
Tearing up my marriage certificate tonight. Absolutely worthless now.
Pretty sure mine was worthless as soon as it was finished:

You were married in 2003?!

How old were you, twelve?
Wha? Geno? Amazed!

That's the bit you call out? Not the fact that it's in the name of Gazchap?
I might have a gay marriage next, see what all the fuss is about.
