Nintendo Switch RPG RMD
Reply
Looking for a game that will suck me in on the Switch that I spend a few hours playing in the evening without getting bored. I've got Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley which I love and I've played through a game about someone called Edith (forget what it was called) which was a walking simulator but still enjoyable.

What I'd really love is to be able to play GTAV on switch but that's not possible, so does anyone have any other good recommendations?
The Witcher 3 is out for the Switch if it's an engrossing RPG you're after. I haven't played it myself but it's very well regarded. It's also a very nice looking game though so if you're got access to a proper console to play stuff on then you might be better doing that than playing a Switch port.
Classic JRPG Xenoblade Chronicles Remastered will be out shortly. Or the sequel is already out.
Zelda BOTW if you haven't played it yet... but since you own a Switch, I imagine you already have.

Just looking at my games and there's Skyrim too. Also, Octopath traveller. I haven't played that myself yet but it's meant to be massive and ace!
It probably depends what you've already played on other systems and if you have memories of playing past games in some of the different series but a few quick suggestions

As already mentioned The Witcher 3 is on switch and so is Diablo 3 , and Sykrim if you've not played them to death on other systems.

Pokemon Lets Go is a remake of the first Pokemon game so if you've not played it before (or in a long time) its a classic , and Pokemon Sword / Shield is also one i found i could pop on and play a little while then turn it back off without missing anything

Southpark the fractured but whole was okay

Ni no Kuni normally gets a good write up (but another thats very much more expensive on the switch than anything else)

I have also bought the collection of Mana games but have not tried them yet

If your looking for a GTA itch to scratch I've often heard of Lego City Undercover described as a 'kiddy' version of GTA
I’ve played Skyrim, and I think I may even have played the first 30 odd hours twice or I might have gone for that.

I wasn’t sure what The Witcher is like and what it’s comparable to but that’s definitely an option. I’m not bothered about loss of graphical quality, ideally I want something that I can happily play handheld while Jen plays PS4 on the tv so we don’t need to be sat in different rooms!

The only JRPG I’ve ever played is FFVII, is it noticeably a different style of game from what I’m used to?

I’ve never played Zelda... should I?

Don’t know much at all about Diablo, is it recommended?

Very much yes! Breath of the Wild is the best game ever in my opinion.
Eh, BOTW looks great and is fun for the first 20 hours(!) or so, but I lost interest because it was so huge and sprawling and felt I hadn’t really got anywhere in that not-insignificant amount of time.
What about Saints Row, it looks like a couple of them are available but reviews seem mixed. I played the very first one way back when and I enjoyed it as a sort of absurdist GTA but are the later ones that are available on Switch any good?
I haven’t played past SR2 but from what I’ve seen they get sillier and sillier.
+1 for Zelda - its a great game - although I'd say its more an action game than an RPG - you do get different weapons and armour but you don't get the stats or leveling up in the same way - it also doesn't really funnel you in a specific way so you can sorta get lost which I did - i think I've done maybe 1/3 of it and just did not go back

I enjoyed Diablo but its old now - its *very* RPG with stats and numbers for everything although it does have a good story and i think keeps the game interesting - maybe watch a little bit of a lets play or a intro to it - it can get overwhelming a little at the start I played it on PC a long time ago and I'm playing through some of it again now on PS4
And i did not realize Saints Row 4 was on Switch - if your looking for a GTA type game then it fits the bill - just watch the first mission on Youtube - it will either sell you the game as the greatest thing ever or you'll never want to play it

Conversely, I enjoyed getting lost in the world and the huge sprawling nature of it.

As for the Saints Row games, you're spot on. They're GTA but more absurd. I enjoyed 2 and 3 but 4 overstayed it's welcome with me. Still, it's probably worth playing just for the first 15 minutes. It's got one of the most memorable openers of any game I've ever played.
If you’re the sort to get lost in a sprawling game and then ditch it, the key to enjoying BoTW is just to know:-

All you need to do is go right across the map after the opening bit.
Then you just need to visit the bosses in the four corners of the map.
Stop fucking about and crack on.
Witcher 3 is a great game. I played it on PS4 when it came out. Tempted to pick up the GotY edition now I’m watching the TV series.

You’d be in for a treat with Zelda too.

My advice is... go for the cheapest one :D

How long is it to play through if you rush, or if you really drag it out?
Well, we’re god knows how many hours into the modern warfare download and that’ll likely continue for the next few days so doesn’t look like I’m getting a new game anytime soon

Lord knows, I’m going to hazard a guess that I played around the 30-50 hour mark. I wasn’t rushing but I was largely focused on pursuing the four main boss areas because, well, that’s the job and the various temples got a bit dull and repetitive after a while (I did a fair few of them if I remember rightly though). You could drag it out as long as you liked cause there’s loads of collectibles to be collecting if you like collecting. I did not do much collecting.
Has anyone played metro something redux? It’s described as a survival horror, is it scary? For calibration, I can play The Last Of Us but not Resident Evil.
Uh oh, Assassins Creed exists on the switch! I’ve never played 4. I don’t think I played 3. I adored the one with Ezio.
I've played Metro on the Xbox One. I didn't like it... Thought it was very bleak.

Yeah, you never have any ammo and it isn't great.
Ok, I’ve ordered Assassins Creed IV. Hopefully that will be a good game that I can escape into for a couple of hours each evening once the kids are in bed. I have high hopes, Assassins Creed 2 was one of my favourites.

Did you play/enjoy other Zelda games, out of interest?

I’ve played a few and never finished one. Perhaps they’re just not for me.

Yeah, maybe.. different strokes and all that. :)
I was doing fine with it until I couldn’t complete a stealth level that was part of the story. It was on the run up to the first of the four bosses and failed it a number of times so went to a different area of the map to work on one of the others instead. And then I was stuck in a sandstorm and couldn’t see anything. Then I realised I wasn’t really enjoying it anymore.
That’s a shame. Looks like you were in the desert area in the bottom left of the map - you have to do the stealth mission before opening up the sandstorm boss anyway. You probably should have aimed for a different corner of the map altogether or even just used a guide to get you through the stealth to get to a more fun part.

Or play Link’s Awakening! ;)
I have been playing it! Not a lot, but a bit. It seems more manageable.
I definitely feel like Zelda is a massive missing part of my gaming education. I didn’t have any game systems when I was younger so the first time I got to properly play and choose games was when the PS1 came out. I’ve played some sonic and Mario at other people’s houses and I spent a lot of time on Goldeneye on the N64 at my cousins house but Zelda is definitely one that’s passed me by.
If you have the online stuff for the Switch then I'd suggest playing A Link to the Past which is on the SNES and included in their online stuff.

Because its 16bit tiles instead of 3d it has not aged in the same way and it has a solid story + a mainly linear path you follow - yes there are a few spots where you can go off and do other things but in general you follow the main story path till the end

If you dont have the switch online stuff then ask here and you can probably get added to a 'family' group (I have one via @gazchap)
I have switch online, but I’ve not played many of the retro titles. Might give that a look, thanks.

No.

Well, I completed it without getting bored, so Golf Story 1-0 Zelda so far.

I’ve completed them both and only got bored with Golf Story so 1-1.

So you’re saying it’s a tie. I’ll grudgingly accept

Actually... I’ve completed 5 Zelda’s and Golf Story and only got bored with Golf Story so 1-5.

Edit: 5 Zelda’s...
I said I’ll grudgingly accept. 1-1 final score.

You accept Golf Story is boring? Agreed.

It’s here! About a day earlier than if I’d tried to download it from the Nintendo shop last night. Shame I can’t play it tonight because I have a zoom game planned ?:|

It’s fun, has an interesting story, and a decent 16-bit game of golf. You obviously have no soul.
The highlights: not a bad game of golf. Like that Gameboy golf game - top down, arcade & simplistic but fun in short bursts.

Graphics: Pixel art *shudder* but serviceable
Music: teeth nashingly horrible. Tweet and cute in part but mainly just fudge ear grating. Too few instruments, repetitive, noticeable for all the wrong reasons.
Story: Far, Far, FAR too long. Mostly boring outside of playing the golf, often repetitive, some irritating design choices and running about for no reason, absolutely no pay off at the end, a bit about an ex wife who takes all your earnings who then never pops up again, no love interest for yourself, the coach’s love interest goes nowhere, but sometimes it’s quite humourous. The rap battle was alright but, again, took far too long. Hurt my thumb clicking through the dialogue.
Computer things: it lacks polish, the music sometimes cuts out to play another song and then comes back. Just minor irritations that I don’t expect to see in a game.

Overall: not worth your time.
It was wrong last time I read it, you didn’t need to copy paste it in here
It’s a nice summary of why it’s a load of old crap.

It’s a good job we use you as an opposite barometer or I’d worry people might not play it on your say so.
