Xbox Series X
New next Xbox not a Xbox One X
Reply
The Next Gen starts here with this lovely looking obelisk design or rather a vertical Xbox One X.

Hellblade 2 announced.

Microsoft suck balls at naming stuff
Not digging the vertical design, it's quite small though I suppose. Maybe it could go behind the telly. Except I don't think I'm getting one.
I’ll stick this ‘ere even though it’s normal Xbox because godDAYYUM it looks beautiful.

Some extra info, courtesy of this official Microsoft announcement:

Yes, the box can sit both vertically and horizontally

The controller is technically new. Microsoft say “Its size and shape have been refined to accommodate an even wider range of people, and it also features a new Share button to make capturing screenshots and game clips simple and an advanced d-pad derived from the Xbox Elite Series 2 Wireless Controller. The new Xbox Wireless Controller will be compatible with Xbox One and Windows 10 PCs, and will be included with every Xbox Series X.

It’ll support 60fps at 4K, “with possibility of up to 120FPS”, and will also support 8K visuals.

The Xbox Series X has a “next-generation SSD will virtually eliminate load times.”

It’s backwards compatible! Across all previous Xboxes! “Thanks to backward compatibility, you can expect your gaming legacy, thousands of your favorite games across four generations of gaming, all your Xbox One gaming accessories, and industry-leading services like Xbox Game Pass to be available when you power on your Xbox Series X in Holiday 2020.”

Sweet! So this summer then, I thought it would be near to christmas.
That Hellblade 2 trailer looks awesome! I loved the first game.

And yeah, I'm sort of excited about the new console... apart from the name.

Yep.
I think it's gorgeous. Kinda like a square Mac Pro. Hopefully the cooling will be good also.

It's deffo better looking than shots I've seen of the PS5 so far any way.

Hopefully Microsoft will make it more like a pc. Then again their front end is much better than Sony's.

Looking forward to this gen. Finally a nail in the coffin for pc gaming for me at least .
I wonder how the backwards compatible stuff will work? Will it be across the board or just on selected titles like we have now?

You haven't seen any shots of the PS5.

It's not confirmed, but for technical reasons, it's all but certain it'll be: across the board between Xbox One and Xbox Series X [1]. Meanwhile the Series X will inherit all the same Xbox/Xbox360 backwards compat the One has ie. selected titles only.

Is it Series Eks or Series Ten?

I think it's more like Microsoft is terrible at naming anything.

See: Vista, Windows 8.1, Windows Mixed Reality (Which doesn't do mixed reality)

Although they are pretty lumbered with the xbox name. The should just suck it up and either come up with a new name, or stick with numbered generations. Xbox > Xbox 360 > Xbox One > Xbox 2 etc. I know that they don't want to be seen as being behind Sony in numbers. If that's a problem, call the new one the Xbox 10. Everything else is stuck on 10 anyway. Looking at you Apple.

FUN FACT: The name Xbox was a lazy hop from DirectX Box, which was what the early protypes were referred to as.

Actually, it's like with kings, so it's "Xbox the Tenth."

I don't understand the magic behind backwards compatibility but this makes sense to me. Shame that they can't make everything backwards compatible though. Imagine a brand new console that's compatible with every single Xbox game ever. That would be a massive selling point if you ask me.

I've seen the dev kit that's purposely designed to look like a V.

It's not terribly pretty.

Looks won't decide this for me any way. The Xbox has a far superior OS. The ps one looks terribly dated and is missing so many apps I can't use my non pro as a serious media unit either. Maybe Sony can sort that out. I expect much more than a gaming device from the next gen.

Though if course ideally I'd like both but I don't think that will be an option.

Xbox the Unready.
They should just remove all the non-X letters, leaving XXX and resulting in some interesting search results for 'xxx games' or 'xxx videos'.

So in other words

So that's not s PS5 then?

What I mean is, are you certain that's not the final design and has Sony confirmed otherwise?

It looks pretty finished to me is all.
That trailer is incredibly effective. Love it.

What's the voiceover from?

I’d say to most consumers it wouldn’t matter. You’re very much an edge case.

I'm not sure but it's really cool. I like this teaser so far. Very classy and grown up.

Alan Watts apparently

https://genius.com/Nuages-dreams-annotated
I went through a huge Watts phase back in my early twenties. I remember thinking his "Cloud hidden; whereabouts unknown" to be some of the most deep shit I'd ever read. Then I realized he was writing for a Californian stoner audience and that lowered it in my estimation.

The last PlayStation dev kit (non handheld) to look like the actual console was the ps1 (and I'm not 100% sure that did) . The tool looked like a mutant ps2, but since then not at all.
JohnCoffey wrote:

The V design is so the units can be stacked when devs are running stress tests on multiple units at the same time; the home version will absolutely not look like that. The dev kits for the last two PlayStations looked nothing like the eventual home consoles.
OK maybe I should explain it as neuro typically as I can.

That PS5 Dev kit is obviously a PS5. Whether or not it'll look like that? No one knows. I hope not, but then I don't really care so long as it's good.

However, quite a few times things that were supposed to be prototypes did actually turn into the final product.

It looks more like a finished console to me than a dev kit. Like, dev kit usually looks hideous with no design at all. Just a beige box. This looks like an actual design. It even has the Sony logo etc on it.

I hope I'm wrong but time will tell. Just seems like a waste of money putting so much thought into a dev box and making it look like an actual product. That must have taken time and money and then you have to basically design a new PCB, new shell, new cooling etc. Just seems like a waste of money to me *shrug*
JohnCoffey wrote:

Well yes, that's the point. You can't compare the look of the release model of the Xbox with the dev kit model of the PS.
The Xbox Series X is not called the Xbox Series X well it is the Xbox Series X but rather it’s called the Xbox not The Xbox just Xbox starting with the Xbox Series X.

Fucking hell.

They should call it the Xbox2020. Gives them a clean break and no issues with looking like you're lagging behind the Playstation5.

Though, arguably, your Xbox2020 in 2024 may feel a bit longer in the tooth.

Also, you become the EA Sports of consoles.

Not sure that makes much sense. Shouldn't it be "Xbox Series X, starting with Xbox"?

They certainly like to challenge their SEO team.
I just refer to it as the Xbox Sex.

It looks like if you lay it on its side it's about the same footprint as a One X but double the thickness. Not very small.
Are we getting this, or the ps5?
JohnCoffey wrote:

That's just overcompensating for "Micro" "soft".

After this gen MS would need to really go some to get my money ever again. I doubt they'll bollocks up the early hardware again like they did this time (which they did sort of redeem with the One X) but there has just been fuck all in the way of exclusive games I care about; whereas there was loads of stuff on the Sony side. Obviously they could change that, but they'd need to build a decent sized library before it was worth shelling out (given that I'd already have a PS5, Switch and capable PC) and that would take a while. Plus, they don't seem to understand the value of it given the nonsense they've put out in the last few years.

Obviously Sony could throw it all away by making some fucking boneheaded decisions with the PS5, but I reckon they understand that success came this time from just making a capable games machine without any nonsense going on so I'd be very surprised if they deviated from that.
All else being equal, I slightly prefer Xbox controllers to Playstation ones.
