You have to feed and hydrate your character in Spelunky or it dies?

Oh right, no. Is that what you mean by survival elements then?

Yeah, what did you mean?

Staying alive because of permadeath.
The Xbox are doing their year in review and along the way, with all your stats, you collect pieces that go towards a snow globe. It's quite neat!
Xbox One January Games with Gold:

Celeste (Jan 1-31) - Bloody brilliant this. Lovely and difficult.
WRC 6 (Jan 16-Feb 15) - Go fuck yourselves.

Xbox 360 (compatible with Xbox One)
Lara Croft: Guardian of Light (Jan 1-15) - Alright.
Far Cry 2 (Jan 16-31) - Actually, I’ve never played this and quite fancy a dabble.

Is the XBLA version backwards compatible?

I don't believe it is.

Super Bomber man R may be the way to go here. This is the one we played at the Cottage.

Sweet. I'll have that one. Ta, bud
Digging through the windows store has reminded me that I can install and play Forza onmy typewriter! Awesomeness.
It runs really well on my modestly specced PC at 1080p. Syncs the game with the Xbox too. This is how gaming should work.

I've also gone for Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, AKA that crazy neon co-op game that peeps were playing on the switch at the cottage.

It’s great. Maybe a bit hard for kids though.

We finished this a four player co-op machine last night. It was admittedly on Beginner level, but we had great fun.
Free during the month of February:
XBO: Super Bomberman R
XBO: Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon - MUTHAFUCKA!!!
360/BC: Assassin’s Creed Rogue
360/BC: Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
Super Bonberman R - Ace!
Bloodstained - I’d never heard of this but just from the box art I thought it was a pixel art Castlevania type game. I was right.
Assassins Creed - I reckon I’ve got all the Assassins creed games through games with gold and I’m yet to play a single one of them. Stop giving us them!
Star Wars - This is probably good. I’ve probably already got it. I probably won’t play it.
Fucks sake. Just paid for bomberman
The Curse of the games with gold... You can sometimes tell when games are destined to be given away free, I never expected Bomberman however.
The Xbox gets some crap too:

Why are XBox download speeds so bad? I've got Apex Legends downloading and it's all over the place, in a range from 'shit' to 'really shit'. Our internet is 100Mb/s and Steam will max this out no problem, but XBox can be anything from 5Mb/s to about 40-50Mb/s at the upper end. I've certainly never seen it max the connection out for any appreciable amount of time.

Mind you, Playstation downloads often aren't much better.

Wank!

Is this wireless? Mine is great but it is wired.
I had to plug my PS4 in, as Battlefield complained about latency constantly on wireless.

Wired, I don't like wireless. Wireless is for girls and iPads.

Everything that's hard-wired is on gigabit Ethernet, which means speeds of 100MB/s+ on file copies and suchlike on the LAN, but of course the limiting factor for the internet is 100Mb/s down and 11Mb/s up.

Steam will merrily max it out on any PC in the house, the Battle.net client usually does, Origin will, etc etc. It's just XBox and Playstation downloads that tend to be a bit shit.
Steam sucks a rotten dick at feeding me downloads, weird. Doesn't even get close to a quarter of my downstream, which is only like 70Mb.
Huh, Steam hits 20MB for me. That's odd.
Steam goes like a train for me, but only in bursts. MAX OUT - trickle - MAX OUT - trickle etc...

Xbox usually holds steady at about 75% of my max speed (about 27meg, I need to go back to Virgin)
Just out of curiosity, I've just checked my current broadband speed and the tester reckons I'm at 15meg upload and FIVE MEG DOWNLOAD. I feel a conversation with BT is imminent.

:hat:
Using a combination of Teamviewer, VPN and Parsec, I am able to play on my xbox from work.

The latency is pretty bad, but slower paced games are fine. Not that I'll ever get a chance to play anything, of course.
You’ll be needing THE XCLOUD, then!
TLDW: it’s a streaming service.

Next month on Games with Gold. A big pile of yawn.

Here's the games.

I agree with Sat... pretty much uninspiring apart from Star Wars Battlefront 2. This is an ace game and almost makes up for the other 3.
They normally charge ten bucks for an OG Xbox game? Sheesh.

Nintendo are currently charging over six quid for the fucking original Donkey Kong game and Sony are asking for £8 for the first Metal Gear Solid game. Companies are assholes and nostalgia huffing idiots are easy marks.
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2 is brilliant. It was the second ever online multiplayer game I ever played*! I bloody loved it immensely**. It had a hardcore mode before CoD with one shot kills throughout.

If the multiplayer still works next month I’ll be putting some hours in.

*The first was FEAR.
** And the campaign was really good, as far as my brain remembers.
I had a go at that Stars Wars: Republic Commando from last month. The OG Xbox freebie? Hey, it’s pretty good!

If you ain’t knowing, you control a team of Stormtroopers (or some shit) and shoot people in a range of missions. You play one of the stormtroopers or clones (or whatever the fuck) and have basic command of three of the stormtroopers or republicans (or some bollocks) but much less than, say, the Conflict: Desert Storm series. It’s kinda fun in a sort of non-taxing way assuming you can ignore the washed out textures and stuff of the OG days.

So yeah... stormtroopers and shit init
I played it back in the day. I quite liked it until I got stuck at some point. Can’t remember why.
Time to stack some subs from cdkeys.

Though suspiciously they're quite a lot higher than last time I bought one at 33.99 (or 34.99 for the same thing in a different listing, for some reason)
Games with Gold for May.
Having given the first Golf Club game a go and then buying the sequel, it looks like I'll be trying out that 2019 version next. Once I've conceded defeat to bloody Trials Rising anyway.
I don't mind a round of video game golf actually so, as long as it's not too complicated, I think I may be giving this one a go too.

It’s golf, how bloody complicated can it be?

See ball, hit ball. Simple, easy to understand.

You should’ve tried one of the later EA efforts.
I wish they'd do a console version of 'Golf With Your Friends' or 'Golf It!'

:this: I had one of them on Gamepass... I couldn't get into it at all.
Yeah I bought one of them for my XBox 360.

/checks 360 games collection.

Tiger Woods PGA Tour '09 apparently, couldn't get comfortable with the thing at all, gave up after a couple of hours in the end, the control system was the most dismally fiddly streak of pissy bollcks it's ever been my misfortune to interact with. Looked nice though.

There's a real craft to making a golf game simple enough, but also engaging and challenging enough, to please the keen videogame golf player.

Everybody's Golf on PS4 is one of the best I've played for years, but I'm still quite partial to a round of Neo Turf Masters in MAME.
