Tabletop wargaming - nerdlinging to the max...
and other sundry models

Do you play tabletop wargames?
No, of course not. Tabletop wargamers are so nerdy they make PC fanboys look cool and studly.  34%  [ 25 ]
Yes. I love my little painted figures. I give them all names and stroke them every night. I live for weapons damage charts.  5%  [ 4 ]

This may be a stupid question (most of my questions are) but are there such a thing as ‘cute’ characters?
Maybe Gloomspites?

They’re like Slimers with teeth. They’re definitely cuter, though not quite Sylvanian Families :D

Nurglings are cute.
Have a poke around etsy. There's lots more than warhammer stuff on there.

You can even buy a Zardoz from the 90s.

Heh!

Like the chonky dragon, too!
Someone should make ones you could 3D print and paint.
Most of the Etsy models are 3D printed. There's some amazing stuff on there by LordofThePrint which I'm slowly building a collection of. Currently assembling these.

Edit: of course all this relies on a high quality printy person. I'd recommend these guys: Phalanx Printing
Ah, I don’t know anything about 3D printing, I just wondered if it was something that could be done. I thought maybe Zardoz had a 3D printer once.

I was reading about people who painted miniatures a while ago, and it said that some people paint with black, then dry brush with grey, then again on the very outer areas with white to set all the shadows, then use a transparent pigment to paint the colours on to help show the detail. That sounded really clever.
I did have one but nowhere near the resolution you’d need for those detailed models.

Yep, Zenithal highlighting. It can work wonders with some models, but I find using black as the darkest shade too.... black. Very much easier with an airbrush.

Ah, I didn’t even realise that they came in different ‘resolutions’ but it makes sense.

Makes sense! I thought it might be something to try with a broken plaster picture frame I have that has some relief work. Or the dodo lamp :D

I've got an Elegoo Mars 3 resin printer and that can do some funky stuff as long as you don't mind waiting 18 hours or so.

Have some terrible photos:

So with the higher resolution do you avoid all of those slight ridges that are (I guess) caused by the layers of filament?

I saw someone making a chess set with a 3D printer on YT and they flashed the finished pieces with a blow torch or heat gun (can’t remember which) to smooth them, but I guess that would ruin the high resolution. Even with the somewhat basic shapes he was using I think they looked a bit ‘melty’.
Resin printers are a little different, they print "upside down" by dipping the print into the magic fluid and using a UV led screen to make the resin go hard in specific places. There are rough edges if you use a magnifying glass (or have far better eyesight than me) but heating it up would kill any details like you said, so better suited for big smooth things, like the chess pieces there.
Oh my goodness, I’ve just watched a short video on YouTube and that’s amazing. I’ve never even heard of a resin printer before. :mindblown:

I’m familiar with resin usage with UV light to cure it on a very basic level, but it’s amazing that it can produce fine detail through dipping and curing tiny areas. I’m super impressed by that. What do you use it for? Is it for something in particular or just for fun things?
I printed out a replacement "shelf plug" for an IKEA cabinet the other day, does that count?
You should do some Judge Dredd style badges!

As fun stuff? No.

One of my favourite things people do with 3D printers is to fabricate little situation-specific home improvement projects. A little clip that holds tiny yeast packets inside a kitchen cabinet, or something that makes a light pull more easily reachable from a door entrance. Small things that wouldn’t be manufactured in mass, but help make things more accessible.
Right, finally finished off the second half of the box. I quite like the bomb collar dudes. Will paint ten red, ten blue, Oxford comma, and ten orange.

Got a dreadnought to build next, and will paint them all. Deadline is 9th June when the AdMech invade and 1,422 points of blood angels (and agents of the imperium) will defeat them.

Here's some rules that is deffo not a game where you kill people in teams.

Wow. Johnny 5 has been on the protein shakes.
There's the lads, ready to go
Solid work, mate!
Have you actually bought, built and painted an army… without 2 to 3 times as many other models still in boxes, half built and/or painted?
The four gold ones are the conduits to the Emperor, yes?

I've got twenty unpainted baseline humans. Half are primed. I think I will do ten blue and ten orange and have a kill team set up or something with them.

The sanguinary Guard are two thirds done (I need some more OOO brushes but forgot to go to the shop yesterday). I've done the wings red but they look like parakeets now, so might redo them.

I might add a second squad of Intercessors and a tank at some point.

Thank you.

I have some off white paint to mix with the red so might do some highlights now!

Oh god yes.

The kid is going to murder me when she finds out I have ruined her birthday cake decorations.
The Blood Angels fought hard against Adeptus Mechanics before the entire site was nuked from orbit when MrsA said it was dinner time.

As you can see from below their deployment was Massively Defensive and the scouts got stuck in right away managing to wipe off two units of suspected heretics. Jeff the Death Company Dreadnought stared down a tank before literally half the AdMech army shot at him and he died before even getting into charge range. However, the death company themselves jetpacked in and smashed it to death with hammers, and then it exploded, killing half of them

40k can be fun, but it takes bastard forever.
What's got ten legs and fucking hates heresey?

Assault terminators.

Quick bath and they'll be dressed in the proper colour.

Also that shelf needs dusting.
I don't think there's a single strategic or tactical problem I can't solve with "more hammers"
Good ratio of MORE LIGHTNING CLAWS.
Ooooh, I am a £20 model away from 2k point Blood Angels army.
Here's the gang, only 7 need painting, and some need finishing.
Just say that the 7 unpainted ones are ghosts.

Or use them to make where someone was when they started sprinting.
Did you get your £20er?
Zardoz wrote:

Yeah, then they changed the points a few days later so I got another dread.

So that is 2k points there.
There we go. A few need a touch up here and there but I got me some tank killing infantry (front left hand side) to deal with the GIANT WALKING ROBOTS (Armigers) my mate got.

Bit of a rejig and it does 2k points still.
How much did that cost?
Look over there! A three headed monkey!
I've been in an Orky mood lately so take this shittyly littedey bad phone photo cos I can't be arsed to get all my photo shit out. Name's Bruise Pain.
Of course now the photo has shown a billion things wrong that I need to fix or improve. Bah.
Oh is that a printed miniature?
