Tabletop wargaming - nerdlinging to the max...
and other sundry models

Do you play tabletop wargames?
No, of course not. Tabletop wargamers are so nerdy they make PC fanboys look cool and studly.  34%  [ 25 ]
Yes. I love my little painted figures. I give them all names and stroke them every night. I live for weapons damage charts.  5%  [ 4 ]

I've just started reading the books with him in, so I get your joke :)
Dear Lord this thread has given me some flashbacks.

When playing WH40k, do/did people get arsey about the models having the correct weapons and being a coherent unit using the 'right' weapons, or like me were they more laissez-faire and arrayed his marines/eldar with absurd weapons that bore no resemblence to the ones the miniature was actually holding?
I was fairly lax. Me and my cousin started out playing with cardboard counters with 'marine bolter' or 'marine rocket launcher' written on it.

I'd want (for example) the heavy weapons guy in a tactical squad to be the model carrying a heavy weapon of some kind, just so you can tell who to shoot at - but that's about as far as I went.

I tried as far as possible to do that, but sometimes I'd equip two guys in the squad with plasma guns, one with a shurkien catapult and one with a bolter... normally I'd just write on my army list who had what, and happily point it out to the other player(s) should they ask. I think once someone got upset and I made up a ludicrously convoluted backstory about how they came by the weapons after a previous battle in which they torched some orks and eldar...
Did anyone play Warhammer Siege? I think I can pinpoint the decline of my interest in all things GW to the day my parents refused point blank to buy me a 'plastic fort' for my 15th birthday. They had a point.
Apart from the painting and building aspects of tabletop wargaming which I enjoyed lots, a computer does all the other stuff far, far better. It's quicker, no falling out over rules, accuracy and most importantly no greasy spotty dweebs (apart from yourself).

I tried as far as possible, with actual proper miniatures, however we used all sorts of random stuff to represent miniatures we didn't have. My favourite: Lego knights blu-tacced to a cavalry slottabase as a representation of Rough Riders.

Oh, absolutely - unfortunately there isn't a decent game out there that lets you assemble hugely customisable armies from lists and then fight with them. You can shove your 'building units' up your arse. Metaphorically. Or not, whatever.

TBS in teh BIG MAP and RTS in the 'let's have a fight now!'

So, rubbish suggestion all round, really.

In the grim far future of the 41st Millennium, there is only LEGO

It can be played as a TBS with judicious use of the pause button. This is how I play it, at least.
When TBS was first mentioned in the thread I assumed it stood for Total Bull Shit.

What does it stand for?
Turn based, sorry duh.
Zardoz wrote:

I have no idea whether it is a 'used' phrase or not, but since I knew what RTS stood for, I made a guess that it was the other option.

:)
Total Bull Shit is better though.

Had a snoop around the Golden Demon award winners pages on the Games Workshop site, some great stuff on there. I'm holding fast though, not buying anything, nope, not me.
*wheeze, stagger*
joiiiin ussssssss... joiiiiinnnn usssssss Zarrrrrdooozzzz...
My Nurgle Daemon Prince arrived today. I am filing lead.
Can I watch you paint it Live over XBORXVIZION?

I promise to keep my hands on the table.
I'll be like an upside down Bob Ross.
You mean a bald ginger Bob Ross.

Hmmm:

Or an Xbox 360?
Get a 360 and then when you tire of it, break it apart and build the model in the pic.

Definitely the Titan.
Oh for fuck's sake they're releasing edition 5 of the 40k rules. They only just released edition 4. This is one of the things I hate about these bastards. This will mean that all codexes and, say, the Forgeworld armour books (costing 200 each or something) will now be redundant and will need replacing. The greedy, greedy cunts.
Funny, I'm just about to leave the house to go to Merry Hill and purchase a 60mm base. I have to actually go into one of the shops.. *shudders*
I'm inevitably going to be scouring ebay and buying up imperial guard and tau, after this thread, I'm sure. And then finding a person to play against in the area.

In the meantime I'm going to pick up all my unpainted marines from my parents' place and have fun painting them up. I have some very nice chaos terminators awaiting a lick of paint.... hmm.

Oooh - just been taking another look at the forgeworld site - the Imperial Guard Death Korps of Krieg look fantastic.

Hmmm. Who needs savings, eh?
Just bought a Plague Marine conversion set from ForgeWorld... gods help me.
Are there no photos of your work, chap?

As far as I know, all the current codexes are largely compatible. So are the armour books. Though apparently flyers work differently now, so there will be updates to those eventually. This is after talking to the lovely people at my local store.
I don't understand, why do you need to buy the new books? Can't you just go - "I'll stick with book four, thanks?" and agree with your mates to do the same?
Just got back from buying some Nurglings and some spare bases, blimey the one bloke in the Merry Hill branch was pushy. Kept wanting me to spend on the vehicles and actually play the fucking games.

Duh... Nerds!

That's like a computer geek sticking with a Pentium II 'Because all I do is browse the web'. The new rules are obviously better!

Seriously: Absolutely nothing. Though I'm guessing the hardcore will buy the new book anyway.

Bearing in mind that Sunday is Beginner's Day, then yeah, they're going to try to get you to play the games. That's how they get new hive-dron.... customers.
That may explain the hordes of tiny children pushing to get past me. I was also surprised at the sheer lack of.. stuff.. on the shelves. 4 sporks of Chaos with 5 blisters on each. TUT.

The forgeworld books have rules in? Mine are just porn.
ah, shit. I appear to have bought some Space Marine Scouts and a Tau Crisis Battlesuit. Bastard.
I've got 30 chaos space marines sitting unassembled by my feet. How on earth did they get there?
Bloody Games Workshop, and it's mass hypnosis techniques.

Tha Rulez wrote:
Deep Strike: In the right circumstances Chaos Terminators can teleport into battle, appearing almost anywhere on the battlefield. To represent this they may set up using the Deep Strike rules, but only if the mission does not allow troops to use the Deep Strike rules then the Terminators must set up normally with the rest of the army.

There you go. Presumably something went slightly wrong, given that they've arrived separately to their limbs.
