Are we playing this tonight? I'm gonna join the Forza car club for some racing fun for a few hours I think, but if people are still on after that I'll be down for some games!
I'll be on from about half seven til half ten :)
I'll be on from around 8:30 till around 11:30
I don't have this.
Bigest day 1 sales of any game ?

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011- ... in-history

Quote:
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 day-one shipments are the largest for any game ever, Activision has said.

"The record number of pre-orders from Modern Warfare 3 drove the largest day-one shipments in our history, and in the industry's history," said Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg during an earnings call last night (transcript on Seeking Alpha).

Modern Warfare 3 launched worldwide yesterday, but no sales figures have yet been released.

Hirshberg said more than 1.5 million people queued at 13,000 shops at midnight on Monday to buy Modern Warfare 3, "making it the largest retail release in Activision's history and in the industry's history".

Major UK game outlets told Eurogamer earlier this week that Modern Warfare 3 had been their most pre-ordered title ever.

Popularity for Call of Duty has extended to multiplayer social network and stat-tracking application Call of Duty: Elite.

"We've already had an incredible response to Call of Duty: Elite from the moment it went live," said Hirshberg, who has nothing to do with Hershey's.

"Player registration requests for our new live services have exceeded even our most optimistic expectations, which have created some bottlenecks in the registration process.

"We've already registered over 1 million players, and we've been working round-the-clock to increase registration capacity as quickly as possible.

"Keep in mind," he added, "these issues have no impact on players' ability to play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3."

Eurogamer's Modern Warfare 3 review awarded 8/10.

"Its exuberant blend of testicular bravado and blockbuster gloss ensures that Call of Duty retains its crown as the shooter genre's biggest, boldest rollercoaster ride for at least one more year," wrote reviewer Dan Whitehead.

BTW elite isnt working for me at the moment it keeps telling me that i've not played any games of this .... and that i've not played any games of BLOPS :-)
Come on... we know you hated BLOPS Zaphod!
Myp - if you prefer games where you run around and don't kill anyone then just play Mirror's Edge!
Killstreaks list : http://www.themodernwarfare3.com/mw3/ki ... -packages/

Curio your 'escort dropship' should have been

Quote:
Escort Airdrop (18 kills)
Escort Airdrop

An AI controlled version of the Osprey Gunner killstreak. It drops Care Packages and also defends them.

The gunner on the other side is

Quote:
Osprey Gunner (17 kills)
Osprey Gunner

Be the gunner of an Osprey that drops Care Packages. It's pretty similar to the Chopper Gunner from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

And the weird thing i unlocked was

Quote:
TROPHY SYSTEM

Once deployed, it deflects explosives, e.g., missiles that are launched at its direction.

Gilly the 'ninja' perk to stop your footsteps is dead silence

Quote:
Dead Silence / Dead Silence Pro
Dead Silence

Makes you silent and also reduces the effect of the Recon perk.

Pro Ability: You don't take any damage from falling.

I also see theres a strange one which would allow you to have shotguns as your secondary (2 of any other gun)

Quote:
Overkill / Overkill Pro
Overkill

Allows you to carry two primary weapons, but the second primary weapon can't be equipped with attachments.

Pro Ability: Your second primary weapon can now be equipped with attachments.
It's about time they bought Ovverkill back: assault + sniper
= sexy time.
I wound up playing a few Mosh Pit games on my own after Forza. That's what I like about CoD - you can play multiplayer alone and still have plenty fun. Will be up for some Bezzie shooting tomorrow though. Although I might continue the campaign...
Did some campaign last night. It is hilarious. In a good way.
I think I really don't like most of the maps - claustrophobic spaghetti and some of them a little small. In Free for all you get shot in the back as you are shooting far to much. I also think spawn points are an issue due to this roundabout layout.

I feel they are trying to keep you moving rather than stopping and checking fire arcs in cover, (count to 3) at each arc then your 6, before moving on. Combine this with the amount of turns in a level and you are going to be constantly flanked and taken from the rear.

Claymores look dumbed down (I like to watch my back)- yet I have to get these to pass proper comment yet. Basiclly the Stalker perk lets you run through them - Pro perks are too easy to acquire.

This is SMG run and gun country - where are the middle distance maps with avenues of fire? Invasion, Downpoor, karachi, Sub Base etc??

Hell I've seen a lot of snipers using ACOG - the distances are too short and I have not seen one map yet in which I need a ACOG on an assault rifle???

Also in looks like at higher levels you can have bigger quicker knife skills and more powerful shotguns. Not sure they have solved the problems from MW2 just temporally hidden them.
I thought that about the maps at first as well. Have you played them all? I discovered a few that were good for sniping eventually. But I do agree that generally they're total run and gun fests. You're constantly being attacked from all angles, which can be annoying.
Not all yet -I have hopes for Bakaara? (The one with the dead Blackhawk)

Every weapon (that i've seen) has a 'melee' add on which increases melee power and of course the handguns have Tac knife for a quicker 'reload'

For the shotguns I was thinking it might be the range add on (which i found was very useful on an SMG)

Oh and I have just tried overkill with a riot shield as primary and a shotgun as my secondary so riot shield to annoy them then switch to shotty and kill them (shotty as secondary right now so its useful with no attachments - as you need kills with that secondary to open up pro)
I'm still undecided on my perk setup. They've annoyingly put all of my favourites in one category and filled the other two with rubbish ones I don't care about. I want Scavenger and Marathon (or whatever it's called now)! I hate running out of ammo, but I also hate not being able to run for very long. Having said that, the Marathon one now only allows you to run twice as far rather than forever.
I'm not loving the maps so far, though I'm sure they will improve with a little more play time.

There have been parts of the single player campaign that seem much more suited to good multiplayer than the ones they've chosen. That'll be the DLC then....
I like crowded maps. Big open areas where you're just at the mercy of snipers isn't the most fun ever.

The better ones have always had a mixture of tight and open spaces, and if you get the sight lines right they don't allow one type of player to dominate. At the moment it just seems to heavily geared to knife and quick scope players. That's something that BF3 definitely did better, as there's no way that you should be able to stab someone from the front and kill them when they are shooting you in the throat with an M16

Stabbing in BF3 is only a one-kit hill if you do it from behind, which means if your opponent is shooting at you as you try to stab, you will invariably die first. From behind you get a nice animation akin to the Halo Reach executions.

I'm still playing around a bit with mine , they have spread them out quite well so you do hit new stuff on a fairly regular basis - it would be nice to get into Elite and check / play around with things online but it still seems to be broken :-(

WTB wrote:

Actually they've ommited the ones i want - i *want* a way to keep sprinting and yet that doesnt exist , I want a way to be invisible to the enemy on the mini map (which I think i can get with blind eye and assassin but i'm not sure yet)

WTB wrote:

Very suprised that Scavenger is as far away - however the answer is simply to max out the gun and get extended mags (I hit that before i got to Scavenger so didnt really 'need' it any more) - and Marathon is "Exterme Conditioning" however its just 2 or 3 times your normal sprint time its not 'all the time' which i'm a little disapointed in I liked having a way to keep moving quickly.
I love this game, even more than I thought I would. Maps are great (and I rarely get knife kills and never quick scope) perks are great, guns are great, game modes are great... I can't wait ti get home and play more.
I had a couple of hours of the special ops section today and thoroughly enjoyed it, both online with randoms or split screen.
I'm not sure how much longevity there will be, but I much prefer it to the Zombies in BLOPS.
Well, I have played the MP for a bit and am disappoint. I don't mind "more of the same", I quite liked MW2. However, this suffers from exactly the same errors that CoD4-7 had on release day; that is poor. The fact quick sniping still exists on this game, after it didn't on the previous game* is fucking embarrassing and IW, SH and Activision should be fucking ashamed with themselves.

*don't give me any of that different developers bullshit.

You were doing Zombies wrong then :-)

(okay I was the only one on here that really loved Zombies , but i would happily swap all the spec ops stuff for MORE ZOMBIES !)

That's not entirely out of the question. It just didn't click for me, either in WaW or BLOPS so I carried on with the standard multiplayer.
Gotta say, being able to hear the whines of your last victim is very satisfying. Especially in Search and Destroy when you kill the last person and everyone can hear his last words as "fuck sticks".
The girlfriend just came up to me and asked "Is it COD time yet?" apparently we have to get a copy. Anyone know the cheapest place I can buy it online?

EDIT: Needed M$ bucks so got it from asda with the £25 with points deal. Feel a little dirty.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
what if she hogs the xbox during Dark Souls time?

You mean Tesco , Asda just have the game for £38
'ey Bobby, quick scoping is deliberately in there. People wanted it back so they put it in.

I have went back and tried Zombies in WaW and its not as good but it did all click for me in BLOPS (i didn't really play it at all for a very long time and couldn't get the point of things but once you understand what your doing , what goals your building towards and get a decent team with you its great(*).

(*) Gears or Halo multiplayer has never clicked for me either - this is the first one that did that had a team working against the computer rather than playing against another team
Oh and by the way, I played some more maps tonight for the first time. 'Seatown' is excellent. I've also really took a shine to Kaaraka or whatever it's called. With the downed chopper in the middle. Reminiscent of Crash from 4.

At this point I respectfully disagree with anyone who thinks the maps are shit. There are at least six genuinely great maps, some good ones and some alright ones. One or two are rubbish, but you get 16 so those are pretty good numbers. There are at least four or five maps with good long lines of sight ideal for sniping and slightly slower paced games.

As ever, it's a combination of not knowing the maps at all combined with the couple that really actually are a bit shit that puts you off at first, but after five hours or so, it becomes clear that this CoD has plenty of maps to rival any of the previous games.

Rubbish, they were just being incredibly lazy and couldn't be bothered messing with the game mechanics. It is really bad as well, I have no problem with random fire no scoping, but the quick scoping is utter bollocks. It is way worse on this than MW2 as well.

It might well be something they tweak , so far the most obvious thing for that i've seen is that the knive seems to be toned down quite a bit (i have not unlocked the tac knife / melee combo so cant comment on that) - if you turn a corner and someone is almost running into you in BLOPS or MW2 whoever hit the knife button first won , i've been in that situation hit knife and been shot by a shotgun or an SMG (this might be down to lag but its happened a few times so i think they have nerfed the knife slightly)

Oh and since Elite is still buggered they have announced that they will extend the period you can buy it and still get 'founder' status to the end of the month and an 'extra month' (so what?) if you have already bought it

http://www.1up.com/news/call-of-duty-el ... free-month

Quote:
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's launch has gone smooth in terms of online multiplayer stability -- players can play without experiencing any widespread issues like those faced by Battlefield 3 players following its launch.

What has not been working quite so well is the new Call of Duty Elite service. Users have been experiencing issues registering, logging in, accessing stats, and so on because Beachhead has had "trouble scaling the service to meet demand."

A new message on the service's status page -- where the status is currently labeled as "intermittent" -- explains what's going on and the efforts being made to keep users happy.

"[W]e are having trouble scaling the service to meet demand. Many of you are trying to get in and unfortunately, you can't right now," the message states. "You're frustrated, we know it, and we know we need to fix it. Our teams have been working non-stop to identify issues and resolve them as quickly as possible. Again, these issues have no impact on the performance of the game."

Both registration and login systems have been fixed, but the demand -- said to be "exceeding even our most optimistic expectations" earlier this week -- is still too much. To compensate for this as additional servers are added, access to Elite from the applications on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will be limited for now.

As was stated when the issues first arose, gameplay data from both Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3 is safe even if you aren't able to see it at the moment. Once everything is resolved all of that data will be available through Elite.

In addition to the free and premium tiers of Elite (the latter of which costs $49.99 per year), those who bought the Hardened Edition of the game or an Elite membership by November 13 will receive Founder status. This is a lifetime status that grants access to exclusive competitions, prizes, and in-game goodies like camouflage, player cards, and emblems. This has all yet to be delivered, although doing so has been deemed "a priority."

To make up for all of the issues that early adopters have had to deal with, Founders -- which is to say, anyone with Elite at the moment -- will be receiving a free 30-day extension to their membership "to ensure that every premium member receives their full money's worth."

Additionally, everyone now has until the end of November to sign up and become a Founder (as opposed to the November 13 deadline). That's reassuring for those who, like myself, were hoping to wait for the problems to be resolved before subscribing. And yes, even those who sign up later this month and become Founders will get the extra 30 days of Elite premium membership.

While it's unfortunate that Elite couldn't have launched more smoothly, giving everyone a free month is a nice gesture to make up for an issue that might end up being resolved in less than a week. Unfortunately, we still don't have an estimate for when everything will be working properly, but at least we can play online multiplayer to pass the time.
I'm confused about Elite - it let me download it for free when I got it. Am I supposed to have bought it?
Craster wrote:

No there is a free and a paid for version of it , the free version gives you the stat tracking
The paid version gives you all the maps that will be released plus 'extras' but its not very clear yet what those will be (the beta had enhanced challenges and 'events' for BLOPS but since it doesnt work yet i dont know what else will be in here)
The extras are free DLC for a year and regular "premium" video content. I read somewhere that one of the weekly shows they'll be running stars Jason Bateman and Will Arnett, which could be interesting. Also, more clan functionality and more space to save your replays on their servers or something. The free version is just the stat tracking.
Just played the first 4 levels of the single player on Hardcore :)

Grinning and laughing the entire time, over the top action, great visuals great sound very silly. :DD

someone liked inception ;)
The single player mode is the best action movie ever. It's just hilariously over the top, with some killer set pieces on almost every level.

The multiplayer is fun, but hasn't quite clicked yet (though it surely will). Everything seems faster and more frantic than previous iterations. Hanging back and being cautious does not appear as rewarding for some reason. This might be a temporary thing or from playing Ground War (which I dislike).

I do like most of the maps, though the market type one like Chinatown is not a favourite. I do like the French one and African ones in particular.
Yeah that dark rainy Chinatown one is what I meant when I said 'shit'.
Day one sales in the UK and US only are 6.5 million units

http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/121/1212246p1.html

Quote:
Activision claims to have sold 6.5 million copies of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in 24 hours, making it the most successful entertainment launch of anything, ever.

The game took $400 million in sales in one day, according to ChartTrack estimates, beating Black Ops by $40 million and Modern Warfare 2 by $90 million. Both those games set the previous records for day-one sales.

This is only two territories, remember - European, Australian and rest of world sales aren't even taken into account. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick claims that "Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings," two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time."

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has done well critically, picking up a score of 9.0 from us and great scores from many other outlets, but has suffered a fan backlash that's seen its Metacritic user score drop as low as 1.7 over the past few days.
Metacritic user score backlash? That's worth mentioning, is it? Fucking mooks.
WTB wrote:

Its put down to people who prefer Battlefield trying to make people get that instead.

It is strange looking at some of the threads for MW on other forums just how many people are saying you should ignore it and get BF3 instead (even on the deals sites there were plenty of trolls).

It might also be because its slightly higher on Metacritic than BF3 - but actually reading all the reviews for Skyrim yesterday i really didnt care about the scores but more about what the reviewers were actually saying

Ooh The Lave, my greatest/only addition to COD. :) Yeah thats good. Unless they've got rid of the essential smoke grenades...

I've no huge desire to enter the skinner box that is multiplayer again, but I no doubt will for at least a bit. I guess it doesn't have "one in the chamber?"

And i'll admit I'm really rather looking forward to the single player. Its not like it will outstay is welcome from the sound of things. And its worth playing for nowt.

Those sales figures prove it. This is an angry birds. Hell, my girlfriend almost never plays games, but has bought the last two of these now.

Of course, everyone should be playing Dark Souls.
Dr Lave wrote:

Smoke grenades are there (although they do require about level 30 to unlock)

I do also think you'll like the Juggernaut 'reward' which gives you loads of armour and a riot shield (although you move very slowly)

Dr Lave wrote:

Nope :-(

For multiplayer you have the normal stuff (TDM / Dominations / CTF / HQPRO / FFA) plus hardcore versions (nice to see Hardcore Domination as a launch option) plus the new game modes of Team Defender (defend one person who is carrying a flag) and Kill Confirmed (kill and take the dog tags from the enemy)

There is also the Spec Ops section which has a hoard mode (2 player only) plus various other 'missions'
Ag well. Cheers for the info!
