Well, the decomposing bodies underneath are clearly rotting.
The unidentified nasty is probably the old glue or something nice and organic they used to stick the carpet down with.

I'm most proud of changing the starter motor on the Ka, and replacing the filler-upper on the toilet.
I just inspected the worktops we've had delivered only to discover a massive scratch on one of them. 
Just as I was getting ready to phone the woodworkers for a whinge I realised that, as luck would have it, it is right where I'll be cutting out for the sink.

Well if it helps by the third week I was wishing I'd decided to just make a gash job of it instead. It's satisfying now, though especially after the shithole of kitchen we put up with for the last eight years. Also it turns out that dishwashers are made of win.

I had a dishwasher free with my kitchen but I sold it because I didn't have the space...
But yeah, the kitchen was the first thing we did in this house so it had to be done quick. Since I've done more jobs in the house, I've taken my time and made sure they're right.
The perils of second hand ownership. We got a very nice Dyson from a friend of my MIL and I was wondering why it didn't seem to defluffing the carpet that well. I flipped it over to check the gubbins and found the brush axle was completely encased in a twisted tube of hair. Nice.

I'd like to say that last week I did a fine job of fixing up some knackered skirting boards, thereby proving my theory that there is nothing that No More Nails and liberal amounts of decorators caulk can't make better.

I'm still kicking myself that I didn't take any pictures of the garden here before I started landscaping it. It's now three times the usable size, and has many walls and steps and such. Work done includes building timber fences and two timber woodsheds from scratch (I love my woodsheds. I always start humming that divine comedy song when I go to get wood out of them), about 30 metres of breezeblock retaining walls (now painted white and covered with trellises and climbing plants, and looking surprisingly good) and 20 metres of drystone walling, stone steps and 15 or so metres of stock proof fencing, and laying a large patio. And rebuilding part of an exterior retaining wall integral to the kitchen wall. 100% all my own work, too - had to be after the price I was quoted just for the simple post and rail fencing. I did a boggly face.
Luckily my father in law and my dad know pretty much everything between them, so I've learnt a lot over the last three years.

I'd have thought some sort of timber crane/hoist and pulley system would be a bit more manly though.

I'm going to be attempting to fit a new light in our kitchen tonight, as the old one is horrid, but it appears the hole for the cable is miles from any joists, so I'm trying to work out how to fix it correctly without having to rip up my bedroom floor to fix a noggin. What, those things that spread out plastic arms behind the board? Yes, they work. Obviously you need to be careful not to crush or mangle the PB where you make the hole for the wire or it'll all go wrong. No swinging from the light fitting either.
I pressure-washed 3 years of crap off my decking yesterday. Does that count as DIY?

Was it someone on here who knew someone who once got sent on one of those missions on his first day, and just went home and came back in the next day telling them he'd spent hours wandering around hardware stores to no avail? 
We knew when we bought this house that it needed some serious redecorating, a while back we finally tackled it head on and I decided to learn how to plaster. Started with the office/third bedroom as its smallest.
