Super Meat Boy

So yeah, this is out now and it's 800 points for a limited time. LewieP has been banging on about the PC version all week in the XBLA thread but I feel this deserves its own thread. Just picked it up and played the first chapter. It's ace.

There's very little not to like. Buy it now. Best XBLA game in a long while and we've had some decent releases this year. It's basically N+ with meat and blood. So if you don't like the trial and error of N+, avoid. Otherwise, best thing ever. I'm not looking forward to the inevitable teeth gnashing bits later on, though.
Yeah, I think there's a hope behind the price cut to show M$ that not all games should cost 1200MSP by default.
Also this! If they get mega sales, they might think twice about shafting us for everything in futur... AHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Oh man, that was some good stuff.

But yeah, you never know!
Hmm, will be 1200 by the time I can afford any games again, I'm sure. As such I might not try the demo as I don't want to frustrate myself. Will play N+ instead to completion, seeing as I got that when it was 400.
Nuh uh, I was talking about the XBLA version. I don't think they've even finished the PC version.

Edit: For proof, see me at the top of most of the leaderboards.

Ah right! I thought the PC version was out a couple of weeks ago... Nevermind!
I'm interested but only from reading Lewies descriptions of it.

Good work Lewie!

If I'm not mistaken, they were a candidate for the Summer of Arcade, but couldn't make the deadline, so a big part of the reason MS set up the game feast was so they had a promotion for Super Meat Boy, so they shifted development to the XBLA version sharpish. PC/Mac and WiiWare versions are on the way.

Edit: Cheers. It's pretty easy to be enthusiastic about it because it's one of my favourite types of games, and it's really well made.

Feex
Oh man - I was all excited about this from Lewie's twitting but I literally cannot think of a game that was less fun than N+.

:(
I'd totally still give it a try, even if you didn't like N+.

What it has that N+ does not:
A story, and wonderful (short) cut scenes
Levels that are all totally unique, rather than just using the exact same tileset for everything.
You can skip levels if you get stuck.
Loads of lovely secret things.

You didn't like N+? The gameplay is pretty much the same, but the style is totally different and I definitely prefer it to N+ which I always found a little cold. But yeah, if you didn't like the N+ gameplay, this isn't going to be your cup of tea. Still, REALLY surprised you didn't like N+. I thought everyone liked N+. N+.

Morally, if n ot actually, sold.

"You can't do this one thing in the game you've paid for, so fuck you, you aren't going to do anything" is a deal breaker or trade-in guaranteer for me. And I keep my games pristine so someone WILL want it over a new copy, Mr Developer.
Not all the levels mind, you have to beat X number of levels to get the next chapter. And the boss levels.

I think they are pretty lenient though.
This better be good young master P as I bought it purely on the basis of you marrying it without any form of pre-nuptial agreement.

I've not even played it yet as I've been sorting my iPhone crisis out today and now the TV has been commandeered by CBeebies
I have been playing this.

Most fun.

just... one... more...go
Oh, look, my avatar (sig) is wearing the Super Meat Boy tee I unlocked.
it is cute but when I played level four of the demo and realised it was split into three stages I had the sudden realisation that this game is almost definitely going to be sadistically hard after a while.
Absolutely loving it based on the first chapter. Enough to forgive them for the wrong headed nonsense they spouted about iPhone (and thus Android) games.
Press X for Dark World! This is going to take ages to 100%!
Fucking hell, turns out I'm pretty good at this. See leaderboards for proof. I'm in the top 500 (in the world) for some of them. Yay! Trousers, fuck off.

:o

I'm 137th for 2-5 The Big Empty with an astonishing time of 7.37. King me!

edit: Although it seems most of my Chapter 1 times have been trounced since yesterday. Chapter 2, though!

How very dare you.

You do handle your meat well though.
I got bored after a few levels, I think it's just not my kind of game.

REALLY enjoyed watching Joans play it though! :D
I don't think this is for me either.. I want to love it too!
Played it, loved it, bought it.

Thank god it wasn't 1200 points though as I don't think I'd be feeling so thrifty. (not like that Limbo. Best 1200msp I've ever spent...)
Just because I hate you all, I spent a good hour of my evening smashing all of your records (bar two) on the first two chapters - light side.

:hat: *twiddles moustache*
Did you beat my 2-5?
Is that the one with the diagonal fans? If so, yes (I think).

Or is it the one where you start at the bottom and have to climb up a thin pipe as the laser blasts down. If so, no (I think).

I did spend a good five minutes trying to beat Mr Dave's (I think) time on 1-1 darkside. I managed to get it down to 1.15 seconds!
Diagonal fans. And... BASTARD!
Warning: There are a couple of save bugs.

If you collect a bandage, it is recommended that at the end of the level, you exit to map. If you collect a bandage, and then instantly retry the level, it's sometimes possible to collect the same bandage twice, which will stop you from being able to save (until you exit the game and start again).

A fix has always been made, and will be pushed out onto live (probably) on Monday.
More on that glitch

Looks like all’s not well with saving Super Meat Boy.

According to tweets posted on Super Meat Boy’s twitter account, the game’s got an “auto-save bug” which prevents your progress from being saved if you collect the same band-aid more than once every level.

The problem’s been fixed, apparently, and a patch will be released next week.

The devs are just trying to find any other glitches present in the game so that they can fix them all together. Yay.

Mega-hard platformer Super Meat Boy’s out now and can be bought for 800 MSP untill November 21. It will cost you 1200 MSP after that.
I bet you did not manage to beat my super time/score things.
I've not checked most of the leaderboards post release. I'm going to be sad when every single level isn't me, Mike from IndieGames.com and Danny B (who did the music for the game) in the top 3.

Although, interestingly, when most places posted their reviews, there was very few people (sub 10 iirc) on the leaderboards for the last level.

No.

I mean, yes. :p

Most people on my friends list haven't tried chapter three yet, so I'll be setting the pace later. Super Meat Boy is platforming Bangai-O though, isn't it?
I like the replay the the completion of a level where hundreds and hundreds of Meatboys past commit mass suicide due to my ineptitude.

Shit controls*.
The only redeeming thing it has are the dark levels.
*Seriously it's like playing N with hammers instead of hands.
You're just plain wrong, there, Wullie. The controls are tight as fuck.
Your Mum's tight as fuck.
I thought we'd decided that wasn't funny anymore.

They're responisve enough, but they're as coarse as a navvy's tongue.
Your mum... NO. I refuse to continue this crap meme. Stop it.

And besides, only poofters say "mum" in Teesside.

And what the hell does that mean? :nerd: Y'know, in real terms, we can understand.

As far as I was aware, there's only two buttons, run and jump. When I press run, he runs, and when I press jump, he jumps. Usually into massive spinning blade.

Poor lad just isn't very good at it. :)

There's directional control too, right? Not played the demo myself.
Quote:
a (1) : composed of relatively large parts or particles <coarse sand> (2) : loose or rough in texture <coarse cloth>
b : adjusted or designed for heavy, fast, or less delicate work <a coarse saw with large teeth>
c : not precise or detailed with respect to adjustment or discrimination
If you nudge a direction the cunt instantly flies half way across the screen making it fiddlier than it really needs to be. There's a run* move faster button for that.
*It works in mid air.
I find he only flies off uncontrollably if you're holding the run button. Otherwise it's pretty precise, which is exactly how it should be - trade speed for accuracy.
I think you'll find that the controls are standard 2D Mario with gravity and inertia affecting his movement, just loosened up to allow greater travel across distance.

Your mums got directional cont...*snip* I mean, yes, there's a bit of left and right to throw into the mix too.

So nothing like Mario then :DD

I'm still swithering about it as it has its charms & it's my type of game, but then games either work for me or work against me & this seems to fall into the latter camp :(

So you go for the infinitely manlier "Mummy", eh?
