For some reason, GAME convinced me to put a pre-order down on this for more money [on the rewards card when trading some junk in]. Apparently I could just cancel it and get my moolah back but I might not bother now.

Edit: for clarity. I'm still not sure what was going on but I got money on a card.

They were doing an offer where they gave you an extra 25% on every trade in if it was to go to a pre-order , i was trading in about 10 games so they told me the same - even if i just canceled it I could get my money back and I'd get a lot more for the games so I picked "GTA5' so I have a £5 pre-order for it and need to cancel it to get that £5 back but i got about £100 for my trade ins instead of about £80 so it seemed to work out as long as i'm happy having all that on a 'game' card
This is pretty great.
I have never played a Bioshock game before.

Should I start with the first one, or with this one?
Good question... I have completed the first, never played the second. I would also like to know how I'd fare with this game.

They're both very good, provided you buy into the experience and don't expect a simple get gun shoot principle — they do require you to make choices, but not to the extent that you should be concerned or agonise over those choices. The first is better, by some margin. The atmosphere is quite astonishing for a video game. [edit] it's one of the very few games I've played through twice, the second time after having played the sequel which was developed by a different company. I enjoyed it as much the second time.

From the reviews I've read, it's clear you don't need to play any of the earlier games, so you could get Infinite and if you love it, then I'd recommend getting the first for cheaps.
The original Bioshock looked astonishing and had great atmosphere indeed, but the core game mechanics and the combat feel was all off. It felt floaty and the guns weren't satisfying.

I think in general game critics over-value storytelling and art design , and I'm not convinced that this game is as good as reviews make it to be.

This speaks to what I'm wondering about: is Bioshock Infinite actually as good a game as the review ratings it's getting or, like the first one, is a lot of the praise coming from the story and design of the thing. If it's the latter then I'm not that bothered but if it's the former I'll prioritise it.

This, so many times this.
Combined with the immortality thing and I found it somewhat lacking overall.

Didnt stop me buying infinitethough due to bargain

I'll bring my copy of the first one to the quiz for you to borrow, if you like.
I have a code for the first game on Steam going spare if anyone wants it.

Bioshock Infinite is a great action game, with some brilliant set pieces.

Story is dead good too.

Kewl!
Inevitably I have caved on this.

Downloading on Steam now, but won't be ready until after bedtime so it'll be tomorrow night when I get to take a look.

If it can manage even half of the sense of pure wonder and amazement that the original game did, I'll be happy.

It's true to say that as a pure game the original did have its flaws - (I turned myself into a wrench-wielding maniac who could pretty much straight charge anything in the game and hit them in the head with my wrench until they died, purely becuase I couldn't manage anything more nuanced than that with a gamepad) - but as an atmospheric experience it was truly wondrous.
The barbershop quartet : amazing.

:this: definitely. Game developers are software engineers, not film makers. It's pointless reviewing a game like it's a film but through a 'doesn't have to be as good as a film' filter.

I'm still going to get it though, as it'll be 'good'. Just not the best thing ever.
Man, I wish professional reviewers were as good as you guys at reviewing games -- you don't even have to have played it to know how good it is? Mad skills.

Depends whether they're talking about Boosbeck or Boosbeck the third.
Boosbeck the Third, King of Prussia from 1807-1819, deposed in a violent coup d'état?

Both posters quoted above were clearly talking about Boosbeck the Third, not his grandfather.

It's just that i seen this whole hype and superlative-slinging in 2007 or whenever Bioshock was released
Wot ah disliked aboot Bioshock.

I still enjoyed the first which was very lovely but the sequel was boring as fuck; I can distinctly remember wishing it would end and rushing to the finish. I don't remember the story either which can't be a good thing.

Given the past tense, I was assuming they were talking about the first Bioshock, with some inference that they were taking current review with a pinch of salt.

And yes, I currently have autocorrecty keyboard. Don't think I have it set to not mangle mode
uh, yeah. I was talking about past games. What with not having played the new game, like. That wouldn't make any sense! I'm hoping that the hype around this one isn't like the first one and it actually is the best game evar.
A friend just posted this on Twitter... The proof readers must have had a day off.
That looks fine?

Edit ah, the the
I had to read that at least 5 times before I notcied. :S
Yeah, that's what you would expect. It's often used as a demonstration of how expectations affect perception, normally it's "Paris in the the spring" written inside a triangle. I remember it from school.

You're confusing! :p
This is fantakka! :luv: Liz!
I saw you hanging around the docks earlier. Hussy.

Seems pretty obvious to me:
1) Games reviewers have a history of hyping games with good storyline/presentation, the first Bioshock being a very good example.
2) Games reviewers have a history of hyping games. Particularly well marketed ones.
3) The new Bioshock has been hyped to fuck.

Therefore it's reasonable to predict that it probably isn't going to the best game ever based on old games. I don't think that it is not the best game ever, because that wouldn't make sense.

Fucking hell!

I was roughly taken from behind by a large gentleman with gigantic hands. I had to break his heart.
I've spent every quiet moment of my day trying to work out what the hell is going on. And in the game.

i reckon it's some sort of time loop, and the creepy couple that keep turning up are trying to sort it out. The rifts are mostly to other iterations of the time loop.
Finally got chance to start this tonight - it's a bit bloody special, isn't it?

It's managed to repeat the same trick that the original Bioshock conjured up a few years ago, a truly compelling and entirely original world that I want to explore.

Not just find my objective, not just complete things in the most efficient manner, but really look around as much as possible.

Also if you're a geek and watch the credits all the way through, you'll get a barbershop rendition of 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World' and a video with the somewhat frighteningly driven Ken Levine getting personally involved in a song session.
Must say that i'm not impressed with the controls (on the PC version) - tried an XBox 360 wireless pad but that's just a pain with this game. Tried keyboard + mouse but just can't get the mouse sensitivity right: it's either too twitchy or too sluggish.

I managed to find a comfortable setting just a little bit higher than the default. Have you tried it with mouse acceleration off and on to see if you prefer that? (Personally I like it off, but YMMV.)

I also found that the comfort of the mouse controls was directly proportionate to my framerate, with everything totally maxed out I was regularly down at around 30FPS which made the mouse feel a bit twitchy, but dropping the shadows down two notches to HIGH literally doubled that to a steady 60FPS+, which made the controls a lot smoother and far more comfortable. (Everything else I could leave at the top settings.)

The graphics option screen is cleverly designed to be representative of about as demanding as the game engine gets, and all changes are made in real time, so you can immediately see what impact your changes are having on your framerate. If you can get 60FPS (or thereabouts) on the graphics options screen, that will relate to a pretty steady 60FPS in the game - and should help with the mouse controls. My experience was a lot better once I knocked the shadow options down from MEGA-SUPER-CRAZY-ULTRA to plain old HIGH (and if I'm entirely honest, I really had to look hard to see much of a difference).

FRAPS or MSI Afterburner will give you an OSD of your framerate.
Thanks for the suggestions, will investigate further. :)
Holy shit!

Overall impressions?

I'm loving it to pieces myself, fantastic stuff. First game in a while that's made me want to sit back and just watch stuff.
Its very, very good indeed. Combat is a joy, each fight is like a playground. You could play the same fight ten times and do it in ten different ways.

It looks awesome (even though I played it on the Xbox), a clear case of art direction trumping polygon-pushing. It sounds even better.

The story... well the last 20 minutes will make your head explode.

:blown: :blown: :blown: :blown: :blown: :blown:
This is fucking brilliant.

When you kill someone with Murder of Crows, you can say "Crowned!".

You're welcome.
Tried the mouse patch and things are much better:

I can play the damn game now!
I've bought this.

Never played Bioshock 2, and felt 1 should have ended after the twist and never needed a sequel.

As such, I'm surprised just quite how excited I am for this.

In all fairness that really does help, I had found a comfortable(ish) setting but that gives a far greater degree of granularity.

0.5 as the high value was a bit off for me though, I changed it to 0.9 and then dialled the slider down to about 75%.

Nice tip Mr Candles :)
Wow, this game is just amazing. And I'm only about a quarter of the way through it, so plenty more wonder to come. :D

In terms of just the art design it's superb - the level of detail and care that has gone into it is just wonderful. The gameplay is very well balanced (I'm playing it on Medium difficulty), the AI is great as is the animation and the sound. Even Elizabeth, as a character, is decidedly non-irritating and actually useful (finding things, giving me health packs and weapons when needed, etc).

I can't praise it highly enough (now that I've sorted out the mouse control sensitivity issue).
Elizabeth is so good I find myself thinking that she should make the occasional mistake to appear more human.

That's pretty high praise, when you think about it.
Hurry up you fuckers! I'm dying for the inevitable spoilery brain blending discussion!
I wish it had a proper quicksave/quickload feature, instead of checkpoints.

Personally I like to save ALL THE FUCKING TIME, not to cheat, but just to try and try again and retry the same sections. Different tactics, different approaches, different weapons, all out nuke, bit of stealth, and so on. (In the case of Bioshock games, really fuck around with my plasmids, or vigors as they are now, and kind of use the game as a sandbox to play around with stuff, safe in the knowledge I can go back to a save.)

Plus the concept of having to reach the next mandated checkpoint irritates me, because it means I can't stop when I want to, I have to get to the next swirly circle that says my progress is saved - which can mean leaving the game on pause for 30 minutes or more, or just quitting out and starting again from the previous checkpoint if I can't resume that session.

This is my single biggest complaint with the game, which is otherwise truly magnificent, but I can't see any valid reason for them taking proper save functionality out of there.
Finished. If this isn't GotY then, fuck, I guess The Last Of Us will be unfathomably good.
