No, I mean they're both chunks of data captured straight from the device ready for the computer without any processing going on at the device end. I obviously know they are different.

Ta, Bik.

RAW is, I think, just an umbrella term applied to "no compression not even lossless" camera formats (in whatever byte order/colour depth/that-thing-I-can't-for-the-life-of-me-remember-the-name-of,-YUV/4:2:2-type-stuff they fancy, and including whatever metadata they fancy, also in whatever random format they fancy). TWAIN is a specification to allow applications to talk to scanner/camera drivers/tools consistently.

It is an umbrella term, but capitalising it makes it appear as if it's an acronym and it isn't. It's raw data, by and large, from the camera sensor. Sure, there is some tweaking being done by the camera, but as you say, it's subtle. Because new sensors come out on a regular basis, there's always a slight lag when a new camera is released before the software plug in to read the raw file is widely available.
If you bother checking the "details" tab on the OS updates on your mac, you'll notice that the most frequently appearing thing is raw (well, they say RAW) support for new cameras.

I assume there's an office somewhere in California with one each of the very latest cameras from all manufacturers all stacked in the corner...

Ach, I call it raw, Raw, RAW. Now I've got a sore throat ?:|

There is no right way to call it, it's just easy and incorrect to assume that it's actually an acronym and consequently a format when it's capitalised.

Just capitalise it. It means you can shout it. Also, it's a manly sounding word. Just ask Grimlet...

Also any recommendations for Camera Tripods? Ideally compact but tall, I have a small one although it too tall for it to be useful most of the time.

A good tripod will outlast several cameras, so don't scrimp.

And ‘compact but tall’ likely won't give a good tripod unless the earth stops moving.
I'm very happy with my £100 Giottos one I bought at Jessops, if it's any help. Tripod bag was a piece of shit though, wore out after about thirty expeditions.
I'm thinking of selling my EF-S 10-22mm. I can't remember the last time I used it.

£670 new these days, but only go for £510 or so used on Ebay. Hmm.

See what the shops will give you for it? They always seem to add a couple of hundred quid to a good second hand lens for reasons unknown.... well when their selling them anyway.

FFS.
Cheers for mentioning Quidco yesterday Grim.

I ordered my D5000 last night from Dixons (£516.92 original price but used the '3PAY' code to get 3% off so £501) through Quidco (£16 cash back!) and then I'll have the £50 rebate through Nikons offer as I bought it in April.

So £435 in the end :metul: Pretty good seeing as there are plenty of retailers selling them between £550 - £599.
Thank Grim... with beer.
Thanks Grim...!

I might phone some up and have an ask around. Going through Ebay and Paypal, each with their cuts, is in no way preferential to a private sale, especially with the hassle and risk involved. Cheers for the suggestion.

Heh, sorry, chap :D

I figured out why I don't use it any more. I don't have decent transport, except for my bicycle; I'll always carry my Camelbak so have no room for a DSLR, and I'm not walking around in SPD shoes etc. I can take my camera when I go out with Miss Malabar, but if there's one thing I don't like doing, it's holding people back on days out while I take photos; my dad used to do that, and it frustrates the whole family. The wide angle hasn't really been as suited to the area around here as my 17-55 walkaround lens is.

Bears are big in Germany, so you could organise that gift for Grimdilocks...

Not sure I want to see any of you in lederhosen, with the exception of SDG who I think would look pretty good in lederhosen (sorry to all the other ladies in the group if you feel left out, SDG is the only of you I've actually met)

I've just thought she might think cable cars were buses in the sky.
We should organise an Oktoberfest meet!

For next year, obv.

Seriously.
Aye.

Not long to go now!
Who's booking the table?
Mods! Can we split the Oktoberfest meet discussion out plz?
Got my case dropped off and SDHC card posterd through this morning, but no one was at home when the Camera was delivered. Have to wait until tomorrow now till I can pick it up from the Post Office.

:(

:)

I like the idea that a company would bring out something that you can add to their old cameras (dating back to 1957 apparently) to bring them bang up-to-date. £10k though.. ouch.
That's fantastic.
The Gorillapod turned up today, Malabar. Thank you very much. Now it's time for me to select a suitable gift for you in return...

My D5000 is now in my sweaty palms too.

Very much an awesome day so far.

Excellent. Hopefully you'll get more use from it than I did.

How's your new Camera?
It's bloody lovely. Only really scratched the surface so far but I've taken some shots of Baba Z and Poppie (my dog) and some close ups of tulips messing with the depth of field. Early days yet but I'm in love. I'll post a sample or two up tonight if I get the chance, but sunshine and beer are calling me.
Glad to hear it Zardoz! I keep looking at an AF-S 35mm prime lens for my nikon, but it's £169. Think I'll hold off for now and rely on the lovely new weather to revitalise my photography.

OH! Found out something interesting about my kit lens. Apparently it only gets pin sharp results around f/11 to f/18, with anything after increasingly softer. F/5.6 and up to f/11 is pretty good though. The thing is, in landscape photography I was always thinking that narrower aperture is automatically sharper, but it ain't the case. And I was using small apertures and tripods for medium-long shots I didn't need it for. So in future I'm going to try for the up to f/18 which should be enough for many landscapes, and enjoy far sharper pics with better light as a result!

I'll have a look into yours, Zardoz, see what advice I can dig up. What kit lens did you get with it, mate?

Enjoy the sun and beer! Wish I wasn't in work! :)
Cheers Pete, my kit lens is an AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR

I've also been looking at that 35mm, I think that will be what I ask Santa for, I've spent quite enough already.

Ah ha! Same as mine!

It's a good lens. Not superb, but solid, dependable and good sharpness. My only beef with it really is that it makes using filters a pain, as when you focus it rotates the front element meaning you have to realign the filter. This ain't bad with just one filter, but with the polariser and the ND toastrack it's a real fiddle. Aside from that, it's pretty great.

Pro-tip, go manual for macro. Trying to auto-focus on flowers and it gets easily confused.
Ta Pete, from the macro stuff I've done so far it's been pretty good. Mind you it is a fantastically sunny day so that probably helps.
The part of my brain that is really bad at keeping hold of money is suggesting that I buy a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ8 as a pocket camera. I'm not listening to it, but it won't shut up.

Aye, your lens will have a sweet spot, both in aperture and zoom. Optics aren't brilliant at keeping their quality over such a wide range of settings.

I'll cut that part of your brain out for £169.99.

We've got the TZ7 from a year or so ago, it's an ace little camera for a point-and-shoot. It's quite a bit bigger and heavier than lesser compacts though, but that's the trade off. I do like the panasonic compacts, and the TZ8 with the extra 'creative' modes sounds cool.
It will come as little surprise to most that I now own a Panasonic TZ8.
Did you not consider the TZ10? I think the built in GPS would have got the extra few quid out of me.
£50 dearer, and the only real differences are the GPS and improved video, neither of which interest me in the slightest.
Congratulations on your new arrival.
Hmm. Less than chuffed with Panasonic charging £45 for a replacement battery, and chipping them so the camera refuses to use replacements from other brands.
Should have let me cut out your spendy gland.

Offer is still open.
Is that the cheapest you've found for them online btw?
Gaywood has a mate who deals in batteries, I think.
