To be fair, a bigger bike isn't necessarily going to have a greater chance of killing him. His ZX-6R will more than suffice for that.

Ramsea: I need a more biggerer and fasterer bike. Maybe a ZX10R
Me: Do you want to die? Do you hate your children that much you're prepared to kill yourself and put them through that? Because if you buy a bike, I *will* kill you.
Ramsea: hehehe! Hey kids, come and see Daddies new bike!

I fail at shattering his dreams. I'm doing this wife thing all wrong.

Clearly I need husband lessons from bloody Ramsea.

Hahahah! Excellent.

Okay - this idea has, unsurprisingly, been kiboshed. I'm allowed an MGB to restore though. Hardly the same bloody thing.

Don't do this, it will cost a fortune and you will still have an MGB at the end of it...
My brother-in-law had an MG with a little safety catch thingy on the gear stick that allowed you to flip back the lid to reveal a big red "overdrive" button. He never dared press it.

Before his current TR4a, dad restored an MGB. It was not particularly costly - cars are plentiful and relatively cheap, and the parts are readily available (both second hand and newly manufactured) and not particularly expensive. I did drive it around a fair bit before he sold it and it was a nice car.

Father in law is restoring a Herald, of all things.

Squirt - dad's MGB had an overdrive button - all it is is an extra gear, effectively.
All that did was make it go slower. I had one of those too :D

Yes, get something that was halfway decent to start with ferchrissakes.

Hmmm, how about a Lotus Elan?
I would rev the engine, say 'Engage Overdrive', flick the panel open, and then press the button.

They're not exactly cheap, nor cheap to restore. I want something that's going to be a mechanical hobby, not an investment.

That said, I'm planning on upgrading whatever it is with a larger engine, better suspension/brakes etc. I'm tempted by a Midget, as they're cute. A TR6 may be a go, or a Spitfire - the large engine bays give scope for improvement.

I restored a mk1 MGB GT with my dad for my first car. My dad restored an MG Midget for my sister, he also restored an MG Roadster and dropped a Rover V8 into it, so I speak with a little bit of knowledge.

Don't restore an MG, they are shit.

If you care going to do anything like that, then build a locost or caterham or something. Choose something when it is done that actually is enjoyable to use! :D
Changing the engine on anything takes it well beyond "hobby".

Dax Cobra?

Long term hobby, chap - I'm going to use this as a method of learning about several things, including welding, with the help of Dad and Father In Law (Dad restores bikes and cars now, FiL used to modify and rebuild cars when he was younger and is now starting again with a restoration on a Herald). I was originally going to make one of those "Locost" Lotus 7 copies, but the scarcity of the old Ford Escort 1100 donor cars has struck that out.

YMMV, of course, but dad and I both liked the MGB. Prefer the TR4a, of course... ;)
I think we're veering well away from the threat topic (though it could be argued that...)
While Chris is posting, it's on topic.

:belm:
Does belming in the belm thread automatically mean it's one of the most belmingest things said, or do we have to remove the belms if they are not belming enough?

I am fairly certain that opinion is a valid defence, and wiki seems to agree.

Since such actions are usually civil, the well heeled celeb can usually make the accuser capitulate long before it goes anywhere near a court. Events of a few weeks ago prove that.
You just go ahead and name some people you think are paedophiles, then. Remember, in your world you don't need proof to back up your slander. It's your opinion, afterall, which is ironclad and not uninformed and ignorant. Any rapists you want to pluck out either? Paddington Bear, maybe.
I have always thought there's something a little odd about somebody who likes marmalade that much.
That section on Wikipedia doesn't apply to UK libel law which is one of the most stringent in the world.

It even has it's own Wikipedia page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_defamation_law
Dimrill wrote:

Isn't it libel?
Yeah, but I treat this place like a conversation, so y'nkaa... technically etc.

You can't invoke the law of the land one second and then wave away using completely the wrong terminology the next on the basis of how you feel about BEEX.

Pretty sure 'how Dimrill feels about BEEX' isn't written into law anywhere.
I think legally I'm right, but someone with expensive hotshot lawyers might make it expensive for anyone trying it if they felt so inclined.

Also I don't think it's belm to be asking about something?

Unless anyone's worried that the Jeans company might sue?

If I say "Mr Xxxx commits fraud" who is to say what Mr Xxxx I'm talking about? Or even If I say "Famous Person Y is a murderer" who's to say that Famous Person Y isn't my affectionate nickname for Mr Xxxx?

I've no idea, I've never played it.
You should. It's a classic.

That's brilliant. And Leslie Nielsen was a don, and Airplane (or 'Flying High' as it's known over here) is a stone-cold classic. The sequel is good too.
