If you boot from the install dvd, you can repair the boot loader. That'll get windows booting.

Wait. Is this a Mac?

No, sorry I didn't mean boot camp. It's a pc with mac os on the ssd. I'm trying to make it fully Windows, while getting my stuff on there from the old pc.
Clearly you need to get another pc to use as a starter motor.
I'm thinking that might be the case. I'll stack them like a tumble dryer on a washing machine. Or an LED powered Razzle pile up.
If you don't want anything off that machine at all, when you boot off the Windows disk it'll let you format both disks completely as drives that Windows can use. You can install windows from the disk on the SSD, but it probably won't activate and you'll have to phone them up and lie about something like replacing the motherboard and see what they say.
To move your stuff over, either get them both running and copy whatever you want to keep across the network, or get an external USB 3.5" disk caddy and stick your old hard drive in it, plug it in, then copy stuff across
Shouldn't be an issue with no changed hardware

Edit: windows activation
Thanks everyone. I've used Diskpart to delete a shit load of partitions my friend had created, and also managed to delete my external drive volune, meaning it no longer shows up in file explorer. Idiot.

Fucking hell, this is a real bollock I've dropped here. It won't initialise and when i try and make it initialise in Disk Manager or whatever it's called I'm given a fatal error.

I read it as Fop using his own Windows disk on his mate's PC.

Doesn't matter. Codes are tied to hardware, not discs

If you boot from the Windows disk you should be able to use it to rebuild everything from scratch.

Yeah. And it's currently tied to the hardware on his old PC, not the new one.

New PC will have its own license
DavPaz wrote:

To do what?
Well no, because he's formatting it and using the licence key from his old disk, which is the old license key. Fop doesn't have a Windows license key for the new PC
You're right. I missed the word "trial"
DavPaz wrote:

We're through the looking glass, boys!

Just when I want to set them. Right now they've defaulted to random and a nice shade of pink lol.

I need a new NAS. Mine is 10mb, old, slow and SMB1. So every time I go away and come home Windows forgets it because you have to keep enabling SMB1 support or it switches off. I'm annoyed with it. Plus the NAS shell is vibrating really bad. So I'm going to use the small one for that, and changing the LEDs lol.

Right, I made excellent headway. Used my Windows disc from my old pc to set up windows on the new. Pc. It accepted the code.

I even set up two drives as RAID, something I didn't even know existed two weeks ago.

And now when I try and install nord vpn I'm getting a. Net framework error message (can't install 4.8)

And nord vpn customer service tell me to turn off the frameworks in Windows settings, then update Windows manually.

But Windows is refusing to update, throwing up error message 0x80240fff.

Am I basically going to have to speak to MS? And is there something I should say to avoid buying a whole new windows licence?
First step would be to manually try and install whatever .net version it's looking for, you can get it off the Microsoft site

No dice, I'm told it's not supported by my operating system when I run the 4.8 installer.

Is that fan at the back showing temps and text? I think that's quite neat (I was going to say cool but couldn't bear to hear the whining). Can you define the text / options yourself?

Yes. You disconnect the fan from the power and insert the programming cable into the middle (it's not visible in pics) and then you open up an app and input what you want. IIRC it has 5 or 6 lines.

Right now it is just saying expletives because I've not been back and done the final lines.

My X51 came last week and I got to it today. It was filthy so I done some initial testing. It was as described. "Black screen white text, no boot". It was booting to the Windows 8 recovery screen.

So I stripped it down.

Image

Which took two hours. Cleaned everything bit by bit.

Image

Put the plastics in the sink and scrubbed/dried then cleaned the rest of the inner components.

I then replaced what I thought was a dead 1tb WD red with an old 500gb I had lying around. It just made this odd buzzing sound. Oh noes, the HDD power rail is dead :(

Then the weirdest thing happened. Amazon were taking ages with my 120gb SSD I bought for it so I put the WD red back in and stuck in a boot stick for Win 10. Installed it, went on fine. Then the SSD came so I pulled it out (you can only run one HDD atm, I'm going to sort that but don't have my tools) and then installed Win 10 home on the SSD. Went a treat, it even had a 8 key that transferred to 10 so no money spent there.

Then once I was happy with the install I removed the SSD again and put the 1tb back in, this time running a full and lengthy surface scan.

Image

So there was literally nothing wrong with the hardware at all. That never happens. All I need to do now as I said is solder in another SATA power cable and connect up the SSD. Very happy for a total cost of £106. Will make a cracking rig to watch streamed stuff from my NAS, and play older games (I still have yet to get into FO1 and the rest on the anthology edition). I did get in some practice on FO2 a few weeks ago and really started to like it, so I stopped before I ruined everything and will start on 1.

I also bought this in the sale. This is for my main rig at home and will replace the Titan XP for now.

As well as a water block for it.

I like it, it's also kinda pointless unnecessary really, but that's part of what makes it cool

Title of the rig.

Big longer than hell cat though lol.
I’m thinking about getting some compressed air and blowing the shit out of my PC. What’s the risk of blowing something off and totalling it?

Zero. Continue.

For pretty much anyone, 0 risk. With you and your ability to cause pc issues, almost certain failure.
"Is compressed air suitable for putting out computer fires? How about house fires?"

None, just don't let it whizz the fans around. Hold them in place, or they could spin backward and send a surge.

But yeah other than that no risk, just do it outside lol.
I am after a new mouse can be wireless or wired, It is for a desktop PC

what are folks recommendations.
Logitech MX518
If you are happy with wired, then there is no other choice.

Whatever Logitech one fits your preferences and budget. MX Master, maybe. I've switched to the MX Vertical and they're nice too.

Fancy!
I get some mild RSI in my right elbow, so it was a decision mostly driven by that. (It does seem to have helped a bit, too.)
Thanks, i will look at the master and mx 518
I have an MX Master, they're very good mice.

MX518 is a classic, I still have one kicking around somewhere although it's very ratty so you wouldn't want it ;)

Looks nice, I'd like to try one to see if I could 'draw' with it like a normal mouse. It looks like there's typos on every price point I've seen online though.

I think you'll find it's very mousey, actually.
I use a Logitech M185 and really can't fault it for the price. Does everything I need it to do, and it's wireless.

I'm too used to having the extra buttons for back/forward. These cheap onoes from amazon are fine unless you're an expert gamer or something probably (although I've played loads and it's been okay):

For what it's worth, I use this one...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-GM-M6 ... 154&sr=8-2

It's a logitech rip-off and it works fine.

That is the one I have had and it as just died. I bought 2 the Mx6800 (works pc) AND MX6880x (Home PC). The home one dies last week, and my spare is too clunky

Going to sound like an absolute cretin here, but what do you use the back/forward buttons for?
Mostly just for browser back/forward but they work in some other things too.
I use a standy-uppy mouse like Doc was talking about because I had problems with my wrist before it was cool. Anyway, it's made by Autley, those well known, erm, people. But it works fine, as you'd expect.

This is the most boring thread for a while ;)

Autley user here too. :) This one in fact (although it's out of stock now). All the blurb says it's for people with big hands ("It may not fit well for small hands or women"), but it's been fine for me so far.
