Good question. My PC has a USB C port but I ignore it. Should I be using it?
USB-C is reversible (you can't put it in the wrong way - title), massively improved bandwidth, can deliver loads more power than the older USB standards, and can carry video.
So you could have one cable doing video, data transfer and power, I think it's something crackers like up to 100w compared to 2w or whatever the old one was.
Basically it's just better at everything, and the connectors are smaller too!

I've always loved how as time has progressed, the "U" in USB has become less appropriate.
My work laptop gets 130W over type C, no idea if that's a Dell special though. However the dock only does mouse if I plug it in the wrong way, good going Dell!

Well if you've got enough devices that would benefit from it I suppose. From memory I've never plugged anything into the USB-C port on my PC.
You also have to be careful with USB-C due to the power it can carry, cheap nasty cables and suchlike can be hazardous. It's the cables that have the older connector on one end and the USB-C connector on the other end I think that can be dodgy, so if you have the USB-C end plugged into your phone, and you plug the USB-A end into your PC, a shit cable that's not up to spec might let your phone think it can do its fast charging thing, and try to draw too much power and bust the port on your PC.

I've looked at these before and I would like one, however... my PC is under my desk so the cable wouldn't be long enough. I'd need one with a longer cable or an extension lead.
Then we get into the 'dodgy leads' scenario that Hearthly is talking about.

I was recently reminded that I own a Steam Link. I didn't plug it in though, but rather sideloaded the Steam Link app to my Fire TV, which works just as well.
I've had a mixed bag of results with how games work with Steam Link. Anything that was made during the last console generation (and has a controller option, natch) seems to work absolutely fine but older stuff can be dodgy. Fable: The Lost Chapters didn't work really at all due to a combination of mouse controlled menus and patchy controller options. Still pretty impressive stuff though, and it saves me buying Lego Marvel Superheroes twice

I too own a Steam link. I think I used it once to see if it works, found out it did and then put it back in the box... along with the steam controller.
Bought more parts for my second PC. I won't add to wongawatch because they're not gaming parts.
Bought 4x4gb kit of ram so I have 8 matched for 32gb ram. Also decided to replace the PSU because it's 9 years old and has blue cables which I'm sick of.
I'm going to use it primarily for VMs. I might start scam baiting with it, given how many calls my poor mother gets from Indian scammers.

Anyone got a semi-decent graphics card for sale that they don't want any more? Doesn't have to be super-duper, but all of the various PC bits I took out when I upgraded my PC to Ryzen 3 the other month are sitting gathering dust and I just need a graphics card to get it back up and running for the kids to play games on.
i have a hd4850. just sat in a drawer, if any good for you?

Managed to get a "SAPPHIRE NITRO+ Radeon RX 570 8GB GDDR5" for cheaps from some place that was selling dismantled mining kit.
I'm well impressed, although I am now down the rabbit hole and looking at a new mobo/CPU/RAM combo for my birthday.
Also think I should get one of those cases with a window on the side to show off the dust and my beautiful cable management.

Was playing DCS World last night, so good. You get two planes a SU-25t and a P-51. It's so nerdy, I spent a quarter of an hour last night just trying and ultimately failing to start the engine on the Mustang and loved every minute.

My Devil 64 was a miner. Works fine. I did change the paste to Kryonaut the other day though.
Not done any cable management yet at all.

We've got one of those cases at work, or something very similar. The PC it's part of cost 5 grand or something. They're just as ludicrous a use of space in real life as they look in photos.
I got it in 2015 on sale for around £1100, IIRC. Wasn't a bad spec and cost me about £200 more than a similar build yet had the Dell next day onsite warranty.
Which I thought was good.
The footprint is kinda annoying though, being huge yet the case is quite cramped inside. Cooling is good though and it's very solid.

New exciting PC bits ordered! Got a Ryzen 5 3600, 16GB of RAM and a motherboard. Should be a decent gain over the 5 year old bits they're replacing.

Seems the combination of parts I have make the monitor go to sleep. Which crashes games. It's either the lack of extra power for the PCIE lanes on this board, or, the Vega 64 is a greedy pig. Or a combination of both.

I think it's got a hybrid thing in it. I'll probably get an SSD at some point, although once it's loaded into say, X-Plane will it actually make any difference to anything?
Even if it's not loading assets from disk in real time it'll be using the swap file on disk as virtual ram, so yeah it'll help.
Ah okay, so even if it's just a 250GB one with just the OS on it and I keep game files on the HDD it'll still help then? I was thinking I'd need a 2TB one or end up shuffling stuff around.
