iPhone can't have all the fun

Ah, that makes sense.

This vibration is going to take some getting used to. When I'm typing fast it's constantly vibrating! Strange.
My Hooowaaaway P20 Pro decided to change my keyboard from GBoard to SmartKey, changed some sound effects for things, and generally make a few little tweaks and changes I had no interest or desire to see happen - which is kind of how Android has been for a while now.

Really dumb for devices without a notch now.

They've also blocked out a segment of the middle of the notification bar which you can't use for anything now. So all phones might as well have notches.

They also made the 'switch apps' bit worse and the 'select text' bit way better.

Oddly, my phone has a notch and the clock stayed where it is.
The Switch apps button bit is very, very similar to how the Windows phone used to switch apps.

Pioneers I tell ya!
Does anyone even remember any of this stuff, I've lost track of how many little tutorials I've seen from both the Android side and the HWAAAAAAAAWAY side, but I never fucking remember any of them.

Except double knuckle tap for screenshot, that's a good one.

Apple leads again!

But all Apple's current phones have notches.

Yes.

That's what he means.

That doesn't seem to have worked so well.

It's fine on Pixel; OEMs gonna OEM I guess
12 hour clock?!
Yup my BlackBerry is far right. The clock that is :)
The recent update seems to have broken the voice input. It won't work anymore while the screen is locked. That's annoying.

Should it work with the phone unlocked? That seems like a security hole.
Yeah, it worked before the update. Maybe I had a setting turned on or something?
Anyone else noticed that equalizers just don't fucking work anymore?
I've noticed that they've taken the perfectly fine and usable volume controls which could be controlled with one button press and now hidden them behind a menu which requires two buttons presses in an unintuitive portion of the screen... But you know, progress and all that. I'm sure it makes sense to someone.

Me and Mrs Hearthly had a meeting at school today to discuss how Jnr's getting on and to discuss with the IOM's best autism expert how we can get her through the next two and a half years and hopefully get GCSEs in English and Maths at least. The teachers and the assistants are the most wonderful people, and the lady who's really deep into ASD is hard to get hold of for a meeting but we managed to get all five of us together for an hour to discuss the path forward - and we were very grateful to be able to attend this meeting.

So what do you do in such a scenario? Make sure your phone isn't going to start piping up about anything when you don't want it to.

And yeah, all of a sudden you get a load of new sliders and icons and choices where before a single action made your phone shut the fuck up. And yes I know the answer will be 'Ahhh but you can still do that exact same thing but in a slightly different way! Stupid tech heathen!'

I do sometimes wonder if the folks who foist this stuff on us via mandatory updates have any earthly idea how fucking annoying it is.
The Samsung told is out in a couple of months, looks kind of interesting, I might try one...

$1980 for the cheapest version. Fuck that then! :D
It's the same price as the most expensive iPhone so

Early adopters who want to adopt early have to pay the price.
It's $500 more than the most expensive iPhone.

:this:

And that price is stupid too.
Feels like stating the obvious but seriously, is this really not expected to get a big crease down the middle after a couple of months of use? If it manages to avoid that then fine, I do believe in magic.

They'll have tested the shit out of that no doubt because it's a very obvious concern but I'm with you in being very sceptical that over time it won't ever be an issue. Not that I'm interested in it anyway but I'd only ever pick it up if the warranty was very robust around that specific issue.

Yep; the price I'm seeing for the Fold is $1,980 and the US Apple store has it's most expensive iPhone model (XS Max 512GB) as $1,449.00
Yes, I was looking at the converted amount (£1,500), but of course it'll they'll just change the currency denominator and it'll be £1,900.

Did you add VAT? The USA price won't include any sales tax.
It's so much fun upping the limit on mobile phone cover with insurance carriers multiple times a year. Bloody greedy bastard phone companies...

"Greedy", unlike all those public-spirited not-for-profit insurance companies.
Here’s an idea, Troops, and sorry if it’s a bit “far out”, but perhaps what if you didn’t buy the world’s most expensive phone?

He “sells” mobile phone insurance.

Exactly! Salt of the earth we are.
If I smash my phone with a hammer can I get a new more expensive phone for free?

I'm still using the old Google Now launcher and for some reason they've removed the 'Alt Tab' style feature and it's killing me; I never realised how massively I relied on it until it was gone.

I noticed today that this has started working again, just as I was beginning to get used to not having it. I'm not even sure at this point if it's the Google Now launcher that 'owns' that function or if it's an OS level thing and thus Samsung at fault.

Wait, so the folded screen wraps around the outside.
How do you put it down without the screen getting scratched?

Carefully.
I wonder if it can fold both ways and they're just demonstrating the fact that you can have it as a normal phone shape.

Nope, outside wrap only, it avoids a crease apparently.

Plus, won't it be super slippy to hold, and you can't put a case on it
That'll look great with a £2.99 screen protector from China.
It looks really bulky when folded, like some forgotten, janky PDA thing from the early part of the century.

This, however, is quite possibly true, unless they do something really clever, case-wise.

It looks pretty much like having two phones in your pocket. I'm sure it's a bit lighter than that but probably not by much.
Cor, fancy looking tech - not sure i personally am interested but it's a cool setup nonetheless.

I suspect they will invent the brand new idea of a slip case and it'll cost 99 quid.
I had a really nice slip case for an iphone, with a little tab to pull on so the phone would pop out a little. It was my favourite ever case.

Will these foldy phones need to be re-folded to take a call, if someone rings while it's open? It'd look daft holding a tablet sized device up to the ear, or using an awkward hold like the N-Gage.
