Yes, it's only just been announced. It was still under embargo yesterday. Your friend is naughty.

I'm seeing him tonight. I'll tell him.

I'll never forget the amount of space between the top of his head and the punchline.
If I get a pixel 3 will Android Auto stop repeating the new message sound over and over again for fucking ever? Even though the phone is on super-duper silent when I connect it?
My oneplus6 updated to android pie yesterday.
Seems pretty much the same to me, just a different background...
I upgraded my Google Drive to 100GB. It warned me it would take up to 24 hours for the new storage to be available, and then completed the upgrade in about 15 seconds.

Guess it's good to have a bit of wriggle room.
Hey all, quick question. I have a Android phone I bought about 6 months ago. It's a nice spec and has a lovely screen and build quality, but there is one issue with it that does get on my nerves from time to time..

Basically if I change the wallpaper to anything other than the one that came with the stock phone it changes.. However, as soon as I reboot the phone it goes back to the default one. I have installed three updated ROMs on the phone from the manufacturer (Koolnee, I have the K1) and none of them have fixed the issue.

Is there a way to get into the stock images on the phone and forcibly change them somehow? or am I stuck with it?
I don't have a solution to this but a similar thing happened to my GPD XD. That runs Android.

I never found a fix for it.
Buy a (Moto) 360
I'll sell you one.

Yeah I don't think there's any fixing this.. I remembered that on my Oppo I had to install ES file explorer, and use that to set the wallpaper. It too (the Oppo) had an issue with it. However, using ES it worked. Not on here. Just does the same thing as soon as you reboot.

Ah well. At the price I paid for such a highly specced up phone with such a lovely screen and gorgeous build quality I can't really complain. It does do everything I need it to.
I now absolutely despise my Moto g5 for a multitude of reasons, not all of which I'm sure are lenovo's fault (but most of them definitely are).

Glad I never recommended it to people.

Whoops.
Well having gone through another destructive ROM update to find I still could not change the wallpaper I decided to get a new phone. I picked up a brand new Blackberry Keyone for £169 and I could not be happier. It's absolutely friggin fantastic.

I stopped looking at them after the PRIV, because they were prohibitively expensive and had caveats but this Keyone really is an absolute knockout. It took me about 5 minutes to start whacking out full emails without a single typo (versus having one on every single word I typed on a prod screen) and reminded me a lot of my Blackberry Q10, which was the last of the easy to type on Blackberries. I went to a Passport after that, and aside from the caveats (weird square screen so crap for watching movies etc, and very heavy and wide keypad that you could not type as fast on) it was a lovely phone. Beautifully built. However, side loading was very hit and miss and BB10 was starting to show its age.

The Keyone? best phone they have ever made. You still get absolutely everything Blackberry are good at, but you get Oreo too. Absolutely love it. I also love how you can set keyboard "hard press" shortcuts. So for Youtube all I have to do is hold Y. And so on. It's also amazing for reading forums, because the scroll is part of the keypad and not the screen (meaning you don't cover it with your hands at all whilst reading). I would imagine this would also make it amazing for Kindle et al. It just has everything.. One thing I never did like about Blackberry was the terrible software support (like, app availability) and so on. Now? it has everything.
I did not realise blackberry still made phones.

They don't. They put some of their apps and their branding on android devices made by a third party for them.
Ok, Rolls-Royce use Iphones with Blackberry apps, which i thought odd

So do we. Every financial does. Blackberry are great at software and networking.
cool, learn something new everyday
KovacsC wrote:

I didn't either tbh. After the couple they made after the Passport reviews were very cold, so I stopped looking.

I don't know who makes this thing, but I love it.

Yeah very business/security focused. Their password locker is great if you're a forgetful goon like me.
Anyone have any experience with the Motorola G6? My old S7 is getting laggy and crashy, so think it might be time to move to something new, and am considering something budget. Reviews suggest the photos on the G6 are decent enough, though with a slow camera.

Otherwise I've found a decent deal on a Pixel 3 which works out at £630 over 24 months, with 9GB data, though am slightly put off by the lack of expandable storage.

I've got the standard G6 and I've been really happy with it so far. I don't exactly push my phones to the limit in terms of high CPU games or filling it up with stuff, but it does everything I need it to do without a problem. Only two annoyances -

- I couldn't find a way to remove the Google search bar using the stock launcher, so I've ended up putting Evie on just to give me a little more control
- The glass back to the phone looks nice but it means there's almost no grip at all and unless you buy a cover for the rear, your phone will spend a lot of time sliding to the floor

Also, I wasn't overly happy with the stock camera app, so I've put Open Camera on instead.

If you can hang on until this evening Mr Fop, PC PRO did a massive mega budget-midrange phone megatest this month, there was one costing £140 that they said was a like a proper decent smartphone. It was a Motorola one IIRC.

I can scan it in for you when I get home.
Cheers chaps! Working it out, the G6 is roughly £200 pounds cheaper with my current Giffgaff tariff over two years, than the EE Pixel 3.

Which in the scheme of insane mobile phone prices, isn't that much, but £200 is still £200.

How is the battery life on the G6, DM?

No complaints on battery life, but if I'm at the PC, I've always got the phone in a stand, charging, so I've never actually run it all the way down as yet; probably not even down to 50%. I always have bluetooth enabled for pairing with my watch and Wi-Fi on all the time too and I've never had to dash for a charger anyway.
Here you go, Mr Fop.

The Moto E5 Plus is the £140 sensation, but the G6 did very well too.

Forgive me for not scanning all six million * pages, if there are any others you're interested in from the summary pages let me know and I can scan those in for you.

* Approx.

My g5 has turned to garbage. I was pleased with it at first but a lot of the hardware is failing - fingerprint scanner, power button, usb port, capacitive screen, radio. All increasingly unresponsive.

And they fuck with the OS, the keyboard, editing, wifi and Bluetooth have always not worked right. I only put two and two together on some of that recently.

My OnePlus one is still a significantly better phone, except for it not supporting the networks that work at this house - the only reason I got a new phone. Even the famed shit update regime back in those days wasn't really any worse.
Also, apologies for the smudgy bits, having just checked the scanner's surface I see that Jnr has once again been scanning things that shouldn't be put on the scanner. I have cleaned it now.
After my initial enthusiasm I wouldn't recommend a Moto at all now is what I meant to end with. If that somehow wasn't obvious.
You are a star, thanks Hearthly. Will investigate this evening.
Just as soon as I figure out their fucking insane lineup I'm getting a Nokia. A friend at work occurred up a... 5.1, I think? ... for about £140 on offer the other day. He's very pleased with it.

How long in the tooth is your G5?

How long in the tooth is your G5?

Like, a year and a bit.

*Searches posts* yep, less than 18 months.
I may still be in the sweet spot with the G5, at a year and a quarter, but it is still fine and functional. It does feel like it is slowing a little, and internal storage is close to full much of the time. Battery life isn't a full day if you use it a fair amount (hard to quantify what that is - lots of maps, some Skype, web browsing). But it's fine for now.
I may have spoken too soon about the G6 being great. I don't know if it's the phone or Oreo, but I've noticed the Wi-Fi speeds are all over the place.

It's not always this bad.. sometimes I get up to around 6mb, but still not great. Tried various things, included a factory reset last night, but still no joy. :(
My Koolnee had crap wifi. Like, if I went into the bedroom and closed the door it would drop. Annoying.
I'm still using the old Google Now launcher and for some reason they've removed the 'Alt Tab' style feature and it's killing me; I never realised how massively I relied on it until it was gone.
You mean the "recently used apps" thing?

It was updated* for Android P, so it would be odd if they took it away from the launcher.

* made worse, obv

What was the WiFi like on your other knee?

Not took bad on my Krapnee.

Recently used apps is still there, but you used to be able to double tap it to switch between the two most recent apps which I found incredibly useful. Double tapping now does nothing.
Hey, that works on my phone! Thanks, I didn't know.

My phone has updated itself to Android 9 pie.

I think the clock has moved at the top... Or maybe it's new altogether?

Also, the vibration when I type on the keyboard seems quite aggressive now. I might have to turn that off completely.

Further updates as they occur...
The clock has moved from the right to the left. This is to even out the top icons so devices with notches can lose the middle 1/3rd or so of the top bar.
