Is this really what they said? If so, that's brilliant.

North Korea is quickly becoming my favourite country.

Their press releases are awesome.

And tney have updated their webpage

Yes, people starving in the streets while others are summarily executed is great fun!

Are you auditioning for a presenter spot on Trump TV?

Are you implying that seeing issues with North Korea is the same as supporting Trump? Because that would be stretching logic to breaking point.

Knowing our luck, the rockets will veer off course, accidentally hit Guam and all hell will break loose.

It'll give them a chance to try out their missile defense...
Are the missile defence systems any good, though?

It'd be embarrassing for the US if they tried and failed to shoot down the 'warning' launch NK are talking about.
This is where we discover that the Star Wars program of the 80s was never cancelled, does exist and Trump actually has a fully operational space station!
If they did, Mr Trump wouldn't stay on it. He prefers his own gold-plated spaceships, and billing the taxpayer for their use.

Nope.

Lonewolves said a thing clearly taking the piss. I deliberately ignored the piss taking aspect in order to note that such overly positive statements regardless of reality is very much what I have seen on Trump TV
I didn't realise he could just push the button whenever he fancied, I always assumed there'd be military types and suchlike who'd refuse to enter their launch codes on the grounds that Trump is clearly fucking psychotic.

If this is accurate then it's really quite scary.

As Trump has learned in recent months, the man in the Oval Office cannot simply issue a decree changing, say, the US healthcare system. He has to build majorities in the House and Senate, which is harder than it looks. If he wants to change immigration policy, a mere order is not enough. He can be stopped by the courts, as Trump saw with his travel ban. But if he wants to rain fire and fury on a distant enemy, bringing more fire and fury down on his own citizens and many hundreds of millions of others, there is no one standing in his way. Not for nothing does the geopolitical literature refer to the US president as the “nuclear monarch.”

The more you hear of the simplicity of the system, the more frightening it becomes. If Trump decides he has had enough of Kim Jong-un’s verbal threats, he merely has to turn to the low-level military aide at his side and ask them to open up the black briefcase that officer keeps permanently in their grasp. The bag is known as the nuclear “football”. (It gets its name from the code word for the very first set of nuclear war plans: dropkick.) Inside the bag is a menu of options, explained in detail in a “black book,” but also set out in a single, cartoon-like page for speedy comprehension. Trump has only to make his choice, pick up the phone to the Pentagon war room, utter the code words that identify him as the president and give the order. That’s it.
I commend the efficiency of the process
Yes, it's good to know that we can see in the end times of the human race with minimal red tape getting in the way.
Taking back control
North Korea is so last week. He's after Venezuela now.

Next week: Skaro.
Also, /r/TrumpCriticizesTrump is a fun timewasting reddit.
On how easy it is - I read a proposal years ago that said it should be someone nearby with the codes held in a little pill sized implant next to their heart and they carry a large knife with them - if the president wants to use them they just need to use the knife to kill that one person ...

I saw it tweeted again at some point this week let me find the actual wording

Ah , proposed in 1981

Quote:
There is a young man, probably a Navy officer, who accompanies the President. This young man has a black attaché case which contains the codes that are needed to fire nuclear weapons. I could see the President at a staff meeting considering nuclear war as an abstract question. He might conclude: “On SIOP Plan One, the decision is affirmative, Communicate the Alpha line XYZ.” Such jargon holds what is involved at a distance.

My suggestion was quite simple: Put that needed code number in a little capsule, and then implant that capsule right next to the heart of a volunteer. The volunteer would carry with him a big, heavy butcher knife as he accompanied the President. If ever the President wanted to fire nuclear weapons, the only way he could do so would be for him first, with his own hands, to kill one human being. The President says, “George, I’m sorry but tens of millions must die.” He has to look at someone and realize what death is—what an innocent death is. Blood on the White House carpet. It’s reality brought home.

When I suggested this to friends in the Pentagon they said, “My God, that’s terrible. Having to kill someone would distort the President’s judgment. He might never push the button.“
What a great strategist Mr Trump is:

BBC wrote:
US President Donald Trump has tweeted that Russia should "get ready" for missiles to be fired at its ally Syria, in response to an alleged chemical attack near Damascus on Saturday.
"Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and 'smart!'" Mr Trump said in his tweet.

And then later that day, he was open to sorting things out with Russia -

Someone needs to tamper with his Fox & Friends feed. Maybe just switch it out for cartoons.
America is now what's known as a media-run state.
At least nothing of consequence happens when I yell at my TV.
Unsure about what the next step should be. We can't let people get away with using chemical weapons, but just firing a few rounds at sites won't achieve much. Anything further than that, however, risks massive escalations and Russia's involvement in the area and support for the regime complicates the matter further.

All that, and I don't really trust the current US administration and rather think Mr Trump wants something like this to boost his virility.

Thoughts?
We've done absolutely fuck all for years now while Assad's been doing this sort of thing, so what's this new red line that's been crossed? Someone's definitely itching for it.

Quite. We had the chance in 2013 but decided not to.
We should intervene and Do The Right Thing. I think it is amoral requirement of nation states to step up and stop things like this.

Which is what the UN is trying but failing to do.

With One country able to veto anything it's pretty toothless in any real situation. It needs to be somehow independent from countries, but yet still respected by them. I am not sure how you would ever get there.
It's very easy to be cynical about the UN, and the veto power does render many things pointless, but I'd rather have a world with such an institution than one without. At least there is some kind of forum where states can meet at a moment's notice.

That said, when I toured the complex my friend and I had great fun laughing at the hideousness of the kitsch countries had presented to it over the years.

Obligatory Animaniacs song.
It does seem to be progressing remarkably well and remarkably quickly.
Hopefully it won’t turn out to be a scheme by the North or get ruined by Trump.

How bizarre.

BBC story on this. Says the Ukrainians faked it to 'expose Russian agents'.
Something (well... everything) seems amiss there. From ‘special apo(lol)goes to my wife!’ to the Shaggy ‘it wasn’t me!’ expression. It all just seems too...daft?
C'mon, who hasn't staged the 'Being shot 3 times in the back then dying in an ambulance" caper because the 'one final swift half before closing' turns into a missed train, casino and expensive cab ride?
If you had 'Saudi Arabia' and 'Canada', get to the port immediately as your ship might be coming in.
Outside chance on Scotland v Ireland.

To try TO resolve the dispute, FFS. The Beeb is really going down hill.

Meh. It’s fine in informal use and has been for a long time so imo it’s fine now.
But this is the Beeb. I expect them to maintain certain standards.
Ah, Mr Trump wants a distraction. That, or he's taken onboard the advice of seasoned experts and has a clear strategy for the region and .... hang on, it's Mr Trump, isn't it?

You'd hope people might throw things that like back in his face, but I guess not.

Woah. Big moves!
Admittedly, it would be funny if Nuclear Armageddon prevented Liverpool from winning the premier League this year.

I only read this today. So, he HASN'T got his finger on the button, it's a minion in the Pentagon who will actually press it. Or who might say, "Fuck off, Mr President, you're batshit crazy.".

We can only hope, anyway.
Yes, I fully believe that the US military is packed full of principled conscientious objectors, willing to disobey direct orders and probably go to jail for doing so. You can tell that's the case because of all the warmongering.

Or maybe they're all Russian sleepers, who've infiltrated the Pentagon in readiness for just such an opportunity.

This has, of course, already happened in history, albeit on the other side of the cold war:

Just as long as James Blunt still is around to singlehandedly stop WWIII, we'll all be OK!

See NervousPete's discussion of Blunt's skills from way back.
James Blunt could write an opinion piece for a newspaper and call it something like " To The Point with James Blunt - cutting remarks from Britain's sharpest columnist"

I'd go with:

Let Me Be Blunt.
I like James Blunt. He seems a decent human being.
I really like the "Cold" song he did late last year.
