Still can't beat R-Type for that.

Only thing recent and decent has been Omega 5 on xbox live.

Look ma, I'm rhymin' and shits!

Omega 5 also has the advantage that it doesn't become unplayable and joyless half way through, unlike R-Type which can fuck off as soon as I get to the fourth boss.

Fans of Vampire Rage on XBLIG will be interested to know that it's been patched and is now a bit easier.
Radiant Silvergun has just been announced for eggbox at the Tokyo Game Show.
Wooooooooo! Now I get to see what the fuss is all about!
And it has *Online co-op play* ! (just reading Kotaku's stream of the Microsoft conference)

Do we have enough people who would give this a go ?

Okay - thread on the way.
Played it on the Saturn, and it's really good.

A lot messier than ikaruga, I'd say it's much much less about learning the levels or patterns, and more about just being good at shmups.

Some fantastic boss fights.
radiant sivergun.. if there ever was a must buy on xbla...

It seems so at first, but it's actually very methodical and memorisation-based. Imagine a modern, vertical R-Type with a brand-new scoring system. Sorta.

So did Ikaruga, it was both unplayable due to lag as well as not well implemented in gameplay terms.
Just randomly posting my thoughts on the 2 new shmups that came out on Xblah last week. I mentioned Space Invaders: Infinity Gene in the XBLA thread, but worth repeating that it's quite nice, if a little flawed. The Field weapon isn't quite as disastrously game-breaking as I thought it would be, and I'm finding the bonus modes quite a fun diversion. I reckon it's on a par with Space Invaders Extreme for sure.
As for KoF: Sky Stage - unfortunately it's a bit of a poor man's Castle Shikigami, or maybe a really poor man's EspRaDe. It's not very much fun at all, and not helped by the fact that I find some of the enemy bullets to be nigh-on invisible against some of the backgrounds. I thought that kind of thing went out with the Speccy to be honest.
Nobody else think they're worth a purchase?
Already have SI:IG on the iPhone (fir a sixth of the price) so don't need it for xbla. It is very ace though.

Yet to play KoF
Guwange XBLAH

It's French, but I can generally find what I'm looking for. Telecharge is download! :bulb:
Worth noting that the pre-order for Deathsmiles on ShopTo is like 18 quid or something.

15 quid gets you Raiden Fighters pre-ordered as well.
ypu thant package

@grim, would have posted that link, but thought that wasn't forum policy, is it?\
guys, time for high score competition on ketsui?
Anyone played the full version of Crimzon Clover yet? I got mine today and it's... well... it's *really* good.

Is the RFA compilation still coming out? Last I heard on shmups.com, JoWood are in all sorts of financial problems, and they were handling the publishing duties over there. I wouldn't necessarily cough up any preorder cash just yet...

Nah, we gave up on that a long time ago. You could have uploaded it if you'd wanted ;)
Is there any way to turn off the "no continue" option?

ShopTo don't take the money until dispatch and recently dropped the price - hopefully an indication of some life.

I'll let you know if I hear differently.

By default all the games are set to one-credit mode, with no continues, which is as it should be. However, if you just want to marvel at the mind-boggling bullet onslaughts of the later stages you can easily change this by accessing the operator dipswitches as follows:

1. When the game boots up, press F2 to enter the dipswitch menu.

2. Using the joystick/cursor keys and fire button, go to the System section and switch Continues to on (duh).

3. Exit the menu and press F2 again to reboot in normal mode. (Some games might also need you to hit F3 to do a system reset.)

From now on, whenever you load the game it will have continues enabled.

I've had it on pre-order for ages and it just keeps getting delayed - I am not holding my breath.
Just noticed that Deathsmiles has made it out over there. Anyone picking it up?
Yep mine arrived on Friday. Decent so far.
Waiting on the announced iOS version myself. Will, arguably, play better and be unarguably cheaper.
Will it be the Deluxe Edition on iOS, though? This mutha has six distinct versions of the game, like.

Mine should be arriving tomorrow. :)

To be fair, the best version is 'Xbox 360' mode which is just a nicer-looking version of the bog-standard arcade mode.

I'm doing reasonably well on the game (can get to the last level in one credit before it all goes to piddle).

That said, Follet's 'Bath Time!' ending was fucking dubious as anything. Japan basically needs to be on some sort of register.
Deathsmiles was apparently #1 in the charts for last week!*

*On the Xbox 360 budget charts, which means it may have sold as many as twelve copies.
Well, with Muchi Muchi Pork/Pink Sweets currently winging its way towards me, the last thing I really want to hear right now is that another shmup is being released region-free.

Oh, hello Bullet Soul. You're region-free, you say? Damn.
Yeah, man. Last week I bought Deathsmiles, and over the next month or two, I hope to be picking up Eschatos, MMP & PS, Raiden Fighters Aces (if it hasn't been canned) and Seisou Kouki Strania, and the first two are going to cost about £55 each. I am currently unemployed.

Deathsmiles' 360 mode is definitely the nicest one, but the changes to the slowdown mean that the Item Counter recharging technique can't be used in the same way in certain areas, so Arcade is still the one to use if you're playing for score.
So MMP and PS, I've heard of them but I don't know the deal. Are they Cave games and up to the usual high Cave standards? Also, jap text all over the shop or reasonably easy to follow?

All I've really heard about them is that they're considered a bit "bizarre" by shmup afficionados. Some people apparently love them to death, while others think they're a bit crap. Haven't received them in the mail yet, but expect the full, frank :attitude: review treatment when they land on the doormat.*

*or maybe I'll just say "yeah, they're alright I suppose", or something like that.

Won't be able to spend much time with it until tomorrow night or Thursday, but opinions will follow!
(Kind of glad it arrived in a plain brown envelope though).
I haven't played MMP or Pink Sweets yet, Blucey, but the latter is the sequel to Ibara, which was cut very much from the same cloth as Battle Garegga, if you're familiar with those. This means it very probably features a similar medal-collecting scoring system, and all the usual unintuitive Raizing-borrowed elements that go along with it, such as avoiding power-ups and committing strategic suicide to keep the difficulty from soaring sky high. I love Ibara, so I can't wait to check it out, but it's definitely Marmitey stuff.
So after spending a bit of time with the MMP/Pink Sweets double pack, I can heartily endorse it if you've got some spare cash to spend in an extravagant fashion, and don't mind being utterly humiliated by a video game. MMP is the best of the two (I must admit to not really being keen on shmups that insist on dropping a ton of collectables on you, so Pink Sweets is a little bit annoying in that regard), but as a word of warning, it goes completely batshit mental about half-way through stage 2, and having credit-fed it to the end, it pretty much doesn't let up until the final boss.
I don't think I'll ever legitimately see Stage 3 (of either game probably - Pink Sweets get mad hard on Stage 2 as well), but both games are good enough for me to keep trying. And failing.

You're probably not going to get your moneys-worth unless you're a real shmup-nut though, so anyone with a casual interest in the genre would probably be best saving their dosh.
just bought death smiles from zavvi for 14 quid.. it didn't charge me postage to the netherlands, which was odd..

oh and retorg amer has a nice CAVE article
If you like good games and cheap things, mosey on over to Play-Asia and order the Platinum Collection version of Espgaluda II Black Label (due later this month). Like the original port, it's region-free, and at £25-ish costs half as much.
