It isn't in any way "game breaking". If you like shooters and you miss this one because it won't let you shift the viewpoint down by two feet then you are being a legacy-controls-whinge-style massive spacker.

Though I'm fairly sure myoptika at least was just being silly.

It would be a shame to miss out on such a great game because of it though. I can't remember... can you go prone in Crackdown? Or GTA? Or Fable? Or Halo? Or Doom?

You've listed several games I don't like there, but that's not due to prone-age. :)

As it's something that games *can* do quite easily, it seems a silly omission. I'm of course being hyperbolic for effect in calling it game-breaking, but it does help stab the suspension of disbelief with a big stick, though. Sniper rifles and HMGs, for instance, should be fired prone from in the long grass. By law.

Ah, but you CAN sprint, and from a sprint you can go into a Mirror's Edge style baseball slide, to either get behind cover, duck under an obstacle or just look cool.
Which sounds excellent.

Either way, I'm looking for reasons *not* to spend an extra £40 this week on top of my Fallout 3 purchase, damnit!

Not necessarily that easy though, a lot of games when you lie down suddenly show you the ground and the 2d foliage in ultra close up ugliness and the whole thing starts to look a bit of a mess, I'd imagine to keep it looking nice would probably entail a lot of effort.
Well, Far Cry 1 managed it, is all.

...and I want more people to play it with online, dammit!

:D
I might get two games this weekend, but Far Cry 2 will likely not be one of them. I'd rather get Fallout 3 and Dead Space, and play through Dead Space quickly with an eye to trading it in while there is still some value in it.

Hahaha!
Mr Chris - game developer ;)

You'd hate Dead Space - it doesn't even have 'duck'!

[edit]Reminds me of when Stu used to say something along the lines of "having a redefinable controller layout would only take an hour of programming at the most"

Come on - how hard can it be to program in something that makes button X make your sprite fall over?
:)

*That* probably would irritate me a bit, actually. See also - not being able to get over waist high walls due to no "jump" button. :)

Yeah, but Stu's a proper game developer though. :attitude:

EDIT - I'm going to find out that Fallout has no duck or prone button, aren't I?
Yes I was being silly; referring to the thread about BF: Bad Company where I was winding up Dimdums and Pundiebear.
Totally agree on the prone thing, its crap that they omitted it. But the grass is long enough that crouching in it can hide you from the enemy.

That said, I wanted Far Cry 2, and things like dead space, fable 2 and fall out 3 werent on my list, so I bought it.
I need some Xbox vs PC face-offs
I almost didn't get this due to knowingin advance about the no prone issue. It was terribly off putting, because as Lord Chris states, snipers + long grass = good. However, I am glad I got it. It is worth noting that it wasn't an omission, apparently it was a deliberate decision of the developers to "increase realism" because being prone often means your feet are sticking through trees/rocks/walls, etc.
being prone would make you get ticks in the head. Malaria is enough, we wouldn't want to go hunting for anti lyme's disease pills

I'll be honest, if it's on both platforms, everyone here will get the 360 version, pretty much without exception.
because you have shitty pc's, or because achievements + live > sexy time
I buy them on XBox for the live goodness.
RuySan wrote:

Purely because of Live.

Someof us don't have windows either.

That and putting games on my work machine is deadly. Like Peggle which I got yesterday (Gah!) and of course the mac classic Photoshop <include other similar jokes here...>
I don't have a 360, so I bought the PC version. So nyer,

so its just a copy of megaman?
So I ordered Far Cry 2.. It came today and upon looking at it, noticed that it DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE A SPLIT SCREEN MULTI PLAYER!!

This has really pissed me off to be fair.. that's the only reason I bought it!!
Due to TosserStu's kind linky to SoftUK I ordered this yesterday lunchtime and it arrived today and considering it only cost £29 and I live on a rock in the middle of the Irish Sea, I am well impressed.

Not had a chance to play it yet, but I will definitely be using SoftUK again.
I'm thinking of getting the funsquare version of this as soon as it's not more expensive than a week's worth of food. Mainly because I've come to prefer shooters on the funsquare. You can relax more readily, and take turns with a chum. Also my PC couldn't hack a tenth of it, but still.

Is there any reason I shouldn't get this? It sounds very much like my sort of shooter.
Online: It is good fun, quite arcady feel to c.f. CoD4, in that a player can take a shed load of shots and not die, this is IMO the worst part of the game. Also, there is no steadying of the sniper required, annoyingly, this actually makes it harder to aim, because there is no natural movement, so you have to rely on tiny movements to aim at someone's head, tiny movements which are quite difficult to make at times, given the distances involved in the game. Other than that it is very good fun.
Offline: very open feel to the game, can do what you want, it plays almost like Oblivion at times, with the quests and how you get them done. I was chatting to a guy on line the other day and he said, "that the game is so good, it makes you want to go to Africa." And it is quite hard to argue with this!
Even though I've traded my copy in this was after a week of very heavy play, I love it. I will return to complete it at some point in the future I'm sure, about 40 hours or so got me to 50odd% of the story complete, there's a lot of it.

Be warned though you'll pretty much waltz through the first half and have thoughts of starting again on a higher difficulty (I was playing on normal), don't.
I am playing on Hardcore, I have learnt that I never revisit games after completion, so I play them on a harder level to make them last longer.
I think the damage/healing system is better is better on this (online) than in CoD4. However, some of the guns don't have enough ammo in the clip, and the collision detection of bullet - person is not always as good as I would like. As such, lurking and picking people off with an assault rifle is a rubbish tactic, as you'll never get them with just one clip, adn reloading takes ages.

This does, however, all for some awesome kills, as Bobby last night ran right at me, took a load of bullets to the face, went into a baseball slide and used it to duck under the rest of my clip, before coming to rest at my feet and killing me with one blast from the shotgun. Despite it killing me, it was ace to watch.

:)
Africa makes for a very bland setting. Shame cos the technology behind the graphics is amazing. At times it's easily the best looking thing on the system but lets itself down by just being plains with shacks dotted about.

I was happy with this one! :D
I can't slide, no matter how hard I try. I've read the instructions in the manual: they just don't seem to work. Maybe the PC version is broken, but more than likely I'm a huge mong.
On the 360 you just hit crouch as you're running.
You do need to have reached a certain speed though.

Aye, same as the PC version. I can do it on the Xbox, funnily enough. Maybe having remapped controls is messing about with it, like in Fallout ( >:( I want my 'Activate' button to work for leaving the loot screen, too, you dicks, not the default button which is now my Forward key)
That'll teach you for trying to play games on your word processor.

I got owned. Myop for Mod.
April 09 - you can make it happen.

cock off. Consoles are the reason behind all the floaty controls in recent pov games. Bioshock has them, fallout 3 also, and i'm almost sure Far Cry 2 too.
RuySan has any slight on PC gaming set up as an RSS feed, bless.

i wish (or not) i could understand that
Surely as a modern PC owner you don't play any FPSes unless they're blindingly fast reaction tests, and grind-until-you-die-of-Doritos-overdose MMORPGs?

You missed the other possibility:

Perhaps I've only played the wrong flash games, none of them have ever been THAT great.
So am I to believe there may be some bezzie mate action going on with this? If anyone sees me around.. I would appreciate an invite!

I want to shoot you.. shoot you all!

you make it sound like its a bad thing. Are the floaty controls better than the accuracy in games like FEAR or Far Cry?

And i prefer to be called "contemporary pc owner".
I have the sensitivity on Farcry whacked up to max, and it is still slow as a barge in treacle. Is there anyway you can get a mouse to work on the 360?
Nope, thank goodness.
