Doctor Who
The boy/girl in the Blue Box!

It's all right. Some of the second episode was proper old who. The robots standing around that hatch was very reminiscent of older episodes. The foreshadowing of the main baddies was good. But some bits seemed unneeded, the ending was just pointless, and the instant transport of the two winners ridiculous, as was threatening the main guy and him capitulating.

6/10 for me.
The Rosa Parks episode pulls few punches and some scenes were quite uncomfortable to watch in parts. Probably deserves a rewatch to fully take it all in. The Doctor's utter disgust of segregation and having to tacitly endorse it whilst in Montgomery was very well-played. Rosa Parks came across as very strong-willed.

One issue I see coming up, and why I want to rewatch, is about whether the plot inadvertantly denies Rosa her full agency - ie, that the Doctor and the gang set her up to do it rather than her making the stand herself. I don't think it does, as her character is established early on.

Also, the monster of the week being blasted to the past is obviously a seed for something.

Definitely one that's going to be rewatched and written about a lot more than the first two. An excellent episode.

Banksy!
Yeah that was much better. Obviously the subject matter is something that's interesting and important to me, but possibly the best historical episode of Doctor Who I've seen (and I've seen a lot!)

Jodie and the gang continue to be excellent.
I really liked that episode.

Very well played out, and the effects on the ‘coloured’ part of the gang was awful.

Quite powerful, will be watching again later.
That was very good.
A spider that big wouldn't be able to walk on the ceiling
This series is way above the previous ones.
Tonight’s was a little underwhelming.
Watched Episode 5 (lost count!) last night.

I enjoyed the performances of both the main and supporting casts, and rather liked the idea of a cute but ravenous monster, but felt the directing left me without any sense of urgency regarding the situation.

I enjoyed it. Nice sci-fi romp with an Asian Jake Gyllenhall.

About that... does it seem to anyone else that everyone in the new series aside from Graham and The Doctor are Persons of Colour?

Edit: Apart from the evil white racists in episode 2, natch.

True, he was.

I have to say, I am beginning to feel as if I'm being preached at by watching it.

Was it bigger than Lionel Ritchie?

Yes, but it wasn't dancing
Started off good, then lots of running around with very little point, then it ended with a sermon about shit dads.
Doesn't sound much like Doctor Who. Does it still have Daleks in it?

I thought they did well with the script they had.

When they did the list of upcoming guest stars at the end of episode 1 it did seem that white people were in the minority. I can’t say it bothered me but it did look like there might have been a conscious decision behind it.

It’s possible to note these things without it being a rant about poor oppressed white men.
It's ok, Dr Zoidberg is already gammon colour. ;)
Tbf if it's the first time you've noticed it means it's long overdue. Think how PoCs feel when shows are just a sea of mayonnaise.

It's hell, man.
I see what you did there.

'Demons of the Punjab'

That was pretty intense. We don't tend to think about how horrific the Partition was, preferring to see 1947 as when we drew a line and buggered off.

Watching the Doctor choose not to interfere is always pretty distressing, even though the consequences of so doing would have been just as bad for the timeline
Yep, another brilliant episode. I’m actually enjoying the historicals more than the future/space/scifi episodes this season, which is a first.
Yeah. Really enjoyed that.

I can understand it, as you can see from my post above. People have grown up with Doctor Who*. They love it. They want it to always be the same. But it can't be the same, as the world has changed. Sadly, as evidenced in the Capaldi years, it's difficult to portray a message of diversity and inclusion when the message is coming from the mouth of middle aged white dudes. Hence, Jodie. I love Jodie. She may just be my favourite Doctor ever. She's utterly nonthreatening until she's not. She's got a steel behind her eyes that prevents disagreement. And she doesn't kill people.

And she has rainbow on her t-shirt. I mean c'mon! Are they trying to piss off the gammons? Of course they are. Long may it continue.

* Weirdly, our generation, the current 35-45 year olds are about the only group to have not had a doctor during our formative years

I remember watching Sylvester McCoy when I was younger. Were they repeats?

[edit] They were not. I'd have been nine, ten and eleven when they were on.
:this:

And Ace, who I basically remember as being Dave Lister.

You're right (and OLD). I should adjust my age range down to 30-38 ish.

OLD.
I mean, you put some numbers there, and I fit dead into the middle of them.

A 38 year old would still be seven, eight and nine, and they'd have watched it because (whisper) it's a kid's show.
Grim... wrote:

So do I, and I don't have any memories of Doctor Who as a kid. I guess I was classing formative years as early teenage. I remember things like ST:TNG and Quantum Leap being much more important to me than crappy cheap old wobbly set Who.
Quantum Leap came out before Doctor Who had finished (the first time). Star Trek TNG started in the same year as McCoy did.
There were a few more of them, though ;)

Yes it did. What's your point?

Edit: Sorry, I couldn't phrase that without sounding arsey :) I genuinely want to know what your getting at

When did they start showing in the UK though?

(I remember watching Dr who when younger. Paradise towers and the two stories that followed it)

I think you're confusing "our generation" with "me".

As in you. Not me.

With your la-de-dah Sky box (I assume).
How are generations even measured? Oh, yeah, of course.

I'm a millennial! Huh.

You're right. Broad generalisations are ALWAYS wrong ;)

TNG started on BBC2 in 1990, btw.

Bloody millennials. Ruining retail.

They are all too emotional and are good at multitasking.
I seem to remember Tom Baker as a kid then Peter Davidson. I am officially old at 44

It's possible. Tom Baker finished in 1981.

You're older than I thought. I would've had you down as mid-late 30's
Awww thanks.

I would have been 7 or 8.

Who fell off Godral Bank. Was it Peter?
