Gas Guzzling Money Pits
pointless expenses and cars

I will, thank you x
My mobile mechanic came this morning (he knows about cars, too!). It's not the starter, or the battery, it's the sensor that tells the engine to supply more fuel if the engine is cold. Much cheaper to replace than the starter. Yay!

He'll be back tomorrow. Just in time for me to not drive anyway for another 3 weeks.
Lambda sensor then.
That's not what he called it.

Oh, and there's a split in the big hose that puts clean air into the engine.

Mass airflow sensor?
I've googled it now. Coolant temperature sensor.
That’s good then. Very easy to swap on a VAG TDi, not sure about Ford. £7 part last time I bought one.

Mass airflow is dead, man. We're all playing Manifold Absolute Pressure now.

Saw them live, once, they were supporting Spark Knock Sensor.
Costco petrol is currently 99p a litre near me
Fixed Cig lighter socket so Mrs Z can charge her phone in my car via usb charger without me having to unplug mine from the stereos USB socket. Not that we’re driving much :)
Was a blown fuse, Auris fuse box is bloody awkward to get to after the dreamy access of the Leon.
So I finished my first full tank of petrol since the 40mph all island Coronavirus speed limit came in.

Like most cars these days my car shows an estimated range on the fuel remaining that is based on my normal driving patterns (which tends to involve quite a lot of 'brisk progress'), I always brim the tank when I put petrol in and generally speaking the estimated range on a full tank comes up at 290-300 miles.

When I filled it over the weekend, having done the last tank at 40mph or under (a lot of that in fifth gear with cruise control on), it estimated 355 miles.

So I will at least be saving a few quid on petrol.
How much do you actually get compared to the estimated range?

It's not a great estimation.....

* The car said I had 10 miles worth of fuel left when I was in Douglas, so I decided to have a GAMBLE and see if it would get me home over the mountain. About 2/3 of the way over the mountain it decided I had no fuel left and the 'miles left' number changed to a --- and it flashed up LOW FUEL again. A few miles later I was in Ramsey, absolutely brimmed the tank and got just shy of 45 litres into a 50 litre tank. So on what planet did I have ZERO MILES REMAINING? What is even the point of a range indicator if it's going to be so far out?
Washed and waxed (separately) the leccy van today, something that will probably only happen once for the rest of it's life.
And in other news the V6 is now in the mg and we're fabricating mounts for it.
Managed to get it a foot further back than the old 4 pot and a good bit lower. It's completely behind the front axle now which I believe, technically, makes it mid-engined.
How much heavier is the V8 from the original engine? Are you having to beef up the suspension?
V6 and at least half again of the original, maybe more but it's position so much further back in the chassis will hopefully make up for that extra weight.
How low is the sump under it, sump guard time? did you need to chop some shit out the way?
Most of the firewall is gone and will get boxed back in and we'll need to re locate the heater box. The sump lines up perfectly with the bottom of the front subframe which is very fortunate. The props going to be not much longer than a foot!
Exhaust manifold space is extremely tight so that's going to be a challenge.
Side exit exhaust(s)!!!
It's more that the ports are pretty close to the steering column. I recommended a side exit in front of the front wheel but was denied
Side exit flowing over the top of the front wheel, reduces downforce at the front that means you increase downforce at the back.

That's how science works, right?
Yes! We've dive mounts now and there's a bit of writing to do but I beige my wrist so now I have to wait till the 1stb for a new path. I'm in isolation now anyway so I can't even go out and is so cat did, b off will be have to wait a few weeks. Hopefully it'll be fine and the prop will line up ok but we having to cut s section out of the tunnel avatar because the new uj by thugs that is like this big rubber doughnut is too big for the it tunnel.
Have you checked the cabin for exhaust leaks...

Call a bondulance!
Hope your wrist is less beige soon

I think this was meant to say "my welder is broken"

Surprisingly moderate!
So, the Cube won't start... What could be wrong with it? I'm guessing the battery but, the engine makes all the noises like it's going to start but just doesn't turn over.

Could this still be the battery or would it even get that far with dead battery?
98% it's the battery
I’ll give you £50 for it.
Has it been left undriven for a while?
krazywookie wrote:

I like those odds!

Shame that I gave my battery charger to my mom a few months ago. I'll have to see if the neighbours have one I can borrow.
Zardoz wrote:

Yeah, sort of. I haven't used it as much recently for obvious reasons and when I have used it, it's only been to go to Tesco so it hasn't had a decent run for a while.
Probably battery then. If not then Krazywookie will fix it for free. Once his beige wrist is better.
Had a couple of mates that got nicked for drinking battery acid and eating fireworks . One was charged and the other was let off
Treated myself to 28 assorted micro blade fuses. As the temporary one I used to fix cig lighter socket meant the fuse box cover won’t fit. Never seen these teeny tiny ones before. So thoroughly modern!
I've borrowed a battery charger from my neighbour so the cube is on charge now... Hopefully this will sort it.

I’ve just reported you via the police app. You’re not meant to even acknowledge your neighbours anymore
Anyone who's missing being able to watch Motorsport could do worse than watch aus and NZ touring car masters on YouTube, loads of races available. They follow the V8 supercars which are also a good watch but these are all classic muscle cars, way too much power, not enough tyre and no aero which makes for very exciting racing.

Bits of bulk head going back in now, engine and box mounts done and a bunch of engine work done. Heads off and decarboned, fresh oil and filter, good inspection, re lapped the valves and put a clutch on. I need to make a concentric release bearing work for it as there's no room in the trans tunnel for a clutch fork.
I do find this absolutely fascinating! What's the end goal with this Wookie? Are you going to race it or something?
Confused for a sec. Thought your engine bay was full of gravel

Glad someone does! It's my friends car, I taught him to drive in it but he can't pass his theory yet, English 2nd language so he's struggling a bit. I had this spare V6 lying around, he's out of work while the virus is on, a plan formed. He's doing the dirty work I'm just doing the fiddly bits and providing guidance/mockery
