I got my car back today. Hooray. Apparently the total cost was near £1100. Madness and Craziness. I chatted with the truck guy. He was telling me about his Series III he put on a chopped Discovery chassis. He said he'd given up on nice cars when someone did his BMW in and now he drives a honking great ratty 4x4. He's got a point.
I took our 1996 Fiesta to the scrappy today, one day before it's Death Sentence MOT. Got a grand total of £80ish, plus £6 for some old roofing lead.

We now have no car, just push bikes. I'm on the lookout for either a 1.2 Honda Jazz or a diesel Audi A2, but both are frustratingly rare. Still, should lead to some toned thighs.

I knew the 90s Fiestas were a bit spartan but I hadn't realised they used lead for the roof.

An Audi A2? Really?

I've seen a few Honda Jizzes around (almost exclusively in silly pastel metallic colours) and they're supposedly good little cars.
Gosh, that's newer than either of my cars. My 97 Punto is alive and well and my cousin has it. They're miles better than Fiestas.

Last time I scrapped a car I had to pay them £25 to take it. And I know it's worth money to them because I'd paid £100 a month before to another scrappie for one sodding wing mirror.

That's because you're a twit. I can get wing mirrors for a 90s Beemer for less than 50 quid from the Twigworth breakers - and you paid a ton for a wing mirror for a 19th century Toyota WattlenDaub?

No, but considering it was the only scrappie in the country that had one, I'm guessing they were counting on it's rarity.
Finally I grew so fed up with the DENT some chip 'n run 4x4 git left in the front of my car (and a few chips in the paint which looked at risk of rusting), it's currently in the shop being repaired.

Which means I get to drive a Honda Jazz for the rest of the week. Meh.
You get to be both metrosexual and cosmopolitan though. Be sure and park up outside the café for lunch with the ladies and a skinny latte decaf.

Not yet. I did spend a few minutes pushing the button to make the mirrors fold in and out, though.

Get a petrol A2 - the thing is so damned light that the fuel economy is good enough with the petrol engine anyway. That piece of advice was from an Audi dealer friend.
I drove a 96 white passat estate around London for three years which I bought off a mate for £500. Only scrapped it this year as I was bored and I wasn't using it very much so didn't see the point of shelling out £600 on tax and insurance. There was something very liberating about driving a car (in London in particular) about which you didn't give a rat's arse. I'm definitely getting another junker next time - it's moronic financing the freefalling depreciation of shiny metal unless you have more money that Croysus.

A mate bought a very very nice R plate 728 Beemer for £3k which is beautiful to drive and has been completely faultless in the 10 months he has owned it. There's a lot of nice metal out there for very little money and cars are getting more and more reliable.

They don't have to have TVR engines, it just makes them go faster (and sound better). There's about 150BHP in it.

Not just sexy, but under £14k for 150bhp of on-rails cornering that'll return 52mpg if you ask it nicely, and should still be cheap to tax and (hopefully) insure.

The 180bhp Punto Esseesse looks pretty tasty too (although a bit Halfords about it) - building on the 150bhp Punto Abarth with the same turbocharged 1.4l. So I can't help wondering if they'll do the Right Thing and offer the same upgrade on the 500...

Craster - I don't like the base 500 at all, so can't figure out why I like the Abarth version so much.

The new Fiats are built much better than the older ones. I'd even consider getting one now without being scared of it falling apart before I'd got into it.

Maybe so. But the towers of blocks my son makes are better built than older Fiats, and I wouldn't trust one of those to withstand a stiff breeze.

Fiat's aren't particularly badly built - I owned a new Punto for a while and it was fine, build quality wise. The electrics weren't brilliant, but the biggest problem with Fiat is the dealer network. I've said this before - there's no such thing as a perfect mass produced car by any manufacturer - you'll get problems of some description with all of them - what makes the big difference is how good the dealers are.

Most car dealers are cunts, some moreso than others ;)

Most small cars nowadays are pretty good - it's the most competitive market sector, so they have to be. I'd still have a second hand Mini Cooper S with 16" rims over pretty much everything else on the market, though. Or failing that a Focus ST. I really don't think Jap or German cars are worth the premium any more.

Although I must fess up to thinking that the new Puntos are a very good looking small car. I'd never buy one though.

DBSnappas car taste is borked.

I agree with MarkG, Italian cars have great style. But from what I've witnessed and heard of their build quality I avoid them like the plague.
