FTFY

Good stuff, CUS.
So what's that in total then? Yes, I want to know exactly how much you earn. ;)
Grim... wrote:

Just my regular job. But lately, about half the dev team left (I've gone from 'the new guy' to being almost a senior developer, in just over a month), due to unhappiness with lots of stuff. So I think it's partly in reaction to that, and partly because I am good at what I do. But mostly because of people leaving :P

CG: 29k, which is excellent for a PHP development job around my neck of the woods (west midlands). Plus bonuses e.g. I got a £690 quarterly bonus last week. *looks at unused, dusty PS3 under table* I think I'm going to save for a holiday.
Was it worth the angst of the upheaval?

and i'm going to be unemployed soon. So respect the others and don't brag too much
Didn't actually expect you to tell me dude, but still, that's a very respectable amount of cash :D

Do you have student loans coming out? It's the one thing that annoys me most about earning, the more you earn the more of it gets stolen as a damn loan repayment. I think I'm scheduled to pay mine off in about 2021.

Can you code PHP? Looks like CUS's place is going to be hiring soon.
My boss agreed to give me a raise up to 30K a couple of months back, but now I'm going down to 3 days a week instead of 5 so it'll actually end up being 18. D'oh.

Still, good news CUS. You'd never get that off my boss if you came to work here so it's just as well you didn't send me your CV in the end ;)
My student loan is huge and my income is abysmal. I've calculated that at the rate I'm currently paying off my student loan, it'll take 256 years.

SRSLY.

No, but i know something about hydraulics and sewage systems. I hope that can make for my lack of knowledge in PHP.
ComicalGnomes wrote:

*shrug* It's by far the most I've ever earned. Until last August, the most I'd ever previously earned was 18k a year (and that itself was a joy ), so I'm just all delighted, like.

Quote:

I've managed to avoid them until now due to cunningly never bothering to finish my degree. They start next month.

GazChap - yeah, it's bloody good news, especially as I was *this* close to quitting recently :D
I earn 15K, make payments to pay off my MA loan of about 1/2 my take home wage each month and have just had to draw 50 quid cash off my credit card because I have no more money until I get paid in 2 weeks.

Where do these 20K+ jobs exist, cos I've never bloody found one?
ComicalGnomes wrote:

I recently asked this on another forum. As in I posted "How much do you earn, please?". I don't understand why people get all fussy about it!
Hooray for extra cash! Add another zero to the end of that, and you'll be 1/15th as rich as Grim...

I've been paying off my student loan for about 8 years now - I really hope it's done soon. It'll work out as about a 8% payrise when they stop taking it.

I don't get the reticence about this either. My dad refused to tell me what he earned until he retired. And even then he was iffy about it. Bee-zarre.

Wow, I was about to grumble about my £21K job. I don't know how you survive on £15K, the rent must be a hell of a lot cheaper up in Leeds.
Congrats CUS by the way, you massive cunt.
Serious Question: Why don't you guys just suck it up and pay it back in large chunks? It's only 12k at most for you lot, isn't it? 4k a year? I'm sure you all can afford it, waht with having BRILLIANT JOBS from the fact you have a degree, no?
I'm old skool Uni, starting in '97, so only have about 7K worth of debt from doing 4 years of Undergrad study. 1 year of my MA put me 15K in the hole though, so that has balanced it out! I don't have to pay a penny of my Undergrad loan back until I ear more than 25K, HA, like that's gonna ever happen :P
i have a degree and have a miserable wage of 1000€. But at least i don't have to pay 3£ for a pint of beer.
I don't discuss my income with anyone. I think, aside from me, only the bank knows it. And my boss, natch. Beer was 4 Euros in Ireland.
When I went to Uni, they paid me

I started in 97 too, so no fees to pay back. Only took out £7k worth of loans, and paid the last of that off early in one chunk a couple of years ago.

Law school cost £8k for the year, though, which was a pain. I had to get a loan from the bank for that. Thankfully if you get a training contract at a law firm they pay that back for you. Or, if you're doing well at university and get a training contract in the third year (which is what a lot of people do), they pay for the law school fees upfront. They also give you support money for the year spent at law school (of around £2-3K).

I don't know why more people don't do law - it's relatively easy to study at university and at law school, you can arrange to get the law school fees paid for you before you even ever go there, and once you've started work there's no bother about promotion ever. For every year more qualified you are, you get paid more. How's that for an easy ride?

Mali - does Mrs Mali not know?
i tell my wage to anyone who asks, the same with my political preferences and voting history and sexual preferences.

I never understood the fuss about it.

I know also how much is the beer in ireland. I've been there on holidays 4 years ago. Only thing cheap in the country was the car rental (which is compensated by the ridiculous parking costs)

Leeds is one of the most expensive places in the North to live, actually (especially in the studenty area I live in).

In 2006, the year after finishing my MA, I JUST managed to scrape through the year, working full time on a per annum wage of 8.5K, NO JOKE. I am skilled at living on absolutely fuck all beyond mere human capabilities. Co-op skip across the road from us usually has lots of loaves of bread in it on a Sunday night :P

I think she's got a fair idea but not exactly. That and I often leave payslips around the house de to my unique filing system. Mind you, I was having a flick through new Scientist yesterday, and I'm still fucking amazed at how poorly scientist are paid in this country, which is why I'm getting out of science. Might go back to college.

Well, it isn't, so there.

The study of law combines politics, philosophy, pedantry and arguing. What's not to like?

The practice of law does rather depend on what area you work in though. Tax lawyers, for instance, may as well be accountants.

London's a good place to start.

Lots of people do Law? At least they do here at Manchester. Also; I hear it's a massively shit world, especial if you work for the big corporations. You have to work 12 hours a day and be willing to stab every other sod in the back for months on end, only to find out you didn't get that promotion, then you jump off the top of the building, etc.

my sister is a lawyer, and she looks pretty much bored all the time.
BTW, congrats CUS :D I'm not jealous, honestly. Pleased for you. I'm just from the North West, whinging about being broke is a natural, instinctive reaction :P

You can choose not to work for one of the big City firms. There are lots of lovely high-paying law firms around where you can happily leave at 5.30 every night. Actually, I know people at big City firms who do just that. Honestly, the marketing people at the multi-national cosmetics company I used to work at worked longer hours than most lawyers.

Lawyers just whinge a lot if they have to stay late once a month. I'm very happy with the life, and in 6 years of lawyering can count on three hands the number of 12 hour days I've worked.

so its seems everyone except americans complain about that. Scientists here rely on 1 year scholarships so you can never make much planning on your life. The scholarships aren't much either. About 1300€/month i think

Precisely, and you have to work twice as many hours (including commuting) to earn it. Why bother?

Joking, dude.
I started on £12k in this job, and I've got up to £23k in two years. Makes me wonder where I could be if I hadn't drifted around for 2 years after Uni desperately trying not to make any life decisions.

My student loans are similarly gargantuan, but I've simply decided to ignore them and focus on paying off the mortgage. They're just another little nibble from my pre-tax paycheck.

Depends where you live, and what you do with your time.
A good chum lived in Bedford and paid £400 a month rent for a two-bed house. He earned £30k in London (as opposed to doing the same job in nearby St. Neots for £19k), and his commute was an hour, each way.

Indeed. I earn a fortune... MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!

That said, I live in London and thusly it feels like I earn a pittance.
Nested quotes ftw, RuySan.

The original question was rhetorical really, but I know what you mean :) I have friends earning a fortune in London, but it depends what you are experienced in. I work in Higher Education, so working in London will just get me a couple K more, nothing really considering the extra cost of living there. But mainly, I don't want to live in the city, I'm too much of a country kinda guy. Give me 20K anywhere remotely nice (job in Brighton pleeeeeeeease!) and I'll have my post grad loan paid off in 3 years then I'm free.

Like I say, I'm more whinging for the sake of whinging, I get by ok :) It's lucky I have no real expensive vices other than the occasional computer upgrade and I'm ugly as sin so don't have to worry about the expense of a girlfriend :P
