It looks like you can just let the ship sit at the bottom of the screen and it never gets hit.

Yep! I figured this out just a moment ago myself. I have fed back to the developer.

Heh, I only noticed because someone came to the door after I started playing so I just walked away from the keyboard and came back to find it miraculously undamaged.

I go to the website.. click on the grey play triangle.
Music starts. Hitting enter on either 'play' 'tutorial' or 'Credits' Just gives me 'continue' or 'reset cart'

Yeah, Z and X are the controls.
If you have a gamepad plugged in it seems to want to use that. That's what I found anyway. Nice little game!
