If you go to "Advanced sharing options" you can share the PC audio without sharing your screen, too.
That’s perfect Grim..., thank you, because I realised last night that if I played a song through my laptop they’d probably see the title and singer on the media player 
You can get round this by just sharing one particular app (say, PowerPoint) and click to your music player without anyone seeing it.
Does this sound like something I could do, or would I make a very obvious hash of it?

You'll be fine! There may be no reason to share your screen at all for a music round - just play the music, they'll hear it perfectly and then be completely unable to say who sung it or what it's called (wait, no, the latter bit is just me).
