It’s like saying you can’t watch the Mandalorian without seeing 11 films and the Clone Wars/Rebels cartoons. Yes there are some cool nods to the lore and returning characters, but can you enjoy it just on its own merits? Yes.

I would also recommend that people watch the Star Wars films before watching The Mandalorian. At least the original trilogy.
I would recommend that too. But it’s not essential.
You could watch paint dry and suffer the same excitement as The Mandlorian.

It gets better
The paint drying or the Mandalorian?

I thought it started well, sagged in the middle and ended strongly.
I've just noticed that the word "Picard" also sounds like someone saying "pick hard". This could be used for comedic purposes. For instance combining it with a nose (rude), or a bottom (quite rude). If anyone would like to use this in conversation get in touch and I'm sure we can arrange some sort of licensing agreement.
Also sounds like a magician in a rush.
Or a vegetable playing a delightful game of whist or gin rummy. Obviously this has a less commercial application than my original idea, so I will not be developing it further.
Hard-bitten cop John McClane has two problems: Hans Gruber won't stop texting him, and he has crippling constipation. Armed with a pencil, there's only one way his day's gonna get better.
Vegan pastry.

Can we all agree that swearing has no place in Star Trek?

It's so jarring.
Given that I've not even noticed, no.
I like it, I think it works well where it's used.

We can not. People swear; people in believable well-written fiction can swear as well.

It’s fucking awesome
I dunno, I remember thinking that it sounded really forced in STD.

An unfortunate acronym.

Me too
I thought it was great. It might be because I have a crush on Ensign Tilly though.

Well, that was obviously the case also.
We'll skate over Mali's EPIC WRONGNESS up there and stick to Picard - cor, this is a bit good, isn't it? Mr Stewart has definitely developed a strong "troubled old man" schtick (c.f. Logan). Very well shot, brilliantly atmospheric. I will watch more of this.
I think it's...'fine'
My only complaint so far is his rubbish choice in dog breeds.
I'm going with "quite good"

That bad?

mega heh

That did make me chuckle...
I'm enjoying it, and I really like the intro music and opening sequence. It's got quite polarised reviews on imdb tho and in my easily-swayed nature I find myself agreeing with both the good reviews and the bad ones (or at least, elements thereof).

How much of it is him acting and how much is just that he's a real old duffer now anyway?
I think I hate this show.

I don't even want it to just be the same as TNG, it should obviously try to push things forward, but feels like they're making the least interesting choice at every opportunity.

Furthermore, how many of the best Star Trek stories have involved a threat that might destroy all life in the galaxy, or another massive galactic scale stakes?

DS9 obviously dealt with large scale war, but focused on showing the human cost and personal experiences in that conflict.
Have you watched all 58 seasons and 28 movies to prepare though? It’s important you do this

Yeah I've watched all of Star Trek.
And you still don’t like it? Not a fan then

Yeah I've watched all of Star Trek.

Maybe you should start over from the beginning again to double check.

Kinda tempted tbh. Or maybe just DS9.
That episode where Picard dresses up in fancy dress was a bit shit in places.

Also watching old people be a bit old and lightly reminiscing about old times makes me feel old.
I've lost interest.

DS9 is not true Star Trek, it is more B5 in my view

Get. The Fuck. Out.
Deep Space 9? Hollyoaks in space, more like.

I like it, it is just not the clinical white ships in space.

DS9 is one of my fav sci-fi...

Just not true Trek :P
Well I like DS9 because it's like it's pushing Federation ideology to it's limits, seeing how far the Utopian ideals can bend when thrown into a murky situation with no easy answers.

It's like the opposite side of the coin to TNG.

You need both though.

I think I have a bit too, now :(

I fell asleep in this recent episode and woke to find it'd finished, so I 'rewound' back to roughly where I remembered seeing... and then fell asleep again.

Riker looked old and Troi looked funny and it seemed kind of forced to me. While I still think Riker's pretty cool, there's a danger revisiting old things in that they might turn out to be worse then we remember them :'(

Not a good time for me to click on that link - I need to get to work! :D
I am still enjoying Picard, I like the slow paced feel to it.
It's not what I hoped somehow, I guess different writers or whatnot but Picard doesn't even feel like the same person. Special guest stars popping in and out every week. I dunno, it all just seems like a bit of a mess.
Yeah their whole thing about Picard not being good with kids is bizarre because he lived a whole life and had kids and grandkids and was shown to have good relations with the children.

Maybe the writers of Picard never saw that episode of TNG.

Edit: just one example of many. It's not even plot inconsistencies that bug me, is character ones.

I can even accept that characters change over time, but a lot of this stuff is without rhyme or reason.
I have a kid, does not mean I am good with kids :)

As I have got older I have got less tolerant.. I can see what they are doing..
