Picard

I'm enjoying this enough to keep watching it, just. But jeez, as someone not keen on actors having a go at accents unless they're really really good, episode 8 was TEETH-GRINDINGLY painful. Oh look! He can do Irish, and Scottish! No. No, he can't.
I'd almost forgotten this, i'd have two or maybe 3 episodes to catch up on.
9th episode had some elements I liked, but yeah it is pretty shit.

Don't watch carnival row!
I finished the season. The writers of Picard are absolute cowards.

Don't even really know where to start with my problems with it. I think what they were trying to do was inherently unambitious, and their execution on it could be generously described as clumsy.
Man, the days of watching previous star treks so that I could watch it have been wasted. WASTED!
I thought it was good.

EDIT: j/k clearly I ain’t watching this fanboy spaff

Lol at least you got to watch the good star trek.
I also thought it was good.

I liked the lack of big white shops fighting in space.

Felt more intimate with some nods to the past.
I'd tune in to watch SHOP WARS.

Sainsbury's vs Waitrose, only one can prevail.

Tesco has the mass, but I think the unpredictable chaos of Aldi would make the latter a tricky foe.

Lidl is clearly the millennium falcon
Tesco is a star destroyer
Asda is no moon
Co-op is an x-wing and Scot-mid is a tie fighter
More intimate?

It was another Galaxy-destroying level threat, full of explosions, shootouts, sword fights, and people shouting "Fuck".

It was the least intimate version of Star Trek possible.

Edit: Wouldn't be so bad but the showrunner literally outlined what would have been an actual intimate version of of the show but said that people weren't "ready for it"

That, or at least some kind of middle ground between that and what we actually got would have been far more interesting.
Breaking Bad in Spaceships fuelled by Cats with Nathon Fillion and Gillian Anderson.
Full disclosure, I haven't watched a single episode of Picard, but I do like THE CRITICAL DRINKER and he's reviewed Season One.

He's a Scottish guy who pretends to be a bit drunk when he reviews things.

Yeah he is mostly on the money. I can accept (and actually expect!) that the character Picard has changed over time, but yeah he is basically unrecognisable.

I don't hate Discovery completely, it has had some great elements, but on the whole it's clearly a jumbled mess, and Picard just repeats a lot of the same mistakes and doubles down on them.

There is a contingent of idiots in the fanbase that object to Star Trek "going woke", which is clearly just people who didn't understand any Trek over the years, and that's not why modern trek is a shadow of it's former self. That video does dip a little in that direction, and I wanna be clear that Trek has always had progressive ideals and made consistent, if sometimes clumsy, attempts to advance diversity on TV, and put thought into representation. That's not the problem with Picard or Discovery.

RE: The Picard Ending
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
I think my biggest problem with the ending is that it doesn't feel like certain characters think synthetic life is inherently less worthwhile than human life, it feels like the writers think that, and didn't even make any effort to justify it within the story. Feels remarkably closed minded, and not reaching out to a higher level synthetic life form out of fear of what will happen would be like wanting to never achieve warp speed for fear of contacting other biological life forms.

Not 100% a disaster, but probably like 90% a disaster. For me, at least.

Yes, as it basically JL in Space ship, with 5 others. There was no big space battle, other than a mexican stand off. I might have to re-watch it if i missed the battle..

I'm certainly on the edge of my seat waiting for more exciting tales of "Things Kovacs Didn't Do".

Do you want it as a blog, vlog, or youtube?

I expect it as a YouTube video showing you typing it into Notepad. Nothing else will do.

So you don't like YouTube reviews, and you found his pretending to be drunk annoying, which I explicitly referenced in my post introducing the video.

I'm not sure I can give you much more help than that to make an informed decision, man.

He means an informed decision as to whether to watch the YouTube video or not.
Glad you explained..

Well, you could watch the show.

For all you know the not-drunk man was talking bobbins.
"I haven't watched it but here's a long YouTube video anyway" is peak fuckin' Hearthly.
I've not watched the show or the video!

Do I win a prize?
My Netflix watch list and Amazon play watch list are already decidedly into the realms of 'never going to fucking happen', so there's no point adding anything else to them. They operate on a 'one out, one in' basis now.

Plus RedLetterMedia and Angry Joe aren't big fans of Picard either, between them and The Critical Drinker, I usually get a pretty good idea if I'll like something or not.

(TBH I sometimes find reviews more interesting than the actual content, for example, the new Star Wars Trilogy which I haven't seen a single one of, but know everything that happens in all three of them.)

Nearly a third really, if we're counting.

Even better... :)
For me, I feel the series sagged quite heavily just after halfway but the the last two or three episodes picked up, and I was quite excited by it again. Overall I'm glad I stuck with it, even if the 'tone' or the 'feel' was quite variable.

Watching a show like this makes me realise how much I enjoyed Star Trek (TNG) but also aware of how hokey a lot of it was - the good was really good the the bad was pretty damn bad.
