No, it's the gen before that.

Nah - current Gen is still PS4 and Xbox one , last gen is PS3 and 360 - *next* gen is PS5 and Xboxy

I realise that GTA5 is a crazy money maker but to kick off the whole even with a game that came out 7 years ago on the previous generation seems a bit odd

Yeah, and GTA V come out on the X360/PS3 so his point stands.
Anyway, fuck all that noise, full on Astrobot sequel is a thing so who cares about anything else?
There's a new entry in a long running and annually refreshed fucking sports franchise!? Well shitting hell! Take my money!
So the console has to stand up somewhere? That's a bit annoying.

Have you seen the Microsoft Breadbin?
Anyway nothing there has got me hyped, I was shown nothing that I would have been surprised to see running on a PS4. I know 4K 100fps etc. but meh.
Very underwhelming and it looks ugly. Sony has phoned this one in, it seems.

At least that's just a black rectangle.

Nope. Pic of it sideways.

Ah, that's something at least.

I'm sure that something will come out at some point that means I want one but I don't think I'd be wanting to play any of this lot even if they were on PS4.
Anyway, it started off slow with Rockstar quad-dipping across 3 gens and PC but the final 4 games looked terrific:

That Dishonoured looking game looked great.
Horizon 2 looked great.
Resident Evil 8 (sorry Resident eVIIIage or something) looked fucking fantastic and carries on where 7 (sorry Resident eVII) finished. I was worried they might ditch 7 and return to something more normal for the series but it shows they’re sticking it out. It’s even got Las Plagas vibes too!

But then...
Fucking DEMONS SOULS remake. And that’s when I knew I was getting a PS5.

And also Bugsnax because Bugsnax.

Microsoft must be weeping tonight after their piss poor outing.
It looks a bit like the old Sky+ box
Anyway - PS5 day one and everyone in BEEX will be playing car darts and moaning that Grim... should have settled on the 3 spot instead of pushing for 5
I think it looks cute as all hell.

The earliest game release was "fall 2020" and that's potentially only four months!
There'll not be any in stock in Europe until easter
Waiter! These chips taste of piss!

:DD I'm never going to buy one anyway so it matters little to me

People are allowed to criticise a thing you're interested in.
A practise colloquially known as "pissing on your chips".

Right? Fuck your shitty black boxes.
It’s not about what a console looks like it’s about how free the games are.
So, other than better graphics, what's new? Genuine question, because I'm not watching one presentation

It'll just come down to the games really, same as it should always be for a new console generation IMO, no reason to jump on board early doors.

Both the new consoles are packing substantially more CPU power than the current generation, maybe that can be leveraged in some fashion for larger and/or more detailed game worlds, although looking at what's been possible on base PS4 hardware with the likes of Death Stranding, you have to wonder.....

Unreal Engine 5 offers some impressive 'new shinies' capability, although despite being a mega-nerd for this sort of thing, watching the UE5 tech demo running on PS5 hardware, I wasn't exactly blown away.

Wait and see will be my approach, I'll probably end up with both the new XBox and a PS5 at some point, but it'll be on the basis of 'I really want to play Games X and Y' rather than buying them because they're new and shiny.

A new “media” remote control to lose down the sofa.

Ooohhh I had one of those for my XBox 360. It was pretty shit and I never used it.
I had one for the PS3 and it was pretty useful when that was my main media thing. Was annoyed that they never supported it on PS4.
Will it play compact discs?
MaliA wrote:

No. It won’t play records, eight-track, laserdiscs, minidiscs, cassettes, vhs or Betamax either.

Oh and don't forget the SSDs will mean massively shorter loading times. The one thing that strikes me when I game on console these days is the pretty appalling loading times, so having an SSD as standard will be very nice.

“Please rewrite the current front page of any given gaming website and post it here for me” is the bold new take on “please google this for me” that 2020 needs!

That's an annoyance and a red mark in the ledger. You'd have thought they would have fixed that by now, given they invented the CD.

I'm glad you're onboard!

New triggers, faster everything. I'm whelmed. Much as I was for the new Xbox.

CDs are dead tech, grandad

I prefer them to vinyl. Don't have to get up so often.
A bit sad about this. I can get over the looks but it is absolutely huge.

It would not fit anywhere in my setup. I wouldn't even have the space to stand it alone.
Don’t you have massive PC builds all over the shop?
Where they belong yeah.

I couldn't stand it where the 1x is now because there is a amp going there that pre amps my surround system. There's no room to stand it on the floor either, due to the front speakers and the NAS in the corner. I mean, that thing has literally sized me out.

I'd be really bummed about it but tbh? I was always going to get the X any way. It's a much better media machine, especially when you have the dumb monitor like I do (it doesn't even have a tuner). Plus TLOU2 comes out next Friday and isn't a PS5 exclusive.

Going by how little (well, none) I have used the PS4 pro since finishing TLOU DLC (and tbh the only thing I have used it for apart from Astro Bot) it was probably a bad idea any way.

Edit. The Xbox is going opposite the PS4 pro when I remove and hide the external HDD caddy.
It'd fit behind TV
He can’t move those Xbox games, you cray!?

Yeah, baffled why they dropped them for PS4.
Satsuma wrote:

That's where the xbox is going, once I take off the hdd and hide it. It won't fit as is. There is no way the PS5 would fit there.

It isn’t a sequel but a tech demo of sorts to doss about with. But it does come preloaded on the PS5 appparently.

Because your TV remote works via HDMI-CEC.

It does but the PS3 remote had buttons that matched the prompts on screen, plus things like the playstation button etc. I guess they had their reasons but I thought it was just bluetooth anyway so I was expecting it to just work.

Oh, that's disappointing.
Grim... wrote:

Except when it doesn’t, because HDMI-CEC is the actual fucking devil. And it doesn’t have enough buttons anyway, no menu button for one.

I'm sure I've managed to find equivalents on the remote of all the controller buttons in the past, though one of them was non-obvious. That said I've got a Sony TV so possibly they support it better than other manufacturers.
Bamba wrote:

To make my LG C8 TV send "home" or "menu" to the remote device - as opposed to its own menu system - you need to press a badly labelled button near the 0-9 keypad, which displays a pop-up strip on the bottom of the screen, which includes (amongst others) Home and Menu. You select them with the d-pad, press the OK button, and it sends the single button press.

Could be an LG thing, I admit. Can't remember how my old Sony managed this.

I also get ghost signals. I have a 2018 TV, a 2019 soundbar, a Switch, a PS4, and a 2020 model nVidia Shield. All pretty modern devices, nothing obviously old and janky. So it's fucking annoying when they get caught up in loops where some device keeps sending Power Up signals right after I push Power Off, so they turn off, then right back on again. Or they get caught in loops where you select an input and it immediately flicks away to something else, presumably because the second device generated a "hey I just powered up" signal. This happens every few weeks, it's not even particularly rare.
