Shush, would you? He's trying to keep that on the DL.
Fucking hell, Gaz.
As someone shilling for Big Pocket, I heartily endorse this conversation.

Likewise, as someone shilling for Big Shilling.
I currently have a shilling window, if anyone wants me to promote anything.

I’ll give you a shilling for your window

I hope you get a mighty big shilling for that.

I was pretty close
Close but far enough away to avoid paying me royalties. Well done.
A pretty balanced opinion piece here IMO.

I am surprised they didn't go in at an agressively low price.

I'm still pretty tempted, but I'm worried about the long-term support.

Google Wear was The Next Big Thing (TM) and Google Daydream was The Next Next Big Thing (TMTM) and they're both dead.
Heh, the big privacy outcry about Google glass and now everyone sticks cameras to their cars

I wonder if their thinking is that an aggressively low price from the start will overwhelm them with users, so they're not really trying to go mass market until they have been running it for a while.

But yeah I agree the model as presented is probably not attractive to a mass audience.

That pretty much nails it in the first panel.
I have to agree. The Xbox service makes more sense as it lets users access things that they already own. Add in cloud saving and I can see the appeal of moving from console to phone or browser.

Stadia games to cost as much as their Xbox or PlayStation counterparts.
It probably won’t be for me, but it’s interesting. I’m not sure if I’ll even buy a new PlayStation or Xbox until long into its life next time around. PC and Switch pretty much has me covered for now.
Are Google funding this with all the extra fucking ads (no, not those fucking ads) YouTube is filled with?

I'm getting ads 2 at a time, more often than not unskippable 6s ones but even 20s ones, all over the place - before, *after* and increasingly frequently during videos; a 15 minute video will now show me something like a dozen ads, maybe more.
I might be wrong but aren’t the Youtuber creatoror’s the ones who say where the ads play?

Yes. And the length of the ads, too.

Edit - here's the docs from the YouTube Creator Studio site.
I'm not allowed to see that apparently, but 2 ads before a video, 2 ads after, and 2 ads every 3 or 4 minutes is definitely new. I don't mean 'an ad every couple of minutes' I mean 'an ad followed immediately by an ad'.

The channels I'm seeing it on I wouldn't expect to put ads *mid-word* either. Maybe I've got some novel malware on my phone.

Have you tried not watching the worst awful bullshit channels?
I don't think you understand Cleetus.

Share the video and we could tell you.
Yeah it's definitely YouTube's side with the ads, all the channels I watch have had ramped up advertising applied in the last few months, it seems unlikely they've all made the same tweaks to their advertising profile so I'm calling Google out on it.

I wouldn't mind quite so much except all the ads are so fucking badly targeted and completely irrelevant to me, and yet I let Google track me on every device all the time and harvest all the data they can fill their boots with, and YouTube still chooses to show me ads that are so far off target it's borderline laughable. At the minute it seems convinced I'm really interested in some sort of investment banking opportunity, for reasons I can't even begin to explain.

I remember once I searched for 'Iceland pies' to demonstrate the amazing fat content of these remarkably calorie-laden steak pies to a chum at work, and YouTube then showed me ads for holidays to Iceland for fucking MONTHS, despite the fact I have no interest in travelling whatsoever and nothing about my device usage would point in that direction. Really? That's as advanced as their analytics are?

The ads don't even register with me now, I just wait for 5 seconds to click 'Skip Ads', or if it's an unskippable ad I think about something else for 15-20 seconds until it's finished.
A GLOBAL LEADER IN CHEMICALS!

Errrr, great, I guess.

Glad it's not just me. It's not A video, Grim... It's MOST videos. It's quite possible other people wouldn't be seeing it (yet) anyway since Google do targeted trials of things don't they? If everyone was seeing this I'm sure there'd be uproar.

Anyway, this turned into more of a thread derail that I expected. Sorry.
Why don’t you post the video(s) that you’re referring to and we’ll see if we get the same then (I’m sure we will)?
Because it's not a specific video it's my general YouTube experience now?

However, try this one https://youtu.be/Ti-ZlzqSJNM in the YouTube app on Android I guess.

No adverts at all for me. Before, during or after
That’s weird, I can see the yellow marks that indicate 5 adverts.
Maybe they’re targeting people who would benefit from more ads

Poorly SEOptimised Title.
YouTube decides not to show ads depending on your watch patterns. If two people watch the same video, one may see fewer adverts if (for example) they recently saw a lot on a different video. However it can never show you more adverts than the video creator has enabled.

That video does indeed have five midroll ad slots that have been added by the creator (the yellow markers), in a video less than 20 minutes long. I didn’t see any ads but that’ll be because I was skipping around, not watching it right through. I think that’ll always suppress midroll ads. I did see a six-second “bumper” ad play before the video.
None after? Literally every video now has at least 1 video after, for me. Maybe it's because I keep starting videos between alarm snoozings on weekday mornings.
One thing that I'm surprised they still haven't even got remotely right is volume mix between ads and videos.

I'm down in the kitchen right now and I was playing a video on YouTube about Google Stadia, the guy records his videos at sensible volume levels so the dynamic range of everything he does is pleasant, I'm sure we're all aware of the VOLUME WARS?

So I went out into the utility room at the back of the kitchen to check on a couple of things (I had the volume at a nice level so I could still hear his voice), and an ad kicks in (mid sentence, natch), and its volume level is so far off the scale compared to the video it's embedded in that I couldn't get back to the kitchen fast enough to turn the volume down and then skip past the advert as fast as I could, I literally have no idea what the advert was except it was making a massive noise that I didn't want at all after midnight and it can fuck off.

Iceland Pies = Holidays to Iceland. For Months.

Volume Balancing = Who needs that shit, right?
Stadia Product Director is asked in a Reddit AMA 'What happens to our purchased games if Stadia shuts down?' He tells people to trust Google on their track record of supporting their services.

The site 'Killed By Google' lists lots of stuff that Google has nuked over the years.

Jim Sterling noticed this.

Yeah, that was a rather silly thing for them to say.

I can't believe they didn't have a better prepped answer for that.
Like Mr Sterling says: they can't have a better answer. They can't say "oh, sure if Stadia fails you'll be able to download your games" because the followup question will be "...why can't I do that anyway?" and they certainly can't say "well, you're fucked then!" because...duh.

So the only answer is "Trust us, we're Google!"
"We'll refund you."

Ha! Like they're going to say that.

They're still incapable of serving up even remotely relevant YouTube ads to me, like I'd trust them with my game collection.

Do they not have that many advertisers, or are their algorithms really that shit?

/reminds self to start the YouTube Malgorithms thread, (total ripoff of the Private Eye thing), as a constant reminder of how hilariously wrong it gets targeted content to someone who explicitly made the choice to sign in to every single device he uses and let them harvest as much data as they want.

I've started watching some of the ads now just for the lolz. (Which won't work by the way, as it's so magnificently wrong that I'd be more likely to invest in a Saharan Desert Sand Ownership Opportunity.)
Yeah, we all saw you in you S.D.S.O.O hat at the cricket, though.

That's not how any of that works.
