They were bastard-hard games, but I was very fond of the Commandos series. Richly detailed maps to manouevre your squads around and weedle out opportunities for subterfuge (because all-out combat was always a death sentence).

I've not played anything like it for many years.

So I was interested by Shadow Tactics when Mike Bithell called it one of his games of last year:

It's on sale on Steam at the moment, but that's still a price point that's too rich for my blood given my backlog. But thought it worth highlighting to anyone who may have fond memories of Butcher and the gang.

God I loved Commandos - I only played the first one but it was amazeballs. The level with the massive train cannon sticks in the memory.

I own the cowboys version (Desperadoes I think?) but have, shamefully, never played it. There was a Star Trek game in the same mould as well, that I played a few levels of and enjoyed.
I love turn-based squad shooters but Commandos required a little too much subtlety for me. I was a huge fan of the earlier Jagged Alliance and Silent Storm games.
Commandos wasn't turn based, tho. Like, even a little bit.
Silent Storm was great, mind- until you got a few levels in and then it just broke any PC because of the amount of time it took to process each turn.
