What prompted the upgrade?

When we move, I'm going to want a second PS4 for a man cave. I don't see much marginal value in upgrading a normal to a Pro but when it comes to getting an entire new one I figure the Pro has enough going for it, particularly in VR (which needs all the horsepower it can get.) We had two iPhone 6s to trade in and at CEX they're almost a straight swap for a PS4 Pro. I didn't want to wait on getting rid of the iPhones, so I did the exchange now, even though I don't really need the Pro at the moment.
VR was my driver for upgrading, though it's impossible to say how much it helps because I had it pretty much right from the start and have never played any of the same stuff on a vanilla machine for comparison. The super sampling mode is potentially really nice if you've got a 1080p set and are playing a game with 4k support, which I haven't done yet I don't think. In your scenario picking up a Pro is a total no brainer either way.
I think so too. I have a 1080p TV with no HDR, so I’m not expecting to be blown away by any visual improvements... at least until I change the TV. Obviously I’ll be shopping for a 4K when I build the man cave.

You're probably aware of this already but I'll mention it just in case: the v1 PSVR box doesn't pass through HDR for some fucking stupid reason so bear that in mind when you get your new TV and set it all up.
Yeah, it's stupid.

I have to say that I noticed zero difference in VR when I moved to the PS Pro, but Gaywood will tell you it's because my eyes are broken.
Yes, indeed. That little shitshow is for Future Doc to figure out... somehow.

How much stuff did you play before the change for comparison?

Also, bear in mind that with VR more horsepower can translate to higher frame rates and thus less nausea rather than like visibly better shinies or whatever.

The single game I played that spanned my upgrade seemed to be massively easier to play for long periods after the move to the Pro; though that could easily be attributed to a placebo effect or just better VR legs on my part.

In conclusion: I have no strong argument either way.

HDMI switchbox? I don't know the technical reasons why pass through HDR doesn't work but it should be possible to just bypass it entirely I'd have thought.

You need a splitter to go down that road.

The problem is that the passthrough box is only HDMI 2.0. As I understand it, when a HDMI chain (eg. PS4 -> PSVR box -> amp -> TV in my case) boots up, the handshaking process negotiates an overall connection based on the weakest link in the chain. If that's the PSVR, the whole chain runs at HDMI 2.0. You need HDMI 2.1 for the expanded colourspaces that HDR needs. So, no HDR.

You can in theory do

Code:
/-> amp -> TV (for HDR flat games)
PS4 Pro -> splitter
\-> PSVR -> amp -> TV (for VR games)

But it's fiddly and expensive and chews up two amp inputs.

In other news my many year old Sony amp isn't HDMI 2.1 either. In fact it's only HDMI 1.4. Hurrah!

(Aside: this isn't entirely Sony's fault. The HDMI 2.1 spec was only finalised late last year, so it didn't exist when PSVR was released. But in general the specs process has been really bad around 4K and HDR, which is why there's a mess of different specs that are all incompatible with each other ie. HDR10 vs Dolby Vision. It's possible to buy a box that only outputs one and a TV that only supports the other and end up with no HDR. Like I said, it's a mess.)

Ouch.
MrsDoc wants to co-op it [1], so here we are. I can flog the disk copy to CEX for £36 though.

[1] our PS4s are both in the living room at the moment, so she's playing on the TV and I'm playing on a virtual screen using PSVR. It works alright though!

It's an innovative solution, I'll give you that. Playing a new and good looking game on something less than half the usual 1080p is something I would absolutely not be up for though.
It’s temporary. I only have one headset so we have to be side by side to play. I’ll get another and move the old PS4 to the bedroom.
On which note

<39.50> HyperX Cloud Stinger

My word, headsets are surprisingly spendy. I had to talk myself down to this one. But we least this can be used for the PC as well, in case we get bitten by the Factorio bug again or something.

Edit — it also had the significant advantage of being in stock at Prime Now.
No kidding. I got the htperx cloud II.

Veryy nice, but at £75, I made sure it wasn't some plastic thing that had a habit o snapping.
I've got a set of Turtle Beach P11s, which I bought for the PS3 originally, but are very good for PC, too.

I have the official PS4 ones being criminally underused at the moment. :(
I'm pretty sure they have a Bloodborne "theme" (or whatever you'd call it).
I bought some games.

Ruiner <8.37>
Sabans Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Mega Battle <3.00>
Punch-out!! <6.29>
Thimbleweed Park <7.13>
Detective Pickachu <24>
Edited: Removed the superfluous exclamation mark in Punch-Out!!

Punch-out!!! <6.29>

I think Punch-Out!! only has two exclamation marks, if we're being arseholeish about things. Which I am.
You are right! My mistake. I'll update my spreadsheet.
<4.99> The Room: Old Sins for Android.
<10> Eve: Valkyrie: Warzone (PS4/PSVR)
I've got a bizarre urge to play Fifa. I bet there are loads of old copies of Fifa 17 for the 360 knocking around
<24.99> Red Dead Redemption Super Awesome XB1X Mega Enhanced 4K Extravaganza
I've bought some more things.

Pac-pix DS <4.06>
Sea of thieves Xbox One <24.99>
Metropolis: Lux obscura Switch <7.19>
Megadrive scart lead <12.99>
CD32 Keyboard interface <19.99>

More games

Skies of Fury DX Switch <14.59>
Rogue Aces Switch <7.99>
Streets of Red - Devil's Dare Deluxe Switch <5.03>

I bet you don't play them all.
How much are you willing to bet? An Xbox One X for example?

I think you're all underestimating how much I use my Switch. :nerd:

Finished it or worked out how to play your digital copy on both accounts?

Oh, I know how to do the digital copy thing. We’ve been using only that version for weeks. I had the disc version set aside for Grim next time I saw him.

£1

(super-cleek)
Dusted off my 3DS yesterday and had a nose in the shop. There are some special offers on Jewel Quest games, at 90% off, so I thought I'd splash out on Jewel Quest - The Sapphire Dragon at <1.07>.

Also spent <16.50> on a Spectrum+ keyboard membrane. I like the fact that you can still buy speccy parts.
Rad Rogers on the Xbox One <13.85>
Super Skidmarks <10.99>
Megadrive Everdrive <39.99>

Which format?
The Megadrive. It's a J cart which means it's got two extra controller ports on the cartridge. Not something my everdrive can replicate I'm afraid.
Sweet. Does the megadrive version have the hi-res mode?
From the cottage, I remember it didn't come with racing cows. Which rather invalidates it to my mind.
What? That's a stupid decision.
I might have to disagree with you there Dave.. As for the high res mode, I'm not sure. I'll have a go later and let you know.
